Topic: Wii U and Remote/Motion Plus

I haven't seen anything about this yet but I was wondering a little something about the Wii U. We all know the Wii U will support Wii Remotes. I still like the pointer and gesture functionality the Wii Remote introduced to console gaming and think there is still room for it to enchance or improve games in the future. Personally, I'm hoping that any Wii U-specific games that use the Wii Remote be required to use Motion Plus or the Wii Remote Plus.

A great majority of the complains concerning the original Wii can be attributed to the original Wii Remote not being technologically sophisticated enough to really be attractive to developers. The Wii Motion Plus was supposed to fix those issues and it was impressive in games that used it extensively, such as Red Steel 2 and looks to add a great deal to Skyward Sword.

The accuracy afforded by Motion Plus is a great improvement over the original allowing the Wii to remain competitive against the similar but more advanced Playstation Move. However, Motion Plus never really saw the support necessary to really change the Wii's software landscape. Few Nintendo games support it, fewer require it, to speak nothing of third party games. Reasons include Nintendo not including it with the Wii console itself for quite some time after launch, a severe lack of games that support it, developers not wanting to go through the extra expense of developing for a small fraction of their audience.

With the Wii U, Nintendo has an opportunity to start anew and require support from the start. Unfortunately, there is some problem with that. They've announced support for Wii remotes and surely quite a few consumers will be upset to find that their Wii remotes don't work with their new Wii U games without having to buy a new peripheral, or buy a very similar-looking Wii Remote Plus. In a way, it could very well inherit the fractured userbase that was one of the reasons it couldn't gain ground in the the first place. Still, Nintendo has sold Wiis exclusively with the Motion Plus and later the Wii Remote Plus for some time now, so maybe the install base is wide enough to make it a requirement for the new console.

What do you guys think?

Personally I would make Wii Motion Plus a standard for Wii U games. I have 4 of them, so I'm ready for Wii U and Nintendo's future anyway.

Though lots of games simpy don't need Wii Motion Plus (games where only Classic Controller, the pointer, steering, waggle, etc. are used). The best idea would be to leave all possibilities open. Just like the Wii, lots of Wii U games won't need Motion Plus. It wouldn't make sense if Nintendo makes the Wii U only compatible with the Wii Remote Plus but not with the original Wiimote.

Still, I strongly recommend that developers use Wii Motion Plus if it makes the controls of their game better.

And to all Wii gamers, just update to Wii Motion Plus if you find a game that you want. I got it for Wii Sports Resort and the new Zelda.

I think nintendo should bundle at least one Wii Remote Plus with the Wii U. It would make it a lot more appealing to Wii owners who don't have Motion Plus because then they wouldn't have to buy more Wii Remote Pluses just to play Wii U games that use Motion Plus. It also makes sense that then anyone-even if they have never owned any home console before-would be able to play any Wii U game on their shiny new console right out of the box without the need to buy extra accesories seperately.

If the 3DS has not been discontinued SM3DL and MK7 are awesome games, but if the 3DS has been discontinued Sony has taken over the world. It is not true that both Sony has taken over the world and SM3DL and MK7 are not awesome games. Therefore:Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are...

I think that's more to what I was trying to get at. If developers are going to use a Wii remote for a Wii U game, they should do so anticipating a Wii Remote Plus (or Motion Plus). I just don't think it'd make sense not to encourage it since the limitations of the standard Wii remote was one of the major criticisms of the Wii and it'd be silly for the Wii U to have to inherit that limitation.

I think developers will be concentrating on the new display controller. I don't think M+ is going to be a high priority. But I could be wrong.

Put your analyst on danger money, baby.

Oh, I don't doubt that the developers will be focusing first and foremost on the new controller, but at the same time I don't think we're done seeing games like Red Steel 2 or Skyward Sword that really leverage the Wii Remote with Motion plus and if Wii U development were to be handled with the Wii Remote Plus in mind, many games that weren't done with the Wii because the standard Wii remote wasn't accurate enough could now be attempted.

Besides, Suda 51 said he'd make the next No More Heroes game on Nintendo's next console and I don't think the series would be anywhere near as fun without the Wii Remote slashing. I'd also personally love to see more games in the vein of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Godfather: Blackhand Edition, and all the gesture-controlled weapons from Medal of Honor Heroes 2.

I really like the WiimotePlus/Nunchuk combo for certain games, others no. That's where the WiiU controller comes in. I think we will have a perfect combination for both developers and users. Allow the freedom for the control scheme they think will work best. FPS Wiimote/Nunchuck, fighters WiiU controller ect.

As far as I remember WM+ was used by Nintendo only in WSR, it will be used finally in the next Zelda, while its game director was reluctant to use it. I would say that Nintendo is not displaying a lot of conficende on this device at all.

Wii MotionPlus is bundled with ALL MotionPlus-compatible first party Nintendo Wii games:
Wii Sports Resort, FlingSmash, Wii Play Motion...

...AND MotionPlus is even bundled with ALL third party games that need it:
Ubisoft's Red Steel 2, EA's PGA Tour 10 and Grand Slam Tennis...

...And don't forget: A Wiimote Plus is bundled with every Wii since 2009 when the Wii + Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort bundle was launched.

And that is all there is to Nintendo's strategy: Sell it as a standard for every new Wii customer and bundle MotionPlus with every game that needs it. Couldn't be much more logical, really. Thanks to this release strategy I now have 4 MotionPlus enhancements/controllers for cheap and good games that accompanied each MotionPlus - for cheap, or even free.

The point is, it's not about confidence (Nintendo has a lot of confidence in it) It's about making games that benefit from WiiMotion Plus. Like I said some posts above, not every game/genre would be better with Motion Plus, many games simply don't need it.

Only commenting since I bought Wii Play Motion and Flingsmash Sunday - REQUIRING Plus would be up to the game developers if they felt the game would benefit. There is currently a very short list of Plus games. I think it's ridiculous that Nintendo is bundling Mario Kart with the Wiimote Plus as Kart doesn't even use Plus. They should also put Play Motion in the box as it's basically only a $10 game and it's actually very good for $10 (the first Play sucked). But yes, any game that could benefit should use Plus as most people will already have them or could pick up the add-on for almost nothing. But how many need it? Very few games use PS Move - FPS don't count as they don't use "move" only light gun which the original Wiimote did just fine (unless some use motion that I'm unaware of). So basically golf and tennis. Luigi's Mansion would be good, but probably better with the Upad if you could see the invisible ghosts on the Upad screen floating around your room.

I just hope developers will still use the Wii Remote +, especially for games like Metroid, Zelda and FPS'. I don't know about the rest of you guys but after using the Wii Remote for about 5-6 years now, I just can't stand using analog controls for aiming, it's not a 1:1 experience and it's a lot harder to aim when you can simply move your hand wherever you want, aim and fire.

The Wii U controller would be awesome for RPG's, Action, Adventure and so on, but I want to have that 1:1 and superior control method of the Wii Remote when playing games that require aiming otherwise I'm backing out, it's just not fun using analog sticks to aim, either you overshoot or undershoot.

This thread sums up what I was thinking after E3.

I only have 2 Motionplus attachments because there has not been many Motionplus games that interest me. (So far, its just Virtua Tennis 2009, and Skyward Sword.)

I'm hoping that the Wii U will have more Motionplus-enabled games, so I will have more reason to own Motionplus. Wii U is amazing, but it cannot replace motion controls.

I'm sure there will be plenty of Motionplus games. I'm guessing that some games will just use the new controller for streaming, instead of as a controller. It has a sensor bar, so Motionplus can calibrate fine.

I do wonder what controllers will be bundled with Wii U (besides the tablet). It increases the cost, but probably helps the potentially confused consumer to go ahead and include a Wiimote (plus) as well, otherwise some purchasers will wrongly believe that the only kind of Wii U controller is the tablet and won't understand the whole concept of asymmetrical multiplayer.

This is what is so confusing... I want to see more games use the pointer motion controls of the Remote Plus, but I want to see innovation with the Wii U controller. That seems fine and plausible, but if both are to happen, it makes the Wii U controller seem more or less like just a different controller for the Wii, although it only works on this new system. People won't understand why the new system can use the old controllers, and why the old one can't use the new controller. Nintendo has already put themselves in a difficult marketing position, and their E3 presentation didn't help.

I also feel like if the new controller is the main draw of the Wii U, then if I am using the Remote Plus mainly for a game, I will feel like I'm not using the Wii U to its full ability. The same thing may moreso apply to developers. I may be just over-thinking things, but I worry that Nintendo hasn't put enough in the Wii U to make it stand apart from the Wii.

To keep costs low, I hope the Wii U won't be bundled with a Wiimote Plus and Nunchuk controller. You can always buy them separately if you don't have one already. The Wii didn't launch with 2 controllers either. If you wanted multiplayer you had to buy a separate second Wiimote. Wii U is likely the same, only one controller - the tablet. The Wii U interface and home menu, and the first games (maybe even a bundled game) will use the tablet controller as a priority. Handy touchscreen for the win. Local multiplayer - as always - costs extra. Wii owners rejoice as they already have a Wiimote ready for Wii U multiplayer.

I hope they bundle a Wii mote plus with the Console, that way developers won't be afraid to make games using the device.
