It seems a bit silly and also can we have some colour please? Maybe in the style of the SNES? I'm bored with all white now.

I think that would displease the iProduct crowd and the LCD college frat boys. Just a guess though.

Or anyone with a modern lounge room where brightly coloured toys would look out of place.
The wisest thing Nintendo could stick to doing is having a nice, clean, elegant design.

Peoples are too serious and too scared of colours. Nothing looks more awesome than a brightly coloured something in the middle of a grey and boring room. Go for like a white, grey, black and steel kitchen and then buy a bright red toaster and people will think you're super stylish. If there is a brightly coloured option it's going to be high on someone's list.

Personally I'm all for a black Wii U unless they have a retro themed version......... but I'd go for NES or Famicom over SNES....

I'm not sure who made you an interior designer, but minimalism is awesome.

I never said minimalism wasn't awesome and I'm pretty sure what I was implying was minimalism with a splash of colour. I'm fairly sure that the people seriously thinking about how the Wii U will "fit into their room" would be much happier if there were "brightly coloured toy" options than if there weren't.

Also I'm fairly sure that a Wii U controller coloured in this style

isn't going to look out of place in your minimalist room

This kind of thing is my dream living room.

Did the designer get bored and start playing tetris halfway through?

While that room design is beautiful, it looks too futuristic and a smidge too minimal for my liking, plus there's zero color in sight. I'd personally stick a giant fake tropical plant in there, throw in some colorful pop art abstract paintings and a giant plasma hdtv, just as a tiny lazy example.
I'm into a more surreal/fantasy and 80's-ish retro look, because I'm an artist i just love to create and the picture above while again great for what it is, to me is boring in my eyes.

Yeah, I'm with Wave, That room is sh*t boring.

To me, the lack of colour creates a cool, peaceful ambience. I have a very busy lifestyle, so I need the time at home to be a neutral zone that doesn't engage my senses unless I invite it to.

That said, my actual living room looks nothing like that

Anyway, for people that do want the minimalist room, that current Wii U design is just awesome. Completely unobtrusive and humble. It's gorgeous. As the Wii was, and as the PS3 and Xbox 360 are most definitely not.

Even so, the white Wii stood out compared to the dark entertainment systems that were around it. (At least in my set-up). I would rather have the option of having a Black/White Wii-U at launch, rather than the white, which overtime will inevitably become yellow.

Other abstract colours though, I just don't think the pink and blue we have seen in Wiimotes would work with the tablet.

@chocogoldfish

You didn't like the xbox 360 slim design?

And color only works in my Imo on handhelds. For stuff like consoles one should stick to three basic colors (black, white, and silver) maybe a different color of you have kids or doing something cool like retro flavored wood paneling.

Except that the Wii was not originally and this Wii U design is not either because most AV gear is in various shades of black. A black or even NES themed system and controller would stand out less than glossy white box. NES themed also wins for being totally awesome.

As for brightly coloured stuffs I think that can also work with minimalism.

Kinda says "you walk into here for toast and coffee" like a Wii U controller of primary colours would say "I'm walking in here to pick up the Wii U controller". It's a good marketing idea obviously but it also works well practically. Highlighting something makes everything else less obvious so it makes sense to highlight the things you want to be noticed with colour.

Also note that I said controller and not console. IMO the console should be invisible so make it black or grey and not white! ... although I think that might be the Computer Science disease in me wanting to make everything invisible to the user. I don't know, do normal people like to see their consoles? Well you shouldn't!

I liked the Xbox 360 design, though it's a bit large (and noisy) for my taste. Neither PS3 is something I'd want on my shelf - massive and hideous - the slim looks even cheaper and nastier than the original.

I don't have a big problem with this Wii-U look, but I'd like the vertical mount option just because I like the smaller footprint on the shelf and having my two Wiis side-by-side presently is nice.

Yes, please on the NES theme!

Man, the future is disappointing. In my humble opinion, everything is so bland, basic, cookie cutter, copycat leach-like life sucking boring. I wish the Wii U would get schnazzy and add some funkin' personality in the mix.

If I remember correctly, the Wii U console from last year's E3 was silver but who knows what they could have done in a year. Also you can go to ign's wii page to see the size difference between the old and new controller design.

See you and I have very different interior design taste.

My coffee jug needs to be something like this:

Untitled

Where it says "hey chill, make a coffee in your own time, I'm here." I hate my appliances yelling at me to use them.

Once again, I agree that there should be colour options: for both the Wii U and its controller. But personally, I want white and white. White to provide that nice minimalist two tone white-and-black contrast between TV (with its black bezel) and console, and white tablet so it looks good side-by-site with my iPad.

But I agree a Nes controller look would do great for a lot of people.

CanisWolfred

I was hoping for something less...bulky. The general shape is still the same, they just changed the analogue sticks and the +/- button placements. I'm hoping this isn't really the final design...

Well it's going to be white regardless

But as previously suggested, themed Wii U consoles based on past machines would be a great way of getting peoples attention.

I would prefer the right analogue stick to change position with the other buttons but it looks great nonetheless. And well, the start/select change is the bigger improvement, imo.

Hallelujah.

Well I disagree with your ideas on colour and I disagree with your claim that white won't draw attention next to black TVs and DVD players.... but this is artsy BS so everyone disagrees. That's kinda the point isn't it? I think we should probably agree to agree but continue to pretend we're disagreeing.

Still, options. Options are great. If there were all the flat colour options in the world for the Wii U I'd go with matte black.

The guy from TT games that posted that picture with the new controllers design was fired. So, we can all assume that this will be the new model .

Well he did dig his own grave by posting that non anonymously after signing the NDA.. He only has himself to blame and he deserves it. He should just be happy he got away that easy, NDA violation can lead to court.

But I'm glad that this might be the final version. It's looking good.
