Immediate disclaimer: I have none.

...but I am constantly wrestling with the idea of getting certain games digitally for convenience - there's games I love (e.g. MK8, SmashU, Splatoon - all perfect for a quick 20 minute session) that I'm playing less because there's another disc in the machine. Eshop prices and my love for boxart is what stops me getting them in the first place.

So it gets me wondering how many of you out there have gone all-in and gotten both versions...

I bought Splatoon physically but then my WiiU started giving me disc errors last month on all discs. So I bought it digitally and sold my physical copy. I usually keep physical stuff forever but Splatoon on disc will lose all resale value when Nintendo ditches internet services for WiiU in a few years. It's a great game to have digitally.

My other Switch is a WiiU.

Prior to my Wii U the last physical copy games I'd buy would be on the Gamecube. I PC games inbetween the GC and Wii U so everything was digital on Steam.

Since then I've grown to enjoy collecting the physical games. I only have about 10 currently but I also purchase digital for specific games due to how I'd play them. For example Smash Brothers is a game I'll pick up and play for 15 minutes here and there. Same with Splatoon, so I didn't want to change out a disc every time I got an urge to play them. However Super Mario 3D World I could play hours on end so I prefer to own the physical game.

I'm not all in and spread my digital/physical out across my collection.

I try to buy as many of the sort of games that you go back to regularly digitally. So games like Smash Bros and Mario Kart I'll get digitally. For the same reason as above, you tend to want to play the game that's in your system. If you're going back to something like Animal Crossing every day you'll not finish some other game.

That said I didn't get Splatoon digitally because I got a chance to buy it before release on disk. I didn't get Super Mario Maker digitally because there was a pretty amazing deal on the Amiibo bundle. And that kinda sucks a bit because those are the two games I've been playing lately. Which means I haven't played Splatoon for the last week.......

I try to buy all my games digitally. Even some games that I have physically, I try to work out situations where I can buy the digital version and sell the physical version and at least break even.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I own Sonic Lost World digitally on Wii U and I really want the boxed version too. Not having a game on disc is what keeps me from playing them, I just forget they exist. I missed out on the opportunity to get the disc version dirt cheap, so I'm waiting for the chance to get it at that price again.

I'm old-school and buy games physically when possible. The only exceptions to this rule are eshop-only and VC games. The same rules apply to my 3DS.

As for the Wii U games I currently have (only listing retail):
Physical: Super Smash Bros. U, New Super Mario Bros. U, Game & Wario, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, LoZ: Wind Waker HD, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Batman: Arkham City.
Digital: Nintendo Land, Super Mario 3D World

It's probably painfully obvious why those two are digital, lol.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

Physically:

Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3 (which I had to pay 80$ as it's very rare, haven't played it yet.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Wind Waker
Super Mario 3D World
New Super Mario Bros U
Splatoon
Nintendo Land (never play this)

Digital:
Mario Party 10 (nobody plays it)
Super Mario Maker

aside from other virtual console games I've downloaded like Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Super Matroid, Super Mario Bros 3, etc.

Yeah I have the same problem where I'm too lazy to swap discs so I end up just not playing anything at all. It's a real problem lol. That said I plan on going all digital with the NX and the 3DS' eventual successor.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!

Only digital retail games I have- are Super Smash 3ds, NSMBU, Wind Waker, Link Between Worlds, NSMB2, Tomadachi Life

The reason that the only digital game that I have is Splatoon is because I constantly alternate between two consoles at 2 different houses: Having them digital is annoying for that.

Yes: Get it digitally
No: See #2

2. Is the game readily available as both a digital and physical release?
No: Get it the one that you can get
Yes: See #3

3. Is there a particularly good deal or bundle for the physical release?
Yes. Get the physical copy
No. See #4

5. Is it a gift for someone else?
Yes. Get the physical copy
No. See #6

6. Are you physically standing in the shops with it in your hands right now?

Seems like most people are talking about if they buy digital or not despite the main topic being about if you got a game both physical and digital.

Anyways, for me I haven't, but I've been tempted to get the digital versions of some games I play. I kind of regret getting NSMB2 from Club Nintendo over AC since I don't exactly play a whole lot of 2D platformers and Animal Crossing would be pretty useful as a digital game. And I've been thinking about getting MH3U digitally in some sales for the same reason. (Also why I got 4U digitally instead)
I suppose Wii games could count, but the only one I got that I (kind of) already own is Metroid Prime Trilogy since I played Corruption, but I haven't actually played the first 2.

That's not what the topic is about. There's more than one way to use the word "and".

There are more ways to use the word "and", but I don't see many ways to read @gcunit opening post to this topic XD And he was clearly talking of owning the same game both phisically and digitally ^_^;

Personally I was tempted too some times to buy a game I have phisically also digitally for the no-disc-swapping convenience or buy the phisical version of a game I own digitally cause the boxart beauty, but so far I always resisted the temptetion, the idea to pay twice a game when obviously I can pay the same price for get two different games is a logic I find hard to dismiss XP

Ya that's what I meant since he asks who has "gone all-in and gotten both versions". Plus I think there already is a thread about if you prefer digital or physical. (May be kind of old now though, haven't seen it for awhile)

@Bakaknight the main reason I haven't already gotten some games digitally is because I don't think it would really be worth it to buy a game I already own. Of course Nintendo doesn't have sales that often so I haven't been tempted by Animal Crossing much, but Capcom has had sales fairly often including MH so I have thought about getting it since the price has been roughly $15 on the eShop.
Although I know one of my friends does occasionally get a game digitally, especially if there is a sale.

oops, must've missed that when I was reading the OP. Although it's kinda weird thread if that's the case, why would anyone buy the same game twice for the same system? The only game I have both physical and digital copies on the same system would be Super Mario 3D Land. .... and only because I got the digital copy in a Club Nintendo promotion Nintendo of Australia was running

I'm thinking of getting Splatoon digital as well. I play that game so often, that it isn't practical to swap disks all the time.

Well all the points have to go to @yokokazuo for highlighting the misinterpretation that's been going on in this thread, with props to @BakaKnight for the backup etc.

Who has BOTH physical and digital of the same game?

I was sure there would be some examples of people who do that here, but perhaps not... I'm really tight with my money and even I'm tempted to do it.

But I agree, money spent on doubling up feels wrong when there's inevitably some other game I haven't got at all that I'd quite like.

Nintendo should do a flash sale (eg. £15) on MK8 and Smash U digitally because surely most people who are going to buy those games have got them already, but it would tempt people like me to double up.

The reason for me making the thread, @skywake, was to see how many others do double up and therefore help me decide whether I'd be insane to do it or could tenuously justify it

I don't think I would ever double dip with a game on Wii U. If you change a lot between games it's pretty handy to have them on your harddrive but the prices on the eshop are too high and rarely get reduced, let alone to a level that it can be considered a bargain.
