Topic: With the Wii U's failure, should Iwata resign?

If I believed there was somewhere at Nintendo that could logically take the position and improve the company, I would say he should immediately. But I haven't, because I don't.

I genuinely believe at least 75% of Nintendo's problems come from being a slow Japanese company, so unless you know someone who could change that in a positive way, I fail to see the point in doing that. In all likelihood, he would also be replaced by some corporate person who corporate corporates his corporate instead of someone who actually worked on games, so **** that noise. I would take 10 Iwatas over any of the idiots at Konami or Sega that's for sure...

Had to check the date, thought this might be a thread from early 2013.

No.

@NightmareEater: Are you trolling or just ill-informed? I'm legitimately curious. You do know that Iwata has nothing to do with the Mario franchise, right? And will most likely resign due to old age, rather than because a bunch of butthurt fanboys complained about ONE console out of the FOUR he oversaw.

I was not aware that Nintendo ever licensed one of their IPs out to an inexperienced third party and then pressured them into meeting deadlines resulting in one of the most broken games ever, or anything remotely as bad as that.

@NightmareEater: >Implying that SEGA ever made good decisions.

Seriously, I did a paper in English on all the poor business decisions SEGA made. I was rather surprised to find that the Genesis was the only time they were ever even in competition. They got utterly crushed time and time again by other systems due to a combination of poor marketing, weak support, and some really, really, REALLY stupid decisions. How did the meeting on the Saturn launch go, I wonder?

"Sir, we're proposing a plan to push the release of the SEGA Saturn forward! We need your approval."
"This is an interesting proposal. What will be ready by that point?"
...
"What?"
"Only one game, sir. But we think the additional sales time will more than make up for it!"
"Well, that sounds reasonable. Notify the developers and get on distribution! Saturnday is on its way!"
"Should we tell the customers, sir? I think they might need some time to get ready."
"No, no. It'll be a surprise for E3!"

Trust me, Nintendo has made some dumb decisions. Almost every company has, but SEGA has made even dumber ones and do so far more consistently.

By your post, you're telling me that Sonic Boom is the most broken game ever. However, that title belongs to Big Rigs. Plus, Konami never made bad games.

Focusing on the wrong point. Sonic Boom, and for that matter, Sonic '06 are utter travesties on the face of gaming. They represent just about every element of lazy and bad game design imaginable. As for Konami, I haven't been paying enough attention to know why they found themselves in deep, but I'm sure someone has a lengthy explanation somewhere.

Indeed, Sonic Boom and Sonic 06 are bad. But at least their playable. There's much worse games. Here's a example : Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Custer's Revenge, Action 52, Zelda :The Wand of Gamelon, Shaq-Fu, Bubsy 3D, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and of course, Super Man 64. You can't tell me Sonic Boom and Sonic 06 are worse than them.

Reggie definitly wouldn't take over, Nintendo aren't about to let controll shift from Japan to America now are they.
The other thing to note was that although Nintendo hasn't sold many WiiU's, they've still managed to turn it into a profit making machine. From day one, all you needed to do was buy atleast one game with the console and it turned a profit, and then Nintendo were smart enough to limit the production line to cut costs which helped profits even more. Even in hard times, Nintendo's strategies paid off.
I don't think Iwata needs firing, it's more of an internal attitude adjustment that needs to be dealt with first before they change the board room.

Yes. Iwata should resign, then Reggie should give Nintendo to Sony for free.

Personal opinion aside (GO Iwata ^o^) it seems Nintendo Japan released few days ago the percentage of shareholders' approval to various Nintendo head figures and Iwata have the 83.45% of their support (and it's even raising from last year). That man won't leave anytime soon and to those wanting him to leave... PLEASE UNDERSTAND ^____^

No. Iwata is doing great, one general business management failure doesn't directly erase previous success or kill future potential. This isn't an american, one shot, fly high crash hard company.

@dizzy_boy: Very good points, sir! Definitely why Nintendo has managed to stay around for so long. Also reminds me of how they consolidated the Wii U models pretty quickly down to just one after launch. I think their analysts started to see warning signs almost right away, and they took the necessary steps to insure profit was still made.

Why should he? Nintendo is in the black, they have the top selling handheld and the wiiu is doing well on the home turf. It may not be what the rest of the world wants or what Sony and MS are pulling for their game system sells but business isn't always about king of the hill, often it is being steady and acquiring new resources for gains. Also why does every armchair analyst call for a CEO to resign? As and American I've seen plenty CEOs run companies into the ground and get golden parachutes....Nintendo, despite what people are saying is not at that point so why the pitch forks?

Despite being left in the dust by its competition, it's pretty foolish to call the WiiU a failure when Nintendo still made a good profit from it. I can't say that I like how it turned out, but nonetheless, the WiiU did work out to an extent. Every company faces low points, and Iwata at least tried to acknowledge mistakes, but not without committing new ones. Still, he does his best, and as of yet, I don't see any point or benefit from kicking him off the throne.
