That is a possibility, but it sounds like his receiver just needs to have specific settings in order to work.
My receiver does all this stuff automatically, but I can still improve the performance by selecting more specifuc settings.
You have to make sure PCM sound and HDMI connection are the priority, otherwise it will default to Dolby Pro Logic or Digital.

Nintendo was cheap and they have not paid for a license for DTS or Dolby like everyone else in the world.
PCM 5.1 is the best format besides 7.1/2 or 9.1/2 PCM. Dolby is if your other devices can't support more memory.
It's not even that difficult to setup. If you followed my instructions and it doesn't work, then your receiver is old.
If you bought a new receiver in the past 4 years, it's compatible. A 50 year old man is telling you that.
