You're asking if you can buy a Wii U without a GamePad and play Zelda on it?

You can, but you'll need a Pro controller. You might also need your Wii remote to navigate the Wii U system menus.

There are a lot of good Wii U titles, including 2 HD remastered Zelda games (Windwaker and Twilight Princess). You might want to look at the Wii U catalog before deciding you really don't want a Gamepad.

Ehm, are you sure? That would be news to me if you could buy a Wii U without a Gamepad.

@fb01: No, usually you can't buy the Wii U without the Gamepad (and honestly, I would really recommend using the Gamepad and playing other titles as well - after you've finished BotW, that is - because there are many great games for the Wii U).
Oh and BotW doesn't support Wiimotes. You have to play with the Gamepad or buy a Pro Controller.
So the cheapest way for you would be to buy a used Wii U (with the included Gamepad) and to buy the game from a keyshop (unless you find someone who will sell you the physical copy cheaply).

thanks for all the reply's- it seems that buying a wii u without the gamepad/controller with the screen is not a sensible option (without the screen gamepad they are on ebay for£40 but all in seem to cost 100) so all in im looking at £150 to play one game....am sure i could end up playing others eventually --anyway thanks for the help

The gamepad is necessary to navigate the system settings menu too, if I remember correctly.

I would skip the Wii U entirely and just buy a Switch. The Wii U is getting no more support from Nintendo, and many great games (including Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) are coming to the Switch this year. Buying the latest console will save you more money in the long-run.

The "Wireless Screen Controller" is called a Gamepad by the way, and its mandatory to use the Wii U, since you need it to access the configuration options.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I haven't played a zelda game before and decided to do the same thing. I bought a wii u console from ebay, a power adaptor and a pro controller. That'll all u need. Only issue I found out is that you can't navigate the wii u system settings, so no Internet settings option and no update software updates. Stupid of them to release a pro controller that can't navigate menu screen settings. Either way like me, u just want to play zelda, so you'll be fine.

I guess you can just skip the shrines that have motion based puzzles yeah.

One boss battle I had to switch to use Gyro aiming to beat because of the controller layout (it forces you to aim rune and activate it with the same hand so gyro aim was easier).

I agree. Just get a switch. A used wii u is not that much cheaper depending on where you go. But the wii u support will continue for 3+ more years. Maybe not more games depending on Nintendo but updates and warranty will still be supported.

Though I suppose it would be possible, the fact that you can't modify system settings on the TV would be a bit of a downside. The OS relies heavily on the GamePad (the tablet controller) being present, and in some cases it may be nearly impossible to use the console without it. It's retarded and frustrating, seeing as I primarily use the Pro Controller (when I want to use the Internet Browser, for example, I'm forced to switch over to the GamePad).

You could play BotW with the Wii remote/nunchuck (or Wii remote/classic or strangely just a single Wii remote although i'm not sure how that would work). I haven't tried them all but it says the game supports them on the box. It switches between the different controllers instantly as I've carried on playing with the Pro after my GamePad died.

The big problem with not having a GamePad is that you couldn't access the Wii U system settings, so you couldn't set up the internet which could be an issue for updates. Unless you know somebody with a GamePad that you could borrow to do the intial settings I wouldn't advise trying a no GamePad Wii U.

@CaPPa I've no idea why the box says it supports the Wiimote and it's various combinations because it doesn't,none of them. That's a really bad error on Nintendo's part.Only the Gamepad and Pro Controller are supported and to complete the game, the Gamepad is necessary as there are some shrines that require it.

The games official page and its Eshop page has what controllers are compatible.
