Topic: WiiU dual analog sticks or dual touch pads?

After playing some PS3 FPS it is clear for me that dual analog sticks are far away from competing with PC's mouse. What about right and left touch pads instead of the sticks? Would they offer enough fast and accurate response for aiming?
For me, any control schema that tries to compete with PC's mouse must cover:

  • To be able to move forward and backward as well as turning left/right pretty fast.
  • To be able to aim quickly and with maximum movement resolution. Might be you need to move the sight one pixel to the left in order to hit a distant target.
  • To provide a way to look around (move your head) independently of the aiming and movement direction.

All these could be, eventually, covered with a Nunchuck + WiiMote + a second analog stick in the Wiimote. Or, perhaps, with current WiiU tablet but with at least a touch pad area instead of one of the analog sticks.

Mandoble the Magnificent, surprised to see something non-negative from you. It is like a breath of fresh air. I like your idea (or Sony's idea) of touch pad area on the back of the Wii U tablet. More ways to interact with games the better I say. I am not a big FPS player nor am I a big PC gamer but I see how a touch pad could be great for precision and can be used in all types of games. Also, when how quickly I can acess different programs and features of my smartphone I think touch pads would be nice to quickly navigate through menus, inventory screens, etc. in games.

To blessed to be stressed.

HELL no

at the OP... no. Quite simply, have a go at some iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch games that use analogue or dual analogue on the touch screen. Horrible stuff, I have no idea why people think it's usable. Multitouch is good for some things but I really, really don't think it's better than an analogue stick for movement or aiming. The rear facing touchpad is a cool idea but... not in the place of dual analogue. At least IMO and I suspect I'm not alone.

Agreed. I tried playing an FPS with a mouse and keyboard and I wasn't a fan of it at all.

How long have you played games on iPad/ iPhone, exactly?

It's called practice. Give a controller to someone who hasn't used one before, or a mouse and keyboard to a console gamer, and they'll all claim they're "not as comfortable" as input devices they are used to.

It's very easy to blame the technology, but in my experience most people who claim it's the iPad's fault they can't play ______ game properly are just noobs.

It's more comfortable, but no.

I was talking about side/side square areas (touch pads) similar to these of the laptops, which offer really accurate mouse movement. I agree that touch pads of the iPad/iPhone are pretty bad for that kind of purpose, but probably it is because of the surfare's material (the screen), this doesnt happen with laptop's touchpads.

Well if you think that's true and also presumably as people here are saying the analogue stick is as good or better than KB/Mouse then....... why don't people use laptop touchpads for PC gaming more often? There is CLEARLY a reason why they don't even though the option is there and it's pretty damn obvious. It sucks, it sucks HARD.

I don't think you're understanding the difference between saying that touch controls are a sub-par replacement for physical controls and blaming the controls for me being a noob. It's there, it works and it works brilliantly for some things but it IS worse than physical controls when it tries to emulate physical controls. I can use them but.... if its a traditional game and I'm given the option I'd rather not.

This idea actually sounds a lot like the touchpad(s) of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, which is actually something I'd love to see done for not only the analogs (but with a bigger, more appropriate area/radius for each) but perhaps every button represented on any controller in the future, and with pressure sensing which buttons already have, of course. Maybe not so much the triggers and bumpers, though. But what should be done with those in FPS is to have that pressure control how much ammo is used if it's an automatic, something like that.

I agree with this entirely because my being a lefty, my mouse is what i used to use right handed, so I'd have to reach way over to the arrows for movement, which was completely awkward, aside from having to recall which key on my keyboard does what as opposed to a simpler, cut down controller scheme. So as far as analogs being "far away from competing with PC's mouse", the other advantage? When you're controlling an analog with your thumb you don't have to keep picking up the mouse and moving/re-centering back to where ever to keep looking wherever you're point of aim is directed as I did, so I don't think so. Although I do agree that these types of controls could very easily be covered with a Wii remote and nunchuck IF more FPS supported that 2nd control/gameplay scheme (sort of a FPS/rail hybrid) as MAG did with the PlayStation Move and Navigationn the PlayStation 3, which was kinda already introduced on the Wii with Link's CrossBow training, with the exception of 3rd person, but why a 2nd analog? Kinda unnecessary, isn't it? Lastly, as far as having a rear touchpad, on a tablet much larger than the PlayStation Vita or smartphone? Ehh, I think that'd be slightly awkward having to reach under the thing where needed and trying to hold it steady at the same time.

I like pointer controls (Wii and PS Move) more than both. It's more natural, and in some ways, more precise than using either analog or mouse. Just point and shoot.
