I was aware of the day 1 update for the Wii U, and most of the features requiring it all need online anyway, but apparently the system can't even play Wii games without this update. Personally, this doesn't affect me because I have internet, but I imagine that for some people this may be a bit inconvenient to say the least. Perhaps it couldn't have been avoided without delaying the release date, but it is disappointing for those that will have any issues playing older games because of this.

It does seem very peculiar... maybe it's to encourage people to connect to the web? And I imagine disc games will have the update on them... eventually.
Yeah, expect post-launch Wii Us to come with this update installed and for post-launch games to have the update on the disk. I doubt many early adopters won't connect it to the internet so I don't think it'll be much of a problem. There's what, something like 80% of occupied households connected to the internet? How many of the non-connected will be getting it at launch AND who want Wii functionality won't connect it? Not a lot I'd guess.
Kinda like the people complaining about the lack of non-HDMI connections in the box or even the fact that it's not focusing on 3D. It's all about the numbers. ~70% of households have HDTVs compared to ~17% when the Wii launched and only 3% of households have a 3D capable HDTV. Look it up. If you are not catered to by what Nintendo is doing here you're in the vast minority. Kinda like how graphics cards don't have VGA outputs anymore.
Annoying that we can't see how Wii games run before launch but.
Playing Wii games on my Wii U is exactly what I want to do on Day 1 Launch Release.
What else are you going to do though? It's not like there is anything "amazing" coming from Nintendo anyway. You might as well just duct tape two Wii's together like LordJumpMadsuggests.
I don't see why this is a bad thing. It's not like they completely said "Screw YOU. Backwards Compatibility!" (ahem...I'm looking at you PS3, 360, and newer Wiis) It's one update and you're good. Get over it.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
Could be bad for people who do not have internet or high speed internet (for the matter) but I'm guessing Nintendo is just wanting people to connect their systems to the internet to garner info from them and get people to check out their online stores and such.
I don't see this being a problem for most people, and I honestly doubt Nintendo is trying to use this to get people to connect online, there's enough features to do that as is. My guess is the firmware just wasn't ready to do this yet and they didn't want to to delay the system more so they started production before they feature was finished.

I figured the very same thing. Nintendo definitely started production with a minimal OS to run game software. Its a very smart move on their part, and stayed true to their day one offerings.
