Topic: Wii U Feel Screen?

For those who don't know what a Feel Screen is, its a touchscreen that can simulate textures. If there is a picture of sand on the screen, you can run your hand across the screen and it will actually simulate the tactile feeling of sand. Now this is a long shot, because I think to have this kind of cutting edge technology would drastically raise the cost of a Wii U, but Yoshinori Ono did say that some of the Wii U's unshown features were "unique possibilities that will be difficult to show". We learned this week a feature that we didn't know about, which was NFC, but that's pretty easy to show and its something thats not too unique anymore after Skylanders. As I recall when the Project Cafe rumors were flying around, there was a report that they may have this "Feel Screen" technology as seen here:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109722-Rumor-Ninten...
It fits in with Ono's description of "hard to show", and you can't show "feel" just like they couldn't show "3D".

And speaking of the 3DS, a miniaturized 3D screen that didn't require glasses was once thought to be a very expensive piece of groundbreaking technology that wouldn't produce reasonable prices for the system, but Nintendo found a way. Maybe Nintendo is doing the same thing here with a Feel Screen....

Sounds interesting.
Also sounds expensive.
I'd be surprised if that was included and I don't know if it's even really necessary besides getting people to say "wow, that's cool" the first few times they try it, but you never know I guess.

Weird enough, a swedish gaming site spoke about this before last years E3. The site stated that they've heard rumour of the Wii U controller and that the touch screen would have the qualities described in the first post. They also thought the console would be named Nintendo Feel. Actually, reading the post again, and I understand that the source was someone from within Nintendo. The post can be found here (swedish):

There's a quote in english though:

Nintendo wants to change the way we play – again. The success of Wii was essentially proof that the controller is every bit as important as graphical technology. When Nintendo unveils its next piece of hardware on June 7th, the presentation will be as much about the feel, as the look, of its new games. The revolutionary aspect will once again be found in the controller itself.

I think the source was wrong, though.

Edit: I just realized your link linked to the swedish site. Sorry about that

Corbs played it at the last E3. It's already been said that that was not the Wii U's final form.

That would be truly awesome!
You never know, they did say the design wasn't final

The one at e3 was most likely a prototype of the final product. It will probably undergo some changes, some not noticeable. I think at this point the changes will be design only

I doubt we'll see a screen that can simulate textures given Nintendo's normal desire to keep production costs down. While you never know, I just don't see it happening.

Idk how people still don't understand that the Wii U shown at last E3 was far from the final product. It WAS a prototype. There was not 1 functional game that was exhibited there, and its appearance at CES wasn't to show anything new, it was only to show the product to reporters who weren't at E3, Nintendo was pretty clear about this. The new Nintendo system that's going to be shown at E3 is going to be drastically different from what we saw this last year because:

1. Nintendo announced that the final form of their console had yet to be revealed
http://wiiu.nintendolife.com/news/2011/10/final_wii_u_form_to...

2. They're still randomly announcing features that were previously unknown http://wiiu.nintendolife.com/news/2012/01/wii_u_controller_ge...

3. Developers have hinted that there is a lot more to the new console, never before seen "unique possibilities that are hard to show"
http://wiiu.nintendolife.com/news/2012/01/ono_wii_u_more_capa...

4. Heck the console might not even be named the "Wii U" at this next E3 http://wiiu.nintendolife.com/news/2012/01/rumour_nintendo_con...

Why do people think that the build at last E3 or CES is the final build when there is glaring evidence on this site's own homepage that clearly shows that there are plenty more surprises in store for this new Nintendo console.

feel screen is still a gen 1 product and would be stupid for nintendo to take a leap on something that isn't a big game changer and hasn't had enough r and d.

that and for that tech to work the wii u controller would need its own processor.

The possibilities of this technology would be endless.

...So I'm crossing my fingers for a Dead or Alive game. Dimensions was what ... really ... showed me how awesome 3D could be ... and ... I wanna feel ... the punches! Yeah ... the punches. Definitely the punches.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

The tech looks too early and too expensive to be used in the video game industry. Maybe the generation after Wii U we'll see Nintendo do something with it. Honestly though, I think it's more likely that Apple will pick this up first for their iThings.

There should be some changes in the works. You never know.

They said the same thing about the Wii and 3DS when those were shown at their E3's... I'll believe it when I see it.

Because Nintendo said the same thing about the Wii and 3DS when they were first revealed, and the final products only received some minor cosmetic changes.

I'm not so sure about that....at E3 2005 Nintendo first revealed the Wii console and showed and described the console itself but with 0 information about the motion controls. Come E3 2006 they finally reveal the motion controls before they released the game that fall.

E3 2005: http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1167582p1.html

E3 2006: http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1167583p1.html

So in fact, it could be a repeat of the Wii's revealing and they're waiting to reveal some of the more enticing features until this next E3.

For the fact that Ono stepped up and hinted to us that the Wii U has come much further than what was revealed to the public under a year ago, I'd say we have a reason to believe this time. Either way, changes are changes, no matter how drastic or incospicuous.
