Topic: Worth buying a Wii U now?

OrangutanSamurai

Hi there,

So I have some money post Christmas and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to grab myself a preowned wii u 32gb model or even a new one. These are currently selling for £160 (used console only) or £230 with Mario kart (new)

I'm incredibly tempted by a switch and so will likely purchase one when they are released but have heard that they won't be backwards compatible due to using cartridges instead of discs. I have not owned a Nintendo console since my old n64 and so feel that there is a lot of content that I could go through?

I was wondering if you good people could shed some light/give your opinions on this?

Thanks

@OrangutanSamurai It depends. I you want to play the exclusive games (and Wii games, since it's backwards compatible with that system), then go for it. On the other hand, if you're planning on getting the Switch day one anyway, maybe save up for that system instead. On January 12 Nintendo will announce the launch games for the Switch and more. Digital GameCube games are rumoured to come to the Switch, and therefore digital Wii games on the Switch are also a possibility. We already know that some of the Wii U's big sellers are coming to the Switch too; Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and probably more. So in a way, you'll be able to experience the Wii U on the Switch as well, albeit in a limited way. If you have a disposable income, go for it, or save up for a couple of extra games on the Switch. I would definitely recommend waiting two weeks and see what Nintendo will reveal on January 12.

Just wait a couple of weeks until the Switch reveal and make your decision then.

Yeah unless you see a great deal there's really no other reason why you can't wait two more weeks. We'll almost certainly see the extent of the Wii U porting that will happen in that presentation, never mind any potential new games.

Go for the Wii U. Sure, Switch will get some greatest hits ports but it won't get everything. I think it'll feel like a great precursor to owning a Switch no matter how soon u plan on getting Switch

@OrangutanSamurai The Wii U has some GREAT games... which are all being ported to other consoles. I think it's a great idea, like other people have suggested, to wait for the Switch presentation and see which console is worth it.

Wii U has been pretty static in price the past few years. £160 used / £230 new isn't really a bargain.

With that in mind, I'd suggest waiting until the Switch event on the 12th to see if that interests you. As others have mentioned, it may get ports of the Wii U's biggest games (which in turn may decrease the value of the Wii U), and rumours have suggested it to be around ~£200. Plus you'll benefit from Nintendo's full development output for the next few years, whereas the Wii U is pretty much done with.

Worst case? You get your Wii U a few weeks later after deciding not to get the Switch.

The Wii U isn't getting any new games any time soon, and the Switch is on the horizon. As others have said, most of the must-have titles could end up on the Switch as well. In case you don't know, and leaving Breath of the Wild aside, those are:

  • Mario Kart 8
  • Smash 4
  • Splatoon
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X

That said, the Wii U does have a fair number of games that I can't see getting a port any time soon and that are worth a try. Excluding multiplatform titles, those would be:

  • Bayonetta 2
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
  • Pikmin 3
  • Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water
  • Star Fox Zero
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
  • The Wonderful 101

The problem here is that some of those are niche titles to begin and/or of debatable quality, so your mileage may vary a lot. It's worth noting that there's two Zelda titles on the system: Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. Those are also available on the GameCube, but they are best played on the Wii U. Same thing with Hyrule Warriors, Super Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World being available on the 3DS.

There is another major point you should consider: whether you're interested in playing GameCube and Wii games or not. If you are only interested in Wii games, then it's a no-brainer purchase. If you want to catch up on both legacy consoles, then you're better off buying an old Wii and waiting for the Switch.

Just remember, the Switch isn't backwards compatible, it will get some enhanced ports like others have said. Also, Wii U has Monster Hunter, and at this point I doubt the Switch will get one anytime soon.

Yeah, the only reason you might want a Wii U is for the same reason you'd want any older console. Exclusive games that aren't going to appear on the newer consoles. The problem is you don't know what those games will be yet. For example you might really want to play Bayonetta on the Wii U. What happens if the Switch gets Bayonetta 3? What if it gets something like a new DmC?

I know of someone who got a Gamecube for fairly cheap during the second half of 2005. We all knew that Nintendo would have a new console soon but he wanted to play some of those GC games. Smash Bros, RE4, the Zelda that was coming out soon and Metroid Prime. Within the next year we get more details about Nintendo's "Revolution". Guess what! It's getting that Zelda game, RE4 and Metroid Prime 3. It also has Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy. So he got a Wii.

Of course that person still got a fair amount out of that Gamecube. It was also a fantastic deal and there are games he got that didn't appear on the Wii. Some the Wii did get but they weren't quite as good. But I think if he had paid full retail and it was a few months rather than a full year? It would have been a different story.

If you don't have a Wii, I'd say definitely yes. So many brilliant games when you combine the Wii and Wii U libraries. Most of which are unlikely to be ported to the Switch.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

SharkAttackU

It is if you can find a good deal. Buying one brand new is a little much at this point.

There are bunch of great exclusives, full Wii Backwards compatibility, and Zelda BotW is still coming out for it. If you don't want to buy a Switch early and just want to play the new Zelda, a Wii U will give you a good year or two of great play without anything else. The games will likely get cheaper soon after the Switch releases, especially if there are enhanced Switch ports.

Wait a week until the update. I love the Wii U and think it is definitely worth getting even now. You will be able to get some games cheaper than on the Switch likely. And there will be plenty to keep you busy.

But the Switch might allow you to get at least the best parts of the Wii U. See what it's launch titles are and compare to what the Wii U has already, then make your decision. ..

Agree with @rockodoodle, watch the Switch presentation and Treehouse stream. Then use what you know from those to make an informed decision about whether to get a Wii U or not.

Tough question. I like the wii u and own over 30 wii games. So to me it made sense to buy some spare wii u. If you are interested in wii u games only I think the switch will have a fair share of ports or remakes

@OrangutanSamurai Now that the Switch dust has settled a little bit, have you made your decision? Personally, if I didn't already have a Wii U I would purchase one now rather than get the Switch at launch. The Wii U has a great library of games (including the Wii's library), free online, plus Zelda: Breath of the Wild (the only real reason to get a Switch at present). I'm sure the Switch will be great, but not for a year or so judging by what we've seen of it and its games. You'll probably have more fun with the Wii U in the meantime.

I agree with Monkey_Balls. If you like Nintendo-like games then the Wii U is a great pick.

The games are still readily available and at discounts ($20) and, if you like, you can just buy them off of the eShop where they are mostly discounted there, too. You can also do the My Nintendo deal to get free downloads or discounts off of their games.

To me it's the best system I've owned so far in terms of fun.

The Wii U is a good value because it also plays Wii games. There is quite a enormous library of games if you count those too. Even for first party Nintendo titles, there is a lot to go through.

You can play the Wii U titles on the Gamepad only which is like what the Switch does; but you still have to be in range of your Wii U to do so.

Game systems are all about games. See which platform has more games that you'd want to play. If you haven't played any Wii/Wii U games you could easily go a couple years before you run out of things to play.
