I think it's a glitch, that there are a few slight variations of. My GP(GamePad) sometimes, when I use it to turn on my WU console, will not link up to the console, & I get an error on the GP telling me to move the GP closer to the console. Anyway, I find to correct the issue, until the next time it happens, is to power down my GP, & power on my WU by the power button on the console itself. It then connects to the/my GP, & everything works.

In my opinion, this seems to be a somewhat common occurrence in the GP's ability to initiate(start) a connection between itself, & the WU console, or the WU console's ability to (in turn) properly respond to such a request.

Tell me, do you leave your system unplugged when it's not being played? How many hours do you have your system setup to be idle(no person activity), before it automatically shuts down? Do you use the Quick-Start menu? Do you own, & use a Pro Controller to occasionally turn on the console?

Edit: Do you also have your system set to do things while switched off? You mentioned how the tv is not responsive. The more I hear about these weird similar issues, the more I think it's possible that neither the GP, or WU console are at fault, but any possible "memory" circuitry w/in the GP is (at fault). (The) Reason being the GP seems to, in simpler terms, suffer temporary memory loss, & be unable to boot up(turn on/power on/power up) the system/console. (Gets me wondering if brand new off the assembly line, &/or more likely the re-purposed 8g systems had faulty components, or got damaged in refitting for the 32g model) On the other hand, it could be (all between the WU console, & GP) an identification issue(s), handshake(s), series, or combination of both having faulty issues, causing this.

Sounds odd - could be a radio source is interfering with the Bluetooth signal? It's not impossible, I had a older-style wireless Kensington trackball which conflicted with my Bluetooth keyboard when I first got a Mac Mini, so I ended up having to ditch the trackball in favour of a Magic Mouse.

You could try phoning Nintendo, but they might tell you to send it into the shop.

Signal interference is definitely possible. Thanks for mentioning that, Sean_Aaron! I came across someone else here, who was having similar issues to what I, & Rement8 mentioned. Radio interference is definitely as plausible as defective chips inside the GP/WU.

My two questions would be:
1. Does the Wii U still work off-TV when this happens?
2. Does your TV have problems with other sources?

I would suggest make sure your Wii U is fully updated also.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
