I'm gonna get the Wii U with SMW3D this month then get the new 3DS model next year.

And the Wiiu has a crapton of games that are out now and will come out this year.Like Bayonetta 2,Donkey Kong tropical freeze,Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3d World,The legend of zelda wind waker hd, and more.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations & Watch Dogs 2

Relative to 3DS, it's still pretty small. If you honestly think the Wii U has anywhere close to the number of good games the 3DS has, you are in denial.

It's not even purely the Wii U's fault. Being half as old as the 3DS means it's going to get fewer games.

Note the difference in the number of games in the green?

I own Wii U, 3DS and PC so.... here's a comparison....

My PC lets me pick games from a huge library of third party titles even ones from a decade or more ago. If I want to play a game from a few years back I don't wait for a port, I wait for a sale! It then manages to, with some exceptions, run them at 1080p 60fps with AA at high detail. However it doesn't have any Nintendo developed games which is a huge drawback. I mean as fun as games in the Batman series are they don't quite match the quality of something like Wind Waker. I reckon this argument could equally be applied to the PS4/XBOne.

The 3DS lets me play games while I'm not at home which is its key advantage. The problem with that though is that while the Wii U or PC can sometimes give me games that hit the 9s or 10s the 3DS will only ever really reach 8s or 9s. That said A Link Between Worlds was easily my favourite game of last year so there are exceptions. The other great thing about the 3DS is streetpass which is a fantastic distraction but I'm not sure if you'd call it a "system selling feature".

Lastly the Wii U. For starters the GamePad, while mocked by some, is still one of its biggest selling points. While on PC I can do things like Steam In Home Streaming or NVidia Shield it either requires a lot of tinkering to get something that kinda works or the right hardware and an extra investment. Wii U does off-TV play out of the box flawlessly with just a couple of taps. Then there's MiiVerse which, when done well, can be like Streetpass but with context and immediacy. Walk into a room in Shovel Knight with the Digger Diary on and you'll feel really connected to the community as you read comments specific to that room. That's before I even get to the quality of the games. Actually, I'll make it easier.... a short list of games on Metacritic for this year...

#1 PS4: The Last of Us Remastered (not sure if it should count but I'm including the Halo collection so)
#2 PC, 360, PS3: Dark Souls 2
#3 Wii U, 3DS, PC: Shovel Knight
#4 Wii U: Bayonetta 2
#5 PS4, Vita: Velocity 2X
#6 PC, PS3, PS4, XBOne, 360: Dragon Age: Inquisition
#7 PC, PS3 PS4, Vita, Wii U, 360, XBOne: Child of Light
#8 Wii U: Mario Kart 8
#9 XBOne: Halo Collection
#10 PC, PS3, PS4, 360, XBOne: Shadow of Mordor

Wii U and 3DS highlighted. If you have just a one of PS3, 360, PS4, XBOne, PC then you're missing out on five of those games. If you have a Wii U you're missing out on six of those games and with just a 3DS you'll just have to be happy with Smash at ~ #12. However the great thing about the Wii U is that it's missing out on the games every other platform has. If you have BOTH a Wii U and a PC, for example, there are only three games on that list you're not getting and you get a range of games from Mario Kart all the way through to Dark Souls. If you skip Wii U you're missing out on a lot of quality exclusives most of which are dominating that end of the gaming spectrum.

^The Wii U definitely has a lot of games a lot of people like (A lot of them aren't for me, but that's another story). But my point is that if you are going to buy one right now, the 3DS is the way to go simply by sheer volume of good games available.

In fact, I'm willing to bet the 3DS's number of decently received retail exclusives more than doubles what the Wii U has. Because of that, there is a lot more to play off the bat.

@skywake The 3DS has tons of games worth playing other than Smash, c'mon.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

We already know New 3DS is a thing, though, so buying a Wii U, as of right now, is literally the better choice, in terms of hardware.

I was specifically talking about games from this year. Because how many really high quality games came to which platform this year is a good measure of how many will come to that platform next year. Anyways, the 3DS does have a fair share of good games I wasn't saying otherwise. All I was saying is that you won't be missing out on as much if you skip the 3DS as you will be if you skip the Wii U.

All of this year and into next year all I really want from my 3DS is Smash, Majora's Mask and maybe Pokemon and Fantasy Life. Wii U over that same period has Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, DK: Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad, Splatoon.... and that's just 'till mid next year!

Personally I would go with the Wii U, obviously it differs for everyone but I personally feel like the only first party games on the 3DS which stand up to the quality on the Wii U would be Kid Icarus Uprising and link between worlds. I loved Luigi's mansion 2 as well actually.
But I feel like most of the main games on the 3DS have been outdone by sequels on the Wii U, like MK7 and 3D land

i'd go with the 3DS and wait for the Wii U to be really worth it. right now the DS is absolutely worth having but the Wii U is just attractive without being a must-have. Unless you're going to be playing multiplayer every day, then the DS is probably the better choice still.

lol i wouldn't call them the main games on 3DS at all

I'd say even with the extra time the 3DS has been out they're already about equal in terms of top tier games. The 3DS has OoT 3D, 3D Land and Fire Emblem? The Wii U has Wind Waker HD, 3D World and Bayonetta 2. Both have Smash Bros and Kart, 3DS has Luigi's Mansion and Wii U has Pikmin 3. Its nice that the 3DS has Pokemon and Animal Crossing but the Wii U is very close to getting Splatoon and Captain Toad.

The 3DS has had more great games than the Wii U for the entire life of the Wii U so far but of course it has, it launched almost two years earlier. The thing is though they're just about on par now and the gap is closing. So it comes down to what you like more than just "the 3DS has more games". Especially when the 3DS is slowing down while the Wii U is speeding up

No gaming machine is a must-have. But with games like Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Tropical Freeze, Wonderful 101, Zombie U, Bayonetta 1+2, Lego City:Undercover, Hyrule Warriors, Rayman Legends, Stealth Inc. 2, Stick it To the Man, New Super Mario Bros U, Luigi U, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Super Smash U, Scram Kitty, Need for Speed: Most Wanted U, Art of Balance, Teslagrad, Wind Waker HD,
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition, Deus Ex etc, together with the old Wii compatibility make the Wii U a machine that easily can give many many hours of gaming fun.

Fair point. Though I have a hunch that New 3DS won't be out until late next year.

I would be shocked if the New 3DS took that long to launch worldwide given it's already out in Japan and is launching in Australia in the next week or so. Pencil in sometime before June next year I reckon.

I think it will come out in March. Regardless, we know Wii U will still be trucking along after the current 3DS, so it's a better investment right now.

I doubt that. They already released it in Australia. If they can do that so soon a full western release should be possible before the second half of the year. Or at least before the summer holidays.
