Just beat the game today, thought it was amazing. Never played Wind Waker before, think it's actually turned out to be my favourite Zelda ever. Even more so than Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

I really felt they gave Ganondorf a lot of character development in this one as well. Made him seem more human, and almost a tragic villain to some extent.

I've gone mad on Zelda since playing this though, got Skyward Sword on the way, Link between Worlds Collectors Edition pre-ordered and even brought the Hyrule Hystoria to read. It's such a great series of games.

I really wonder why there was so much negativity to Wind Waker when it first came out, if it was to due with the visuals I can't imagine why. I love them.

I have to assume people were more interested in a more realistic style instead. Of course once we consistently got video games that actually tried to be realistic, many people realized "OH GOD WHAT HAVE WE DONE?!". I assume

As any other male-dominant medium, the mainstream gaming community is full of idiots who need everything to be dark and gritty and dull so they can feel better about themselves by looking "masculine" and "mature." Just look at how ridiculously popular games like CoD and GTA are among prepubescent boys. This was especially true ten years ago, when Nintendo games had built themselves a reputation of being "kiddie games" among these circles with the Nintendo 64, a stigma still present to this day in middle schools everywhere.

Thankfully the growing popularity of things like MLP among adult male circles is helping, so we might outgrow this stupid trend by the time these people have children.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that there's a social stigma attached to games in general, with people looking down upon gamers as manchildren. So these people think making all games look like something out of a Michael Bay movie will make them look better to non-gamers (LOL).

Pretty much. Also you can blame this:

People thought they were being promised Twilight Princess. What they got was Wind Waker.

Following Ocarina and Majora's Mask people wanted the more realistic style that was used in those games. I remember very clearly that being the major complaint about Wind Waker aside from the sailing. The need for a more realistic style is what prompted Twilight Princess to go as grim dark as it was. Personally I feel like Skyward Sword was the perfect blend between the two.

Haven't picked WW HD yet, but I probably will before the end of the month. I never played through the entire thing originally because I got sidetracked. Looking forward to dusting the Wii U off and exploring the seas in gorgeous HD.

Yeah I can understand I suppose why many who were expecting a darker grim Zelda and got Wind Waker would be disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I love games that have a dark feeling to them. But I don't think every game should be like that, but I suppose you can't please everyone. I remember a portion of people saying Majora's Mask was too dark for their liking, now all I hear is praise for the game and hopes for a 3DS port.

As for the sailing, I can imagine without the Swift Sail or the ability to use the Wind Waker to teleport to other locations, maybe traversing the map could become a bit tedious. Personally I enjoyed it, I love the world of Wind Waker.

Is Phantom Hourglass worth playing too?

Expectations for every new Zelda release are unrealistically high, so you'll always have people who don't like the game when it first comes out. Over time their expectations become more realistic and they see that the games are actually very good. It just takes some time usually.

Phantom Hourglass is...okay. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it. The entirely touch screen controls aren't really my style, but they work fairly well. The biggest issue is that you're stucking in essentially the same dungeon the entire game. It's easily my least favorite 2D Zelda by a wide margin, but that doesn't mean it's not worth playing. I believe the storyline kind of follows Wind Waker as well, so if you like that time period and characters it may have more value for you.

Exactly. The "Kiddie games" stigma is what drove many gamers away from Nintendo during the N64 and Gamecube era. I like how Nintendo pokes fun and references that trend in The Wind Waker see screen shot below. Most Nintendo fans had already jumped ship to Playstation by the time the Gamecube hit the scene. lol

^ Haha that's actually pretty funny.
I was wondering btw if anyone, who has played this game already, preferably more than once, could tell me a bit how they recieved this game. I love windwaker, dont get me wrong, but I don't tend to buy remakes. Since I know this game so well, I am afraid that I would get disapointed by it.

Any reaction appreciated!

@Tasuki So I'm curious did you ever buy this game and has your opinion changed on the art style? Did you enjoy the game this time around?

@Spoony_Tech: Nah I never got around to getting it, some bills popped up and I didn't have the money at the time it came out. Then my game budget went to the PS4 and now I have a bunch of games that I need to get to before I add another to the list. I still want to give this game another chance and honesty I dont think my opinion of the art style wont change. (Although I like the art style of A Link Between Worlds). I might get this game for Christmas cause my family knows that I am a huge Zelda fan but I will probably end up renting this one from GameFly at some points.

Its just a case of too many games right now not enough time to get to them lol.

Sorry for the late response btw since I didn't get this game I didn't keep an eye on this thread.

finally started playing this game.. loving it so far
but that's no surprise, really.... it's zelda =)

has anyone else been experience lag when throwing bombs though?

  • im just a few hours in, but... there have been a few moments (+every bomb-throwing moment) when lag appears, that's quite annoying

i'm the first person to tell you that all that matters is gameplay (+story in singleplayer games), etc.... and i really don't care about graphics....
i don't care if the Wii U has worse hardware than the competition, none of that matters to me

but i'm also the first person that complains when there's lag.... there is absolutely NOTHING worse than lag in video games
if it only happens every now and then in single player games... i guess i don't mind, but i hope there will be absolutely NO lag in Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8
i just can't stand lag in online multiplayer games (because i've always played RTS PC-games... and even the tiniest amount of lag can be the reason for losing)
so... im a little concerned

  • the Tingle Bottle feature (miiverse posts in a bottle) is absolutely pointless.........

Just finished Wind Waker last night. I never played the original when it came out on GC (while I had a Gamecube, I think I was at a point in my life where gaming took a backseat and it kind of makes me sad based on how much fans loved the system). I thought it was a fun game. To be perfectly honest I was a little hesitant at first. The story and art style had me a little nervous. But overall I enjoyed both of them.

I am the type of person who doesn't realize how much he enjoyed a game until a few month after the fact when I am minding my own business and out of nowhere the soundtrack starts playing in my head and a flood of emotions comes roaring back. I have no doubt that this will happen and I will hear Dragon Roost, Offset Island, Windfall, the Forest Haven, or the Great Sea music in my head and I will remember how much fun I had with it. Decent soundtrack overall.

If I had to pick one thing I didn't like it was the last battle where Zelda and I were supposed to work together. I swear that chick couldn't shoot a bow if her life (in this case mine) depended on it. But having slept on it, I am not as frustrated by it as I was.

Currently Playing: Dragon Age: Inquisition

ok... now that i've almost finished this game, i'd like to add a few things..

like i said.. i don't really care for hardware... these arguments are pointless
when it comes to single player games.. i just want great gameplay, a great story, etc.... i don't care about graphics

when it comes to multiplayer games... i care about gameplay, balance, competition, online-modes, online-features, the community, etc + the game needs to run absolutely smoothly
i can't stand lag in multiplayer games, it's the worst.
if there is lag in single player games (from time to time), i don't really care... it happens, but it doesn't affect my ability to play and enjoy the game

BUT... the lag i'm encountering in Wind Waker HD is pretty terrible.
At first i only had lag whenever i was throwing a bomb.. which is already annoying and unacceptable, but as you get further in the game.. the lag increases
whenever a pillar crumbles.. whenever you're out on the sea and enemies fire cannonballs at you, etc.

i trust nintendo completely (except when it comes to online multiplayer + online-features), their games run smoothly 99% of the time and i really don't have to worry about all the hardware-discussions, etc.
they develop the greatest games for their own home consoles/handhelds.. thus they run absolutely beautifully

but now i am REALLY concered....
and i'm not just talking about their online-services, online multiplayer games (Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8) + the balance in SSB

im talking about the likeliness of lag in those games.. + possibly low FPS
also... the new Pokemon games X/Y were advertised as 3DS games (even though only the battles are in 3D), but the FPS in 3D-mode is pretty terrible... and the lag in Wind Waker HD is also unbearable

im actually beginning to worry about their next single player games, Zelda for example..
they'll run into certain limitations with their current hardware, i'm already experiencing more lag in the current games than i have in all the older Nintendo games combined

i now HIGHLY doubt that the next Zelda will look anything like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_fyOkrteqM
if it did.. it would probably be unplayable due to 10fps and constant lag

Stop over thinking all of this. Sure Pokemon sucked but i've yet to hear anyone else complain about Wind Waker. This might have to do more with the fact it seemed rushed and it was a hd port then anything. I'm not worried in the slightest for the next Zelda and it will run most likely 60fps! Mario 3d World is a good example of how smooth a game can run from the ground up on the hardware.

I haven't noticed any lag at all too. Not even once.

Some people can get games broken from the store it's not the developers fault all the time. The Wind Waker is amazing, and
I haven't experienced any lag in it nor in Pokémon X, and Y.

the only time i experienced lag was when the game first came out and ppl were spamming tingle bottles all around WindFall and every time I sailed towards Windfall the FPS would dip due to my slow internet trying to load all the tingle bottles at the same speed that the game was running no i am not [email protected]@ting you, so I chose to not recieve tingle bottles and haven't had lag since~!
