Topic: Will Splatoon 2 eventually come out for the Wii U

The Wii U wasn't a huge seller like PS3 or 360, so Nintendo had no reason to support it. Matter of fact, supporting it would hinder more than help Nintendo.

As someone who has been going through and checking out every single NES game, I am in the semi-unique position to say that your fond memories of NES sports games were mostly a lie. NES sports games are in fact, mostly bad.

I don't really think it is about trying to act grown up. The original NES had a ton of sports games that my friends and I played for hours upon hours when we wanted a change from Mario, Zelda, and Contra. Games like RBI Baseball, Tecmo Bowl, Double Dribble, and Blades of Steel were just as iconic as some of the other Nintendo staples. With every newer Nintendo system they've put less and less an emphasis on sports games. Sure Wii Sports is fun and a great party game however it isn't the same as sitting down to a game of Madden.

Also, abandoning a platform as soon as a new one comes out isn't the way to endear a new convert to Nintendo. I'm not sure but I believe that both Sony and Microsoft support their legacy systems with new games for at least a year or so before they stop. My wife and I wanted to get our son a new system for his 5th birthday in August. We knew that the Switch was coming out about 7 months later but we couldn't tell our 5 year old that he'd get his present in 7 months. So we got him the Wii U. I didn't think Nintendo would cut support this quickly. It isn't exactly the thing that screams to me "buy a new Nintendo system". It tells me that next time go with a Playstation or XBox.

Actually barely any of the console manufacturers support a system once its replacement is out. 3rd Party publishers may but not the 1st parties. In fact Nintendo is one of the few I know of with Pokemon Black / White that were DS games although the 3DS was available.

Its just since the Wii U sold so poorly, there was little incentive for any publisher to support it now that the Switch has been released.

Although I believe Axiom Verge is still due a physical release on it.

As much as I like Nintendo, that is definitely one of their biggest problems. It seems like they've always been the worst at supporting their home consoles. Sony is the best; God of War II came out for PS2 a year after PS3 came out, and not only did The Last of Us come out for PS3 three months before PS4, but Gran Turismo 6 came out for PS3 a couple months after PS4. Microsoft had Rise of the Tomb Raider release for Xbox 360 in 2015, two years after Xbox One came out (RotTB wasn't a system exclusive but it was timed). Nintendo generally cuts off support immediately for its home consoles. However, Nintendo almost always supports its handhelds after the new one comes out.

To be fair, now that I think about it @FX102A has a point. Reason why 360 and PS3 feel more supported is because of third-party support. And while Microsoft and Sony do release more games for old hardware than Nintendo, the games they do release aren't Halo or Uncharted or anything like that but more like MLB, something not too graphically intensive.

@shadow-wolf For Nintendo's home consoles, the support often ends a good year before the next system comes out. That was even true for the Wii. I think Pandora's Tower was the only Wii game in 2012 (it actually came out after the Wii U in NA).

@Octane

I was about to say that, but technically GameCube got Twilight Princess after the Wii came out, and Wii U got Breath of the Wild the same day Switch came out. Though granted those games also came out for Wii/Switch respectively so in terms of games exclusive to the predecessor, support ends a year before the successor comes out. It's a downside to owning a Nintendo home console, Xbox and especially Playstation handle the transition far far more smoothly.

Not since the NES has Nintendo continued to make new games for a system years after its successor came out. (and the SNES, which got more games in Japan due to the N64 selling poorly over there)

Sadly, Nintendo won't make more Wii U games since it was their least successful home console to date, behind only the Virtual Boy and Pokemon Mini.
Though I still bought one even after the writing was on the wall. Had bought most of the first-party line-up, hoping there's enough quality in that, and maybe a handful of third-party games, to make it feel like a satisfied purchase.

(Pokemon Black/White was brought up. That technically was released before 3DS, and Black/White 2 was only sort of a new game. That much effort they were willing to put into the DS. I think the only actually new game they made for the DS post-3DS was Pokemon Conquest, which still sort of fits into the "third party" category people mentioned since it was a collaboration with a third-party IP.)

Really not happy to hear this news... and I'm guessing, in time, Nintendo won't be happy either... as a parent to a teenage son, like most parents, I've only allowed my son one major console and he's always liked the wii and then the wiiU - if we can no longer buy new games for the later console it makes absolutely ZERO sense to upgrade to the Switch when the games he already has won't transfer... makes far better financial sense to buy a PlayStation or Xbox instead, keep the wiiU and expand the consoles... poorly thought out Nintendo

Such an idea is absolutely stupid.

@Clair45 Nintendo are under no obligation to allow you to transfer games. It would also be a technical nightmare since the Wii U lacks a gamepad, and runs on different architecture of CPU/GPU/SOC. The only exception will probably be the Virtual Console / select download titles.

Also, they made it clear in February that Breath of the Wild would be the last major first-party title for the Switch; so, really, this is your fault for setting such lofty expectations. Supporting the Wii U would hinder them by continually tarnishing their reputation, as the Wii U is widely considered a joke by most gamers, whilst the Switch has been, for the time being, taken much more seriously. You need to consider them as a business, not as a friend; what you want would make them little profit.

"Nintendo won't be happy either"

A port on the Wii U would not sell. Yes, as of now, the Wii U has a larger install base; but the demand for any first party titles is completely non-existent on the platform. Also, any one who wanted Splatoon 2 most likely has now purchased it. The time spent porting it over would most likely not be recouped. In fact, with your idea, they most certainly wouldn't be happy.

"like most parents"

I can assure you, at least in the UK, that "most parents" don't place such a restriction on their child. If he wants a Switch, and he has worked hard, then he should be allowed one. All you're going to do is disappoint him continually, as zero; I repeat, ZERO - first party titles from the Switch are ever going to appear on the Wii U.

Also, I agree with Samus7Killer, this thread is pointless and needs to be closed.

Sorry, Splatoon 2 will not be coming onto Wii U. The last first-party game to be released was Breath of the Wild, and after that they dropped first party support for the Wii U entirely. I would say either find another game your son likes, or try to find a Switch so that your son can play Splatoon 2.
