I think that it all depends on the person. I was lucky to find a Wii U at a great price, so I got one. Personally, I don't regret my purchase I've found a lot of Wii U games for a low price! Wii U games are being re-released for the Switch, but they're being sold at a higher price. I want to eventually get a Switch, but I think it's still way too much. I would rather get a PS4 for now (I know, I've got catching up to do, but I love playing old games).
Typically, they don't bring over every single game to the newest console. They may include all the Wii U games from their eshop to own digitally. Personally, I like having a physical copy, that's just my preference. I don't think they're going to re-release Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage Sessions on the Switch-I hope they do, cause those games are fun! I also like the Wii U because it will play Wii games; I like having a back up in case my old Wii breaks down.

There's still good reason to own a Wii U not just for Mario, Pikmin, and Xenoblade, but because of its backwards compatibility and massive Virtual Console library.

@SKTTR I wouldn't call Splatoon 2 disappointing....

Well, it's a bit disappointing for me. I mean, it does things right (and better) most of the time, but I like the first one a little bit more.

I think their will always be a reason to own a Wii U. One day we will even see a Wii U classic mini. The screen will be the same size as the dreamcast Vmu screen.

@Sargon I think that Wii U is better than Switch for these reasons:

Cheaper games, better and cheaper storage format (BD vs. SD), backwards compatibility, free online, apps, Virtual Console... You can use Wii Remotes, the SNES controller included with SNES Mini, the Wii U pro controller that is considered one of the best Nintendo controllers...

Wii U has tons of possibilities for a fair price. I can't really see Switch as a handheld with that poor batery life and big size and I can't see it as a proper home console either.

Maiden of Black Water.

"Will there be cases where people say the best version of Game X was on the Wii U?"

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker.

@Dezzy I didn't know that you could use the GamePad buttons on Wii Mode. How do you do that?

@BlueOcean

You did know because Nintendo already did it for some of the Wii games on the eshop. Xenoblade and Pandora's Tower used the gamepad on the official eshop releases on Wii U.

Modders have made use of that same approach for Gamecube games and any Wii game that was compatible with the classic controller. It's a different technique for gamecube games than it is for Wii games though and it takes a while to get it working.

You need to start by getting the homebrew running on both Wii U and on the virtual Wii.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I never got a Wii U, just felt it was a very odd release. It was part of the new generation of consoles but had last gen graphics. If they had released it a few years earlier even I think it would have done better. But deep down I wanted it. And now I'm paying for it...quite literally. They aren't cheap now, and I'm finally getting around to buying one before I get a Switch. Just seems wrong to skip a console. Plus, Super Mario 3D World looks to be one of the best Mario games of all time. You can play as Luigi and Peach! Also want to play Super Smash Bros. and Sonic Lost World. And I want to buy Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga so I can play it on the big screen for the first time.

It has some great games that are not available on Switch.
Super Mario 3D World
Nintendo Land
Yoshi's Woolly World
New Super Mario Bros. U
Super Mario Maker
Wii Party U
Game & Wario
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
etc.

@Dezzy I already had the physical editions of Xenoblade and Pandora's Tower . I have the Wii Mode soft-modded but not the "Wii U Mode". When I touch the GamePad screen or its buttons on Wii Mode it says that it can't be used on Wii Mode.

@SuperLuigi111 I'm glad you changed your mind. And yes, even though nobody wanted the Wii U (I did! And I have it!) its price isn't going any lower despite Switch's release.

One thing, though: Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is for 3DS.

More and more games have been ported to Switch, but I don't think they'll all be, and not always come with additions. Or when they do, they're not always meaningful. I, for one, have preferred DKC Tropical Freeze on Switch (I love new characters, but not if they can only be used in an easy mode), Captain Toad has exclusive stages on Wii U (and touch controls) and sold my Rayman Legends to buy it again on Switch, but kinda regret it, because beyond portability there isn't much else in terms of additions, so I could've kept the Wii U version.

Besides, even if it hadn't exclusives, and even though third-party games are just a few, it's a great system.

The argument of its graphics being "last gen"... I don't think so. It came out in 2012, when Xbox One and PS4 weren't in the market yet, and graphics wise it could compete with Xbox 360 and PS3. True, systems released years before, but it was at the same level. Nintendo systems don't always respond to generations logic. Look at the Nintendo 64, for instance. Coming in 1996, midway between 32 bit systems and 128 bit that started in 1998 with Dreamcast.

But anyway, Wii came out in 2006, when the technically way superior Xbox 360 and PS3 were already available, yet it was a tremendous success, in fact outselling the competition.

The Wii U is a jewel.

I'm not gonna say again what I already said but I'm deadly serious when I say that the Wii U is WAYYYY better than the Switch from my perspective.

In term of how it feels in hands, of exclusives, of possibilities, of Virtual Console, of backward compatibility etc...

The most underated system ever.

Duuude...
Wii U is Completely Different machine than Switch.
Both of them have their merit.
Wii U can play Wii U & Wii, Switch has Better games library than Wii U.
From your statement, i think you described worthy games are Must as beefy as Zelda BOTW / Super Mario Odyssey. Anything than lower than your expectation = Bad games, No buy, No play.

You know, i'm so lucky and happy with Switch games library. Much better than Wii U. And i don't play games what is popular / many male gamers play. I play games which is interesting in my eyes and fit with my expectation.

@Moroboshi876 I think that he means the original GBA version that is available on Wii U.

@BlueOcean That makes sense. Lol

By the way, I understand one of the "selling" (you know...) points of the Wii U here is backwards compatibility and Virtual Console. But I don't use them (I try to play games on the original systems when it's possible and reasonable) and STILL think Wii U is a console worth owning.

@Anti-Matter I don't think that Switch library is "much better than Wii U library" as you say, and also Breath of the Wild is a Wii U/Switch game so that one doesn't count as Switch exclusive. In fact it is a Wii U game that was delayed until the Switch port was ready for release, confirmed by Nintendo.

@BlueOcean
Well...
I have 7 Wii U games & 19 Switch games (More than 30 Switch games on my Shopping list).
I can say it's very Frustrating for me to find the 8th, 9th & 10th Wii U games as my Finale since Wii U games library has Less Diversity than Switch.
For Switch, during this year and after E3 2018, i suddenly added more and more Switch games to be bought in the future, doesn't matter they are Late ports / Remake ports / New games. The amount of good Switch games for me are keep growing.

You have the right to think the way you do, no problem with that.

It's just funny to hear people saying stuff like :

"Hyrule Warriors is really great
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is awesome
Lego City Undercover is a great game
Zelda Breath Of the Wild is the best Zelda ever
Captain Toad Treasure tracker is so good to play
Rayman Legends is fantastic
Bayonetta 2 is the best BTA ever made
MarioKart 8 is the ultimate MarioKart
Pokken Tournament is absolutely fun
etc...etc...
So you know I have an awesome librairy of Switch games. Switch is so much better blablabla..."

The reality is that those games are Wii U games BUT when they were on the Wii U, they were mehhh BECAUSE it was WII U ! Period !

@Moroboshi876 I think that the Virtual Console on 3DS is brilliant (GB, GBC, GBA) plus DS. NES (and SNES) games look great on 3DS too because the resolution is almost a perfect fit, so you can play GB, GBC, GBA, DS, NES (and SNES) games on (New) 3DS and they all look great. On Wii U the backwards compatibility and Virtual Console are awesome, but GBA and DS games are better played on 3DS in my opinion. Both 3DS and Wii U are great consoles and gaming museums at the same time.

Yeah, many awesome Wii U games for a console released in 2012 but now Wii U is the worst thing ever made but still the Wii U games are awesome but only on Switch but not on Wii U.

In a few years when Nintendo releases new hardware they'll say the same things about Switch. How rubbish it was, it was a failed attempt, was not a proper handheld/console, etc.

By the way, Nintendo merged the two divisions to have more first-party games but most Switch AAA games are Wii U ports one year and a half after the console was released. That is not what I expected, HONESTLY. Nothing wrong with ports but what else there is? Splatoon 2 (1.5) and Arms are not my idea of AAA Nintendo games. Super Mario Odyssey is the best exclusive game on Switch but there's little else and I still prefer older Mario games like 64 and Sunshine. Yes, Metroid Prime 4 and more are coming some day, but I'm talking about the present. Octopath Traveller looks great but it was just released this week and not by Nintendo.

So yes, even if Switch has a lot of Wii U, mobile and even Xbox One/PS4 ports that all together are +700, I don't really think that the list of relevant exclusive games is considerable.
