Don't get me wrong I absolutely love sm3dw and enjoyed every minute of it.
However yesterday, I got the urge to fire up super Mario galaxy for the first time in about 3 years. I was absolutely blown away by it, sure it doesn't look as pretty as I remember it due to modern HD visuals but in terms of game play an freedom of movement it's on a whole other level..
I just find it sad that as technology seems to move on, the games don't seem as good. I know sm3dw was designed as something different but I just hope one day we'll get another true 3d Mario game, the likes of galaxy, or 64..... Even sunshine
Does anyone else feels the games aren't as good or am I just being too nostalgic?
I don't mind both Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. I like Super Mario 3D World because it is an classic Mario 2D world into 3D world. I'm an big fan of those. In my opinion, Super Mario 3D World is pretty much like the adventure Mario series without an level hub or lobby. You still have an goal to reach in every level which is an flag or stars. Only different is that the adventure series have open world level when the Super Mario 3D world have an linear level.
I still think Super Mario 3D World a good game and I think people get used to playing open world in my opinion.
I actually think Galaxy was the most streamlined/restricted of the so called "True 3D Mario games", SM3DW was pretty close to Galaxy just lacking a few things like the triple jump.
I think you may be being a bit nostalgic. I played Galaxy a week or two ago and honestly, it wasn't as grand as I remembered. Super Mario 3D World was a true 3D Mario game, however!
I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

It's technically 3D. But it's closer to NSMBU than Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy due to how ungodly linear the levels are. That's likely what the OP misses, not the technical '3D-ness' of it.
I believe nostalgia is hitting you too hard. It's true that 3D World isn't as nearly as grand as Galaxy, but I could argue that it's tighter in terms of control and gameplay in comparison to it. Super Mario 3D World IS a true 3D Mario game, but it's just a different type of 3D game. I think the word you're looking for is "explorative". "Will Nintendo ever make an explorative 3D Mario game for Wii U?"
The answer being yes absolutely because the Wii U is still young in its life and the producers, Miyamoto included have said on several occasions that the "3D" line of games is not a replacement for the 64/Sunshine/Galaxy formula. So yes, there will be an explorative 3D Mario game at some point. Just be patient and enjoy Galaxy until then
One thing I do want Nintendo to return to though is Galaxys cinematics. The opening scene in the first game made my jaw drop seeing it the first time around and the other cutscenes, especially the ending were so magical and emotional. Seeing all of the Lumas including your own sacrifice themselves to the black hole for your survival? Made me cry so hard the first time around. I seriously hope we get another game as emotional as Galaxy.
I do hope so, yes we do need an explorative Mario game as you put it lol

It sounds like you doubt that it'll happen again. Of course it will. They're not going to stop making them. Just because they deviate from the formula a little bit doesn't mean that they're going to abandon a whole subgenre.
Jeez, people on the internet sure love their conclusion-jumping. I swear...
Personally I think the Wii U could definitely use a Super Mario Sunshine sequel. Combine some elements from Galaxy in there, I don't know! Like the guy said above me though I think the right term is an "explorative" 3D mario game.
To me, 3D World is a more of a sequel to 3D Land, both 3D-adaptions of the 2D games (get to the flag at the end in x amount of time). 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 + 2 are the games I consider the ''true'' 3D Mario games (get 120 stars, no time limit, and more open worlds). Although Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 even more, took a more lineair approach to the series. The reason? Koizumi, the director/producer of the games, said the following: ''Our main standpoint with Super Mario is to ensure that players always know where to go.'' 64 and Sunshine were apparantly too complicated in the eyes of Nintendo.
I haven't been a big fan of 3D World to be honest, perhaps because I expected a so-callen ''true'' 3D Mario. I'd love to see some 64/Sunshine/Galaxy styled game again, free camera control, large HUB world, the 120 stars approach etc. Koizumi also left us with some information regarding the development of such game, he said the following: ''However, if a very large number of players expressed the desire for a more open Mario, we would take that request very seriously.'' That statement is a bit troublesome though, even though he clearly stated that those games are still around, and aren't send to the land of forgotten Nintendo games, he also says a expressed desire from players to be required for it to happen. More than often are those statements an unofficial good-bye to a game or series.
On the bright side, the Wii U is still in its early years, there's another Mario game bound to come. Since they've already released 3 ''2D'' games (Mario Bros. U, Luigi U, and 3D World), there's a chance the next one will be different, a ''3D'' game perhaps? Just like Sunshine and Galaxy were unique compared to their predecessors, I'd like to see some unique features for the next installment as well. No sequels, just another unique 3D Mario game.
I'm glad someone else is on the same page as me. Yes there is no doubt SM3DW is obviously a 3D mario game, but I am still wating for a solo (Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy) type of game.
I can answer this question: "Will nintendo ever make a true 3d Mario game for Wii u?"
YES
Because they already did, and it's called Super Mario 3D World, and it's really great.
Guess what? It's not Galaxy, it's not Sunshine, and it's not Mario 64, it's a NEW game that draws on ideas from across the franchise.
Now putting the silliness of the question aside: We'll probably see another 3D Mario release of some kind on the WIi U as long as they support the console for another 2-3 years. I'm sure people will find reasons to not consider that true 3D Mario game not a true 3D Mario game.
PS: My point, in case you missed it, is that Super Mario 3D World is already a true 3D Mario game.
