Topic: Wii U - universal power supply?

Hi guys,

I was wondering has anyone here used a US (NTSC) Wii U in Europe (230 Volt instead of 120 Volt)? I read several posts online that the Wii U supposedly uses a universal power supply, like the PS3 slim. Anyone able to verify this ?

Thanks in advance.

The Wii U's brick is universal and I can attest this first hand. My brother brought his North American Wii U back to Malaysia (240volts) for summer holidays. The dude does not have much knowledge in electronics and he just plugs it right in with a travel adapter. I almost peed my pants when he told me our cousins were enjoying Zombi U, because I thought his console was fried. It's been a whole month now and his Wii U works just fine and the gamepad charges just fine too.

I don't understand why Nintendo would mark their chargers only 110v for NA when it is indeed multi-voltage. Only Reggie knows.

Thanks for taking the time to confirm this.

It is indeed strange, that they would not mark a universal power supply as such. I think partly at least they might not care either way, they just want to comply with regulations in each region, partly they probably would be liable if their components didn't hold up after all, partly they might not want to incourage importers in the first place .... kinda makes their region-lock pointless after all. But Sony did the same thing, my sister giftet me a PS3 Slim when she moved back from Canada after I checked too see that while internal the power supply was indeed universal. All that was needed was EU connector cable ... of those I had plenty ^^

Just wanted to confirm that it does indeed work. U.S. WiiU Deluxe WWHD bought last week, working perfectly fine in Germany (230V), console as well as gamepad charger.

Ain't you a smartypants?
You should know though, that to much of anything ain't good for you. Remember how your tummy hurt, the last time you just wouldn't stop eating that ice cream? Well ... it is similar for electric devices, not all devices are built to work with, or even withstand, the same, let's call it, electric pressure and electric current. In Europe our grid uses higher electric pressure than e.g. in America, therefore a electric device built to work within the U.S. power grid could get severly damaged when plugged into a power outlet e.g. in Germany. It is not self-evident that the power supply of said device will be able to handle and transform the electric input into the proper electric output .... as far as I know if you had done the same thing with a Wii back in the day, you would have been out of luck without a transformer or proper local power supply. So you see, this is valuable information as well as happy news for anyone looking to not be stuck with a E.U. (PAL/ Region 2) console, which no sane person would be. We'll talk about region-locking next lesson though, now run a long ... and enjoy your youth, because it won't last.

I can't say I've felt hard done by having only a UK Wii U. Nothing I've seen released in Japan or North America is tempting me to import, certainly.

@Sean_Aaron Well two qualifiers certainly apply here, 1) not yet and 2) ony on Wii U (the story is very different with the 3DS), also the U.S. prices are just cheaper (as long as you prefer digital games, which I do). I think the fact that we Europeans haven't missed out on anything yet (I'm not sure, has shovel knight been released in the E.U.?), has much to do with the unfortunate fact that there has been little to no 3rd party support for the Wii U. Look at the 3DS which enjoys strong support by companies like Atlus ... I don't think I have to tell anyone that Europe tends to get the short end of the stick when it comes to Atlus games.

In the end it was a measure to be rather safe than sorry (who knows when SMTxFE will be released in Europe, could be at the same time, could be a year later ...), and to safe a few bucks, on a "regular" 60er game, you basically get 25% off now matter what. That's not to shabby and I prefer English anyways.

@Hy8ogen ^^ I didn't doubt you. I just wanted to reassure anyone that might come along and read this thread sometime down the road ... Well .. actually I'm totally pissed at Nintendo, no Y-Inversion for WWHD =( I don't even know if I bother to play it then ... really poopsiedoodoocacapoopledooplesy.

@Ralek85 Why would you want Y-inversion? The only game that I played with Y-inversion is Ace Combat. Other games just feels weird with it on. That's just me tho.

@Hy8ogen Well I'd say it's like being left-handed. It's not about what I want, I press up when I wanna aim down, taking the nose of the jet down in Ace Combat, or the tip of the Rifle in any shooter, it doesn't really matter what I control. As long as I use a joystick for control (be it a big or small one^^), that is just the way it is, it always has been and always will be. Imagine everytime you want to change the view up/down, you'd have to stop and think what your fingers are doing .... I might be able to pull it off in zelda, since there is little real "aiming" involved but any more action oriented game would simply be unplayable for me. It sucks, it really does, but on the other hand it is not uncommon a "condition" and also sooooo very easy to fix for the developer that under normal circumstances it not even worth mentioning. Actually, the fact that it is such an easy fix and they thought to applay it to 1st person makes it always mockery in my book ... :-/
