Some of you guys have to remember , alot of peeps on here are pups aka kids/teens. They get stuff for the holidays and may even have to trade in all their old games and be it their systems... Ima adult but still even as a kid i could never sell my babies for a new game or system. But just thought id throw that in there either way im not getting rid of my wii system and i have over 40 games downloaded through wii shop , so this is a great thing to be able to do , even though the guidelines are still abit hazy for now.

My guess is that anything in "Wii mode" - retail games, VC or WiiWare - will output at 480p. Maybe they'll release Wii U optimised versions of VC games in the Wii U eShop which run at 1080p or at least 720p, but I bet you'd have to buy those titles again.

They won't have HD versions of VC games and if they do they won't call them "Virtual Console" games. If they do that they'll sell them as "HD Classics" or something. The Wii U will have a VC and you'll be able to copy and re-download your Wii VC games on it. Why would these not be just the one VC?

The info Nintendo gave recently said that the VC games you transfer to the Wii U will play in the "Wii Mode". Unless the Nintendo rep didn't know what he was talking about, this seems like a strange move on Nintendo's part.

I hate that they won't upscale the Wii and VC games to 720p or 1080p with square pixels, because the 720x480 resolution of the Wii uses non-square pixels regardless of whether you choose 4:3 or 16:9, and my monitor can only display at its aspect ratio of 16:10 or the aspect ratio of the resolution which is 3:2, so my games are always distorted. I was hoping we'd at least be able to play VC games on the Gamepad screen, but if VC games are played in Wii mode, then apparently we can't do that either.

All I'm saying is that for WiiWare and Wii games a "Wii Mode" makes sense but with VC games it seems a bit strange. Are they going to have a Wii VC and Wii U VC suddenly? Are they going to run in "Wii Mode" until the Wii U gets that VC title? Will the Wii U have the full Wii VC library at launch or not?

It doesn't make much sense.

Maybe they just want to avoid the whole problem of scaling SD games to HD, so that's why they want to run them in Wii mode and prevent us from being able to play them on the Gamepad. I guess the advantage to leaving all VC as Wii VC is future VC releases could work for both the Wii and Wii U, but if they are planning to continue making consoles beyond the Wii U, it's going to be strange having all VC run in Wii mode unless all future consoles maintain backwards compatibility to include the Wii.

Except that the Gamepad is not HD, the Wii U supports SD resolutions and VC games in general have always run at the original resolution of the games. PAL tinkering and AA in some N64 titles excluded. Also it has been suggested (confirmed?) that not only will the Wii U have the VC but that GameCube games are being considered.

So I'd be very, very surprised if the Wii U doesn't have it's own VC with a large library of games as well as full support for Wii U controllers and likely the GamePad display. Given the high probability of that, the VC is virtually free money don't forget, it seems strange that they'd allow you to transfer VC titles but then not make them "Wii U VC" ready. It makes sense with WiiWare because that would potentially require extra effort.... but when they're doing it anyway? If they make Wii U VC and Wii VC two different things then I can't help but think they're taking the piss.

no. you're right about the other things, but VC games do not run at their original resolution. they all (with few exceptions) output at 480p over component, while most of the original systems were 240p or 480i. there's no anti-aliasing applied to n64 games, the reason they look better is because their internal resolution has been doubled by the emulator to take advantage of the wii's better graphics card. there's no real reason the same couldn't be done to take advantage of the wii u's 1080p ability.

@romulux
I'll take that... but they couldn't exactly run at 240p (and some PAL VC titles have to run at 480i). My literally incorrect statement was correct in the sense that VC titles have always been designed to run as close to the originals as possible. If the Wii U does have a full VC of it's own there almost surely won't be any discernible difference between Wii U and Wii VC titles in terms of visual quality.

There surely would be... try running a game in, say, a SNES emulator on your PC at 640x480 resolution. Now try running the same game in the same emulator in your PC's native resolution. The difference might be quite subtle, but it's definitely there.

Also, it's conceivable that Wii U optimised VC games could have filters applied to them to make them look more like the display of an old CRT TV (see, for example, Sega's Mega Drive/Genesis games which are available to buy from Steam). Filters like those really need to be run in the highest resolution possible, even if you're just emulating a pixelly NES.

@antonvaltaz
Now do the same test with all of your fancy filters turned off. The VC has always been about making the games look as close to the original as possible so there likely won't be the corner smoothing and CRT scanline faking. You'll download a new VC game on the Wii U and it'll almost surely look like it would have on the Wii.

One of the areas that Nintendo really frustrates me is the virtual console service. Why the heck do they feel that they can only release 1-3 games per week, especially since all of these games have been released on the Wii already, just unload them all at once please! I want some N64 games to start unloading!
And not to mention the Wii VC missed a lot and I mean a lot of games for some of the systems. NES obviously has the most, but a lot of great games were missed on the N64 and SNES.

Nintendo has said on multiple occasions that Wii U will have everything on the Wii's VC PLUS Gamecube games.

They never actually said that they would have GC games. They said that it is a possibility and that it would be an idea but they never said for sure.

Thread is a necro, the last post before the most recent two was from a couple of months before the Wii U launched. Everything said in this thread was from when there was no confirmation of the Wii U VC at all let alone how it would run.
