I guess I'm still hung up on this idea that because elements from particular games in a franchise don't appear in this particular game, it's not a "true" game or it's unworthy of the legacy of that series.
I like all of these games. They've all been excellent games full of hours and hours of fun content. Opinions on what features we think should or should not be included in each game is irrelevant. I for one am glad they switched up the formula for this installment, and I would have no problem going back to features found in previous titles so long as the game is good.
What I take issue with is diminishing a game because it wasn't the exact game that the TC wanted. No matter how much you try and create new criteria to judge what counts as a "true" 3D Mario game....it's a Mario Game, it's "canon" and it's in full 3D.
ok so nobody liked the hologram answer(even though it was the only real right one)
to me a real 3D Mario game is a mario game that isn't limited to sidescrolling(yeah even the RPGs and Kart)
a real 3D Mario platformer tome is a 3D Mario game that follows the most basic standards for 3D platformers, at least.
next 3D Mario game? Mario Kart 8
next 3D Mario platformer? don't see anything on the WiiU unless they remake some older 3D Mario platformer or make a sequel to 3D world or Galaxy 2

I say a true Mario game must be set in the Mushroom Kingdom to be acceptable, so that means Galaxy, Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Sunshine are all NOT true Super Mario Games!
Now, that means Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 3D Land are the ONLY TRUE 3D Super Mario games.
Too bad...my criteria trumps yours because I say so.
Mario needs to take five..................... years.
I'd be open to SMG3, but not for a while yet. They need to bench Mario for a bit.
Watch this, they'll come out with Mario Ultimate Frisbee at E3 this year, just to spite everyone.
Who knows. Usually we get one 3D Mario per system, so 3D World might be it.
I personally hope they give us another game in the same vein of Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy on the WiiU as well. I dislike that the 3D Land/World games are based around a timer. It doesn't fit in a 3D game IMO, I want to explore at my own pace and take my time with each level.

You forgot Super Mario World. As far as I know, that doesn't take place in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Ah, well the topic was 3D Mario games, and Super Mario World is is a 2D Mario game that takes place on Dino Island.
Of course you get that I don't really believe all that...lol...but I was trying to make a point about people using their own arbitrary criteria to exclude or diminish the value of an entry in a series.
If there is one Mario game that you could argue isn't a "true" this or that, it's Super Mario Bros. 2 US....because it's technically a Doki Doki Panic reskin and not built from the ground up as a Super Mario title.
i agree we need a new exploratory mario game. and i think personally we will get a hd remake of super mario sunshine, which i personally cant wait for as i have a lot of great memories of that game. but i think people are understating how good sm3dw actually was. i played endlessly with my gf on it. we beat every level, unlocked every secret and never got bored along the way. it is a modern day version of super mario world off the snes and it did a slap up job of being that. the gameplay was epic, smooth and precise. peopel seem to be already dropping it by the sidelines as a gap filler when in reality it was a well executed and extremely well produced game.
I think you may be being a bit nostalgic. I played Galaxy a week or two ago and honestly, it wasn't as grand as I remembered. Super Mario 3D World was a true 3D Mario game, however!
It's technically 3D. But it's closer to NSMBU than Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy due to how ungodly linear the levels are. That's likely what the OP misses, not the technical '3D-ness' of it.
This.
100% this.
I personally would take an adventure mario platformer (Mario 64, Mario Sunshine) over a linear get to the goal flag Mario game (NSMB, 3D World) any day.
I liked 3D World, but I didn't love it like I did Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine (extremely under-appreciated game by the way).
No matter what, they really need to bench the 2D-style Mario games for a bit (and I include 3D World in that criteria). The U as a platform is massively over-saturated with 2D-style platformers at the moment.
