Topic: With the Wii U's failure, should Iwata resign?

I'd say it's a complicated question. On one hand, given the recently outed news on how NCL completely screwed over NST, as well as other observations like that of Nintendo's consistent failure to uphold basic online features and that of Nintendo's reluctance to working with western ideas and companies, it's hard argue that Nintendo hasn't become more out of touch under Iwata.

At the same time though, I see Iwata like of like Nintendo's Steve Jobs. He is very willing to say "no" to investor's requests if they only have short term benefit, but he will impress them with new ideas that no one ever really thought of. I am skeptical that Nintendo would be able to offer that sort of creativity if Iwata was booted out and the BoD brought in someone new.

Really, I think the best solution currently would be to give NoA and NoE greater decision making power. Open more studios in the West, and have a new manager to oversee game development. Open western hardware labs, and have people who work side-by-side with Genyo Takeda, holding him back whenever he wants to omit a basic online feature or completely hold back power.

I don't think he should resign. I DO think he should start managing the company much differently, though. If the NX fails due to his own mishandling again, then yes I would say he should be demoted

Iwata needs to go. However, merely removing Iwata won't save Nintendo. The company is full of super conservative Japanese business people who are out of touch with what the world wants for home console gaming. A gradual management shakeup is the best idea.

Huh. Didn't have to say anything. You already did it for me. Still, if the NX flops, then I think it's safe to say that Iwata should resign.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

Yes.

What's more, I think Nintendo's whole board should resign. It's clear the only way to fix the company is to get in some 'new blood' so to speak, so it's time to kick out the entire management team and replace them with people willing to make deep seated changes to the entire company.

Not only that, Wii U's failure costed Nintendo Billions of of dollars.

Of all the stupid things you posted in the OP, this probably is the most stupid. No one will know how much the Wii U makes/loses until the very last software and hardware unit has been sold (which also includes to 30% of any eShop title).

The Iwata-should-be-fired themes were common prior to the MK8 release and E3 2014. And now, those themes flourish again, because Nintendo made an E3 presentation that wasn't popular among certain people of the fanbase.

Iwata's job is to make money to the company. It's not Iwata's job to win a console war, since selling lots of hardware units isn't equal to a huge profit.

Isn't Iwata also responsible for the success of the Wii and DS?

Having insane success stories like that require taking risks. The Wii U was a risk that didn't work out, and at the very least it gives Nintendo opportunities to learn for their next system.

Success in the past isn't relevant to what's happening now. It's logical to think someone is going downhill and just doesn't have what it takes to make good decisions anymore, whether it be due to age or changing times, or a combination of both.

To think the other way around is not logical. Imagine bringing a 72 year old former boxing champion back in the ring and justifying it with "It's okay! He was undefeated back in the day, he can handle it!"

Yes, but even then he messed up. The Wii lost a ton of support by the end of its life cycle and was pretty much tossed under the bus to follow the rest of the industry. He basically did well for half a generation, if that.

He also managed a slight turnaround with the Gamecube, making him the only Nintendo CEO to ever have an upward spike in profits mid-generation. He has accomplished this twice, with the Gamecube and the Wii U. Guy knows how to turn a dime in the face of defeat, something conservative shareholders like very much.

I think the next few years are going to be among the most interesting in Nintendo's history as a video games company though. Nintendo has never been in this much of a bind before and the news coming out is quite intriguing.

Despite being left in the dust by its competition, it's pretty foolish to call the WiiU a failure when Nintendo still made a good profit from it. I can't say that I like how it turned out, but nonetheless, the WiiU did work out to an extent. Every company faces low points, and Iwata at least tried to acknowledge mistakes, but not without committing new ones. Still, he does his best, and as of yet, I don't see any point or benefit from kicking him off the throne.

This
Not sure if he should be let go of not but there's no failure. The 3DS is also an amazing success considering the mobile competition. That's really a stunning achievement when compared with the Vita or any other handheld (I.e., none. Because only Nintendo could do it).

@TeeJay: Wow. That is the most deceptively unreasonable thing I've heard all day. You're comparing putting a withering old man in the boxing ring DECADES after he was a success and comparing that to a guy who hasn't helmed a console that didn't turn a profit, pushes the company to innovate instead of reiterate, and has a long-standing good record. He's not out of his prime. Wii and DS's success stories ended not even five years ago, and the 3DS is doing well enough while the Wii U just kinda does the job without really achieving anything else significant.

What people seem to misunderstand is that one flum-up doesn't mean he's past his prime and on his way out. ALL IT MEANS is that whatever he and the team tried to do with the Wii U didn't work. You don't get anywhere in any industry without failing. Hell, the gaming industry has a phrase they often use to describe how to screw up: "Fail faster." They want to go ahead and let their failures be failures because that means they can learn and do something better. From what we've been hearing, assuming NX rumors are true, it WILL be replacing the Wii U and it has the attention of 3rd parties DESPITE NOT BEING COMPETITIVE IN TERMS OF SPECS. I think it's far too soon for anyone to be calling curtains on Iwata's role as CEO.

Yeah, same here. And I'm pretty sure back in 2013 I was already tired of "controvertial" discussions like this. :/
