Only a few days ago these where still selling for £299.99. That is a £75 drop in price ($120 for you Americans). The basic pack can also be bought brand new for £199 from Grainger Games.
Why is the price being slashed this much? I know the January sales have started but I can't get my head around why it has been slashed so much. Even Xbox 360's and PS3 consoles have only had like a £10 drop in price.
My advice if you want a Wii U now I would order one right now.
Because they priced it too high in the first place. 300 GBP is 484.68 USD. That's outrageous! Even at 225 GBP, that's still over $360. I'd never pay that much for a console.

Once again, exchange rate has nothing to do with this :3

It represents how much a person's dollar is worth. 300 GBP is a lot of money, certainly more than in Japan and America, and to those who value their money, they're not gonna buy something they deem to be overpriced. All I'm seeing is supply and demand at work.

Perhaps currency exchange becomes less relevant when the nation's own economy and their possibly higher wages are taken into consideration. Many countries pay higher prices on games and consoles than the U.S. What's important that it's expensive relative to that country, not when seen through an American eye :3
Maybe the people that paid 'extra' when it launched, made it cheaper for buyers now. You didn't waste your money if you bought it at 300. I've already paid WELL over $1000 USD for all the stuff I've bought just to update my entertainment setup, and Wii U.

Don't worry guys, it's not like they aren't going to use your money to make the system better. It's an investment kinda. I really like my Wii U best over any device I have right now(only have PC, 3DS, PS3), and there's tons of cool and useful stuff coming out exclusively to this console, so just hold your horses.

If they do a price drop EVERYWHERE from Nintendo, they should give us 10 free GCN games and 10 free DreamCasts

But NoE didn't set the price, the retailers did. Why should NoE compensate?
Because a considerable number of customers aren't happy that they got their system at an inflated price (assuming this isn't some sort of sales). This could reach the press and give the company a bad rep that didn't learn from their supposed mistakes with the 3DS release. Whether they were responsible for setting the MSRP or not, they might want to compensate somehow or at least issue an apology
I don't understand feeling cheated myself - you buy on launch day you risk missing out on a cheaper price and sexier bundles later. The trade off is being there at the start. No regrets for me, I'm enjoying the machine, even if I spend most of my time on it playing a two-year-old Wii game!
@Forest-Ranger: really? Did you conduct a poll of Wii U owners to arrive at that statement? Please indicate what percentage is a "considerable number."
Maybe they'll give you guys a free Wii remote and Nunchuck. That would be cool, but this isn't really ONLY Nintendo's fault. Retailers need to make money, and I think business' cooperate to determine the price so both of them get some profit. It's not their fault not as many people as they expected bought it. Just imagine if no one would have bought it at all. Aim high, get what can. Shoot accordingly.
