Topic: Wii U so far

Since Nintendo has already started talking about the Nintendo NX, I started to think about my experiences with my Wii U. Were you all happy with your purchase of your Wii U, do you regret it? What have been some of your favorite games so far? What games are you looking forward to?

Honestly, I've been really let down by the Wii U on account of its poor library of games. Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, and Rayman Legends (if you can even count that one, since it's multi-platform) are all gems in my book, but there really isn't much more beyond that. Smash Bros., of course, is a big deal for many, but I wouldn't say I love the Wii U entry. Pikmin 3 was quite enjoyable, albeit pretty short. Other than that, it's mostly just family/party games (Nintendo Land, Wii Party, Mario Party 10, Game & Wario, etc.) which are fine on occasion but don't exactly have a lasting impact, save for maybe Nintendo Land, which I admit was pretty darn good. Super Mario Maker hasn't been as much fun for me as I was expecting, disappointingly, although I am really enjoying the recently-released Woolly World. Splatoon is fine, but I wouldn't say I love it. I feel like the Wii U has had too big of a focus on budget spin-off games, from Treasure Tracker to Rainbow Curse to Mario Vs. DK. I feel like this year has largely just been one big dry spell for games, with almost all of my purchases being eShop titles, DLC, or amiibo. And there's not much of anything to look forward to for me. Just Star Fox and Mario Tennis, neither of which I'm extatic about. I feel like there are no revolutionary games that breathe new life into existing franchises this generation, like we saw on the Wii with Super Mario Galaxy, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, and DKC Returns, to name a few. It's sad to see the Wii U's lifespan draw to a close with arguably so little to offer, but at the same time it's almost a welcome end.

Well, I've been rather satisfied. I mean, yeah, it wasn't perfect; there's the lack of third-party support (outside of indies), and the many game droughts. Also, the virtual console could definitely use some work, and it looks like we're going to miss out on F Zero and Animal Crossing (A REAL Animal Crossing). However, there was some good in it, like the Nintendo games, some of the third party games we DID get (i.e. Rayman Legends), the nindies, three new ips that I really enjoy (Wonderful 101, Splatoon, which I should really get back to playing, and Nintendo Land...shut up, I loved that game!), Miiverse got me into drawing, and, of course, we got Earthbound and Mother 1-I mean, Earthbound Beginnings, on the virtual console. So overall, while there were some slight hiccups (okay, maybe slight is sugar coating it a bit.), I'm glad I got it.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

the system got me back into gaming after a 20 year absence, so yeah, I like it a lot. the main issue is how 3rd party completely abandoned it. I'm not a huge gamer, but would have liked to have seen at least SOME major releases.

That said, I've got about 500 hours of gaming on mine- more if you count my step son, brother and other friends. So, yeah, I am pretty happy with the investment. I have a pretty lengthy backlog of games in spite of its relatively small library. I'm sure I'll get over a thousand hours on it total, not to mention time surfing, netflix, amazon instant video etc.

I like Wii U and don't regret buying into the system at all. However it's pretty clear that there are some limitations to the system and that it won't appeal to everyone equally.

My biggest complaint is that it's just not as well-rounded of a console as Wii was. If not for full backwards compatibility (which is awesome) I'd be disappointed by the number and diversity of games available.

Favorite games for me? Monster Hunter, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, and the not-so-great-solo but always excellent when friends are visiting Nintendoland. Honorable mentions for Deus Ex, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Bayonetta, and LEGO City Undercover.

No regrets here, though I'm not the one who spent money on the console itself. Sonic Lost World is the big hit for me, the rest are mostly HD improvements over previous great games (Mario Kart 8, DKC: Tropical Freeze), multiplatform (Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed), or Pikmin 3 (I'll get to it eventually). Out of the N64, GameCube, Wii, and this, this has been the Nintendo console I have that I have had the least fun with, but also the one I've played the least.

I haven't finished any of my Wii U games yet and tbh haven't started most of them. The Wii U will be with me for a long time, like all my Nintendo consoles and games starting with the SNES. I am in no rush to judge it now. Like All Nintendo consoles it's library will stand the test of time.

Well this is my answer as objectively as I can give it....
games owned/end credits seen/endless games

DS: 19/14/2
Wii: 31/15/7
3DS: 15/11/4
Wii U: 19/14/6

It's fair to say that I haven't got as many games for Nintendo's current platforms as I did for their generation before. Even so I've gotten about as much out of those games. And like it or not the two main reasons for that are off-TV play and downloaded games. It's just too easy to not beat a game when the disk isn't in the tray or it requires the use of the TV.

On a more subjective note? The staple "30 mins here or there" on the Wii U completely outclasses the ones I had on the Wii. Smash and Kart on both, the Wii U took those up a notch. But then it's Mario Strikers and Animal Crossing up against Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, hard to not argue that the Wii U has been more interesting. On the first party single player stuff the Wii still wins out. At this stage at least. But going beyond that, Bayonetta vs Zack & Wiki? Hard to compare but it's fair to say the Wii U puts up a fight.

So I don't know what my conclusion is. I'm in two minds, there's just so much more they could do with the hardware. I don't feel the same way about the 3DS, I'd be happy if they moved on from that. I didn't feel the same way about the Wii towards the end or the DS. But the Wii U? I'm happy with the library as it is and I'd still call it one of Nintendo's best if this was where it ended.... but I still want more.

Absolutely not. This is easily my favorite Nintendo console to date witj easily some of the best games I've ever played. Smash, Kart, 3D World, Nintendoland, Wind Waker HD, Rayman Legends, Game & Wario, Splatoon, Tropical Freeze, New Super Mario Bros U (and Luigi), Super Mario Maker, and Yoshi's Woolly World! And don't even remind me that I haven't finished Pikmin 3 or Wonderful 101, still need to get Bayonetta 1 + 2, Captain Toad, and Kirby's Rainbow Curse. Not to mention the DLC for Hyrule Warriors, which I have a feeling we'll be seeing a fair bit more of, next year. Oh, man, and we've still got Guitar Hero Live on the way, as well as Fatal Frame V, Star Fox Zero, Pokken Tournament, Xenoblade Chronicles X, a potentially better Mario Party experience than our last one glares briefly at MP10 and who could forget that Zelda U is still planned for the Wii U? This hasn't been Nintendo's best generation, and after multiple delays, this year in particulatlr stands out as ending on a particulatly sour note, but in retrospect, this console has already given me so much, and it doesn't appear that it's going to stop too soon, either.

I don't regret my purchase, but the reality is that Wii U has an underwhelming games library and a record-breaking short life span that have disappointed me and most Wii U owners.

Only eight titles (five not counting multiplatform games) that I consider gems, that is, technically impressive, with great artistic value and nice gameplay, in alphabetical order, excluding Zelda Wii U/NX which will be probably a dual launch:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8
Need For Speed Most Wanted (not exclusive)
Pikmin 3
(imminent) Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water
Rayman Legends (not exclusive)
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (not exclusive)
Yoshi's Woolly World

Surely, I can find many more in Nintendo's previous libraries.

OK, I haven't done this anywhere else, so this thread is as good a place as any to do it. I'm gonna list the games I own, the games I want to get someday, and the games I regret.

I am not a crazed fanboy. I game on PC, PS3 and N3DS too.

Wii U games I own:
SM3DW
SmashU
MK8
LoZ: Wind Waker HD
Bayonetta 1 & 2
Rayman Legends
W101
Assassins Creed 3
Assassins Creed 4
Mass Effect 3
Batman: Arkham City
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
ZombiU
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
New Super Mario Bros U and New Super Luigi U
Watch_Dogs
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
DKCTF
FIFA 13
Splatoon
Wii Fit U
Nintendo Land
Wii Party U
Wii Sports Club: Tennis, Golf, Boxing, Baseball
Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Shovel Knight
Child of Light
Guacamelee
Steamworld Dig
Bit-trip Presents Runner 2
Art of Balance
...plus a few other eshop games

Games I want:
Super Mario Maker
Art Academy Atelier
Hyrule Warriors
Pikmin 3
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Mario Party 10
Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water
Lego City Undercover
Yoshi's Woolly World
Affordable Space Adventures
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games - Sochi 2014 (and I want the Brazil 2016 version too)
Star Fox Zero
Runbow

Games I regret buying:
Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush (I wanted to like it, but it was tedious. Sold it on, recouping 75% of money spent)
The Swapper (couldn't sell - eshop)
Stealth Inc. 2 - A Game of Clones (couldn't sell - eshop)

There are so many games that just get glossed over, or worse - maliciously sabotaged without ever having been given a chance (cough - Watch_Dogs - cough), by the majority of people, and for what reason? I have no idea. Why do people pan Watch_Dogs without having played it - it's fantastic. I don't care who made it or how long they delayed the release compared to other platforms - it's a great game that I'm really glad I ignored all the negativity around it and gave it a chance. If you want an open-world game for your Wii U and haven't given this an open-minded chance then you've only got yourself to blame.

I own a number of multi-platform games, most that I could have bought more cheaply on other platforms. But I bought them on Wii U for one main reason: Off-tv play - the best thing about the Wii U. It's so much more comfortable, and more intimate, looking at the game pad than a fixed-position TV. Is it HD? No. Does it matter when it's within 1 foot of my face? No.

I also have a 3yr old and a 1yr old. Wii U is great for playing with the 3yr old, who has already played SM3DW, Art of Balance, Toki Tori, Splatoon (single-player), Wii Sports Club, and I can't wait til we can all four of us play the likes of Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, the Mario games, and all the other multi-players together.

The Wii U is in a league of it's own and I'm so glad I bought mine. It's the first (and still only) console I've bought new with all my own money (Gamecube was my first ever console, bought used; PS3 bought used; Wii bought jointly with gf).

Sure, it would be great if it had a bigger hard-drive so I didn't have to faff with an external one, and it's a pity that the games have dried up a bit, but I don't even mind that much - look how many great games I already have to play! Things like Zelda U isn't a problem for me other than I am a bit of a hype-addict, it seems, so I am sad the Zelda U hype died this year, but it will come when it's ready.

And no-one has even mentioned PROJECT GIANT ****ING ROBOT yet!

I am happy with my choice of going with WiiU rather than the other current gen consoles, but things could have gone much differently and better. I enjoy the GamePad and the possibility to play console games or watch cartoons in bed - but that's just a personal thing because I don't have any other device that does that.
Unfortunately, the whole Nintendo output, while good, has been conditioned by the poor WiiU sales, so they couldn't take many risks. I'm sure if WiiU sold three times the units, we would have had three times the games and Nintendo would have had more freedom to experiment. There have been many first party games I enjoyed enormously but so far nothing that went out of the ordinary or that exceeded expectations. So my overall experience with the console has been good, though linear.

I got a lot of fun out of indie games, and while I was skeptic in the early days of the console, I must admit that indies have been a strong part of my experience with the WiiU, and probably worth the price of admission alone. However I understand that things could have gone much better even in this department - poor sales meant that not every big indie game got ported (or got ported with a delay) and that developers can't afford to discount their games more than a certain percentage. When I check PSN and see 70% discounts with cross-buy on three systems and then the eShop and its 25% discounts with no cross buy - I mean, it's sad.

So I am moderately happy with the WiiU, but I am not happy with Nintendo, who was clearly unable to deal with failure and to adjust their profile accordingly. Instead of giving more for less money to make their console more appealing to foreign users and sell more, Nintendo decided to squeeze every penny out of loyal customers in order to keep financial damage to a minimum.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I am not happy with Nintendo itself though. Hopefully they can win me back with NX

I bought my Wii U roughly one year after it's launch when my 360 died and between it and my trusty 3DS I've had plenty to play ever since. It all comes down to a matter of taste, but pretty much all of the major Wii U games released have interested me and the eShop is a damned treasure chest as far as I'm concerned.

I have always been a big Nintendo fan but found myself spending a lot of time with my 360 last gen as the variety of games and third party support meant it had the superior output. I still enjoyed the Wii though and bought a WiiU just after launch. The line up has been stellar and I have been able to play most of the big titles and some great third party games. This was also the first generation I indulged in onlinestores and found the eeshop particularly the virtual console a great experience. I will likely buy a ps4 just to play a few exclusives and big third party games but nx will be a must. However the WiiU will live on in my home as my YouTube streamer, vc machine and hopefully we can see some cheap and cheerful HD remasters appear on the WiiU before it departs for good.
