Can you get to the A/V settings on the little display?

  • Go to AUDIO on the menu. Go to DEC. PRI. and change the setting to DEC. PCM.
  • Go to 5 CHANNEL on the menu, and change it to HDMI.
  • Press the A.F.D. button on the remote and change that to AUTO.
  • Go to the COMP. Settings and change the setting to COMP. OFF

The second 2 might not need to be changed, but the first 2 do.

Wii U uses a non-licensed form of audio, LPCM. Maybe your receiver does not recognize this.

That is a possibility, but it sounds like his receiver just needs to have specific settings in order to work.
My receiver does all this stuff automatically, but I can still improve the performance by selecting more specifuc settings.
You have to make sure PCM sound and HDMI connection are the priority, otherwise it will default to Dolby Pro Logic or Digital.

Press the AMP MENU button on your remote control and go through the options that way.

@Ryno
If you seach his model number on Google, the first link leads you to a PDF file of the entire instruction manual.

Nintendo was cheap and they have not paid for a license for DTS or Dolby like everyone else in the world.

PCM 5.1 is the best format besides 7.1/2 or 9.1/2 PCM. Dolby is if your other devices can't support more memory.
It's not even that difficult to setup. If you followed my instructions and it doesn't work, then your receiver is old.
If you bought a new receiver in the past 4 years, it's compatible. A 50 year old man is telling you that.
