You can market W101 here in the states & it won't make a bit of difference. Whoever picked the release date in US Sept 15 must have been out of their mind. No amount of marketing can make up for the US release date.

With so much coming out in August, it makes more sense.

Not like it really matters. It can still sell in the holiday season.

So why is the release date over seas Aug 23 and putting it the week of GTA5 is better? Really?

I was about to go for a long theory but I'll go the simple way: GTA V isn't on the Wii U, why the concern? You either get GTA V on your PS360 or TW101 on your Wii U, or both if you have both platforms and enough disposable income.

Maybe they figure most people looking to purchase GTAV, for the most part, won't be the same group of people looking to purchase Rayman and Wonderful101. I know we all go crazy about Rayman around here, but to be honest, it hasn't exactly been the biggest franchise Ubisoft has. Sales have never been amazing for the series, even though they all rock. And I, for one, have absolutely no interest in GTAV. Maybe back in my late teens or early 20s I would have been salivating over the game, but at this point in my life, those GTA games just seem "same old, same old," no matter how many new modes of transportation or different styles of curb stomping they put in it. I know that's just my opinion, but I'm sure a few others feel the same and will most likely gravitate to a fresh game like Wonderful101 instead.

I'm in the same boat GTA5 is not something I'm interested in. I will be picking up all of these awesome Wii U Exclusives this holiday season plus WatchDogs and a few others.

Nintendo needs to rethink their marketing they haven't needed it much in the past for the Wii because of word of mouth. They actually have a lot of work ahead of them - not sure if they are capable of getting the message out there.

@rallydefault Yeah same, GTA ended at San Andreas with me and I still think the best ones were 3 & Vice City... Watchdogs will take care of that drivey/shooty thing for me

Ok so we found the dozen or so people that aren't interested in GTA5. But it doesn't answer why the most logical way to maximize their W101 is to not have it the same week. Or do you all think W101 sales will be pretty much the same reguardless of other games. I think its not about just getting sales, it's about doing everything you can to maximize sales. And if you guys think putting it 2days before GTA5 maximizes sales, well I guess we'll find out

To answer your question, I don't even thinking Nintendo are asking it themselves. It wouldn't be in Nintendo's nature to plan their calendar according to competitors' console calendars, and GTA V is not releasing on any Nintendo platform. Do you seriously think Nintendo are gonna go "Oh, this is GTA V, the game is so awesome, if we sell our game in its timeframe, we won't sale it, even if they don't share the same platform"?

Different platforms, different audiences. If Rockstar Games had committed to the Wii U months ago, it would have been another discussion altogether.

GTA never interested me.

@uptownsoul
Our answer is: launching Wonderful101 with GTA V makes little to no difference as the target audiences are completely different. That's basically what we're saying. We're not putting together a roster of people who don't like GTA V, that just sort of happened. We're making the point that the audiences for these two games are almost totally separate from one another.

You outlined it succinctly! GTA has run its course for me. In fact, modern murder simulation has lost my interest completely. W101 looks fantastic and there are many new Wii U titles coming out (starting now) that are breathing new life into the system. I do think the sales will reflect that but the sound of gunfire on the competing systems are drowning out the attention Nintendo's console could otherwise be getting. I'm not sure how they compete in the Western market when they're so 'uncool' to like anymore. I wish I could show more people how wonderful Wii U is, how the gamepad is NOT a gimmick but an excellent addition to highly polished content and how the company continues to bring together friends and family and people of any age in the same living room. Time will tell how it all plays out. I think parents will prefer the appeal of Nintendo's brand on gaming over the holiday season, and with any luck, a price drop will make that decision a WHOLE lot easier for consumers. Either way, I'm personally thrilled about the Wii U's future. I just hope they can sell enough units to keep the content support going.

I don't think it matters when W101 is released. They could release it tommorow, next month or on Christmas. The hardcore nuts will be out in full force buying this game for their Wii U, while the other audience on Ps3/Xbox will be picking up GTA. For Nintendo, its about having this game out there, and on shelves to act as a system seller. You think anyone buying GTA doesn't already own a PS3 or Xbox? Nintendo is going to see who comes out for this, and for anyone that does pick up the console itself, they suddenly have a another game they may want to buy. A different strategy that may actually work, because there's a high profile monthly release the rest of the way.

Agreed- I think with Mario Kart and Smash Bros being on the horizon will also push sales too.

Possibly. It's not guaranteed, but I suspect at least Mario 3D World, Sonic Lost World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze might cause sales to at least increase by about five million or so units. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros 4 next year will probably cause the bulk of the console's sales though.

As for how it does compared to competition... probably well. After all, Sony and Microsoft's systems are going up against their predecessors with zero backwads compatibility, a more limited line up of games and a fairly high price. The question in my opinion isn't so much 'whether the Wii U takes off' as much as 'does any system take off?'

a more limited line up of games and a fairly high price.

First off if you have not got the money, you shouldn't really be buying any console. A console is a luxury for entertainment, $349 to $399 is not a massive difference at all. The Wii U line-up of games is good but, a fair few of them are not out until spring 2014. The PS4 line-up of games going up to spring 2014 like the Wii U, has a lot more games and a lot of games haven't even be announced yet, so far from limited. If anything the Wii U has a limited amount of games for the time its been out.

@banacheck

We talking just exclusives right?

Right now the PS4 only has two games announced for next year via Infamous and The Order.

Wii U has six games for next year so far two of which will probably be early 2014. (Bayo 2 and Mario Kart 8)

The best thing would be to buy a Wii U now and a PS4 next year and get the best of both worlds.

Plus, Nintendo hasn't even announced A TON of games according to them. We could get like 5 $10-15 level eShop games in that time frame. It would boost eShop just by adding little things like that, regularly.

@SCAR392 Yep, they want to announce those closer to release. Just looking at how they casually revealed Art Academy for Wii U it's obvious they have a plethora of games at that stage of development but not ready for the big reveal yet.

@Sony_70 Haven't you forgotten Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack and Drive Club? Aren't these launch titles? Because from the way you're highlighting it for the PS4 I'm actually getting concerned for the platform...

shingi_70

@DePapier

I was mostly talking about games for early next year and the ones you mentioned are 2013 releases.

well we've known about Art Academy since E3. Now were waiting on the full release.

So far on the horizon we have.

Bayonetta 2

Mario Kart 8

Yarn Yoshi
Untitled

Super Smash Bros for Wii U

X

Shin Megami Tensi X Fire Emblem

Pretty Decent line-up overall. I think for the second second Wave of Wii U games Nintendo should go all out with online functionality since third party games won't be that reliable.

I also hope that Yarn Yoshi is retooled as a 3D platforme, because the Wii U doesn't need any more 2D ones. .

Nintendo dropped the ball with most of 2013 as far the Wii U goes and everyone knows it by now. However i believe 2014 will be what 2013 has been for the 3DS, bucket loads of quality 1st party titles padded with a few outstanding 3rd party offerings.
