I think the systems name is a play on words like in the mario party 8 commercial where 2 guys at the door say "Wii would like to play". The word "Wii" really means "We". So for the WiiU it's like saying "We and you". Thats what i think.

Reggie already explained the play on words, though he meant it as a Wii for YOU.

So is that what the U stands for? Clever I guess.

I actually liked the rumor of them just calling it "Nintendo" simple and to the point was kinda hoping for that.

Well, just say "Wii 2" if you really hate the name that much (it almost sounds the same).. it's better then the name xbox 360 though... I would like that name better if the system was actually a circle... kind of like how the gamecube was actually a cube...

3DS Name: Ace FC: 0946-2234-2203
Pokemon White FC: 5114-3791-1792

Its called a 360 cause when you first see it you do a 360 and walk away from it. :P

Actually Wii U does sound better than XBOX360 haha.
Anyways, I was always wondering if Nintendo would go along the lines of 'We' 'they' 'Us' 'World'....But I never once thought 'U'

Nintendo Dream would of sounding so much better! :p

im hoping things will happen like did when the name nintendo revolution first appeared. that was a great name but well.. you know the rest of what happened. but maybe the 2012 release date could work in wii U's favor. maybe give a new name like perhaps maybe UVERSE or just call it stream again? plus i think nintendo would have the money to buy the name from AT&T :P

what does the U stand for? ultra?

All the children try to run,
To him its part of the fun.
His branching arms are for collecting,
His face is empty of expressing.
He sometimes hums a lowly drone,
He will wander 'round your home.
Dressed in darkest suit and tie,
He won't let you say goodbye.

I don't mind the name, but will it confuse people who are less in the know about gaming? I can see Nintendo releasing advertisements that feature the new controller with the Wii Remotes and the balance board. What's to stop these people from thinking WiiU is just an accessory for their old Wii? I continue to encounter people who think the 3DS is the fourth revision of the DS with a slider tacked on rather than an evolution of the previous system with new games. I believe a "fresh" name might have been better, but then people might be perplexed about compatibility with Wii hardware.

...wow, I wouldn't want to be the one making these system names. :P

I admit I was confused when the name was revealed (thought it was some sort of new peripheral, until I saw the controller), but I really can't see why everyone's up in arms. I had my money on Stream for most of the weeks leading up to the conference.

Now let me take you back in time:

Remember when Nintendo changed the fifth home console's name from the Revolution to Wii? Remember the uproar? Remember the jokes shortly after? Remember the conference that changed all expectations and caused massive lines just to see said console? There.
E3 2006 eliminated any reason to dislike the name. It was just too freaking fun not to care about a simple name.

But now.... I see that a re-using of home console brands (something that hasn't been done by Nintendo since NES/Super NES) is causing quite the same stir. Come on guys, take TBD's word for it. It'll grow on you guys and in two years' time (hopefully), it stick like a Metroid to Samus' cranium. Nerdy analogy aside, I think you should take Nintendo's word for it when they admit that they've alienated the fans in some way and are trying to reel them in with the new console and controller.

(And no, the name is pretty much set in stone. It's already trademarked. You can bet that you'll see CFE-001 on the new console when it reaches your homes very soon.)

What? No it didn't. Wii has always been a stupid name, regardless of the quality of the system.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Seriously, why are you judging a console by its NAME???
Mabye you should judge it based on something like its...features? Just an idea...

If the 3DS has not been discontinued SM3DL and MK7 are awesome games, but if the 3DS has been discontinued Sony has taken over the world. It is not true that both Sony has taken over the world and SM3DL and MK7 are not awesome games. Therefore:Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are awesome games.
