Not sure yet.
I'll have to wait and see what creative ways they put it to use before making up my mind on that one.

I'm not too sure what applications there are in gaming, but I'll keep an open mind. Having said that, the technology behind these new phones and credit cards is pretty clever, and Nintendo always have a way of putting new technology to good use.

I go by Lin1876 everywhere in games, so keep an eye out for me!

I going to wander a little bit...try thinking like a game similar to dead space or even metroid, a high tec enviroment where you need to find a card with a ID and security grands in order to access restricted areas. So you do have your own card, but when you do find that card the in game system scans the card and command you to flip your card close to the control and in the screen would be a special animation for it when the system upload information to the card.

Later when you find a locked door, you flip again the card front to the control again with a special animation on it and you can unlock that door, o insert a special password, etc.

The problems could come if you loose your card... :0 but can help in order to avoid cheading with online tutorials.

NFC doesn't sound very exciting to me. I don't want to play with toys while reading, nor does loading info to a card sound ground-breaking. I doubt Nintendo will utilize this functionality very much.

That could be pretty cool if they decided to do something like that.

I think maybe they could have something like that, but like this. The game would be programmed to have locked doors that need authorization, but nothing would be programmed beyond the door. You show the card, and it temporarily downloads an area beyond the door onto the console. This would then be deleted from the console. The card would also be able to be used as a save file, and to store your progress in locked areas. This would be helpful for games that somehow manage to use up all 25 GB, yet the developer still wants more areas.

I'm not really interested in it, because I don't want to buy extra cards or whatever to play a game. However, there are probably lots of people who will (those Skylanders figures seem popular), so it sounds like a good way for Nintendo to innovate and make some more money.

The only time when I'll use this is when I would scan the eShop cards. It's slow to just scratch the card and register the number. I know it takes like ten seconds, but its quicker by just scanning the card instead of entering in the number. Besides, the quicker I get my games, the better.

Agreed about not wanting to play with/buy additional toys just to be able to do additional/special things in a game; This is what DLC is for. Cards I have no problem with as long as maybe they hold enough additional temporary gameplay data like how AR cards currently work. I could see that concept working. Heck, I could see a more worthy Yu-Gi-Oh successor to the online PC game; Rather than digital purchases just have the game able to read/recognize every/and current card ever made for use, and use the cam and scan options from there on.

I think it would be cool for selling accessories for the Wiimote. Say you're playing James Bond in multiplayer and you got the standard weapons that are unlockable for the game...BUT if you buy the Special Edition Golden Gun attachment for the Wiimote then you automatically unlock the golden gun within the game. I think this could be used for a number of accessories to help push their sales.

Way better idea for gaming than stupid AR

Whoa. The way you utilised NFC in your example actually made me develop a tad bit more interest. I'd love to see a Yu-Gi-Oh! game use NFC on the Wii U in future, if it did happen. A Pokémon-themed game would work rather well this way too, IMO. Buy the cards, load 'em up, expand your virtual deck/fighting team, boom. Bustin' 'em up online and good to go.

TBH, AR is actually a very nice gimmick, but it just hasn't broken the barrier yet. If it was developed way further in future, even more than the current usage the 3DS and Vita portray, I'm sure we'd all find enjoyable gaming moments using augmented reality.

I guess other ways NFC could be used are for DLC/ULC and more interestingly, digital reading media. Go to your nearest store, purchase an NFC card, load it up on to your Wii U, and maybe you have the latest digital comic collection at your reading disposal. Of course, this'd be a lot more efficient if Nintendo got exclusive digital reading material on it for this. My first choice would obviously to buy the physical book, if it was just another classic title loaded on to it. Regardless, I'd love to see manga/anime series on this aspect of digital reading.

Maybe I'm just optimistic, but I can see a whole variety of ways NFC can be successfully utilised on the Wii U. I hope Nintendo sees this too.

I really like the sound of this. I would collect those cards. And then I would have the whole world to play Magic the Gathering with.

I'm confused how a nf. Card game is better than say the magic or yugioh games on xbla and pan.

@shingi: a. Nobody ever even mentioned it in comparison to those. b. It's more motivational with the cards to collect, and innovative. You'll be constantly competing with everyone worldwide to upgrade your deck with the cards you buy.

Because being able to play online + IRL >>>>>>> just online.

Also, Magic the Gathering on PSN/ XBLA is an "arcade experience." It's not real Magic. There's no collecting cards, there's no real deck building. The only real magic the Gathering game is the PC Magic the Gathering Online.

Potential for board games on Wii U tablet is amazing, and people make games like SkyChess from the Skylanders, I think a Skylanders chess board or something would be able to work with the NFC... special abilities, magic items, etc.

I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh at the National level up until a couple of years ago until I went cold turky & stopped dead... used to play a little Magic: The Gathering too until out local gaming store went under. But this idea of playing with physical cards improving the game is just completely WRONG - one of the things that put me off Yu-Gi-Oh in the end was the constant need to have at least three £70+ cards in my deck to win... and it was less about how good you were at the game or your deck building but who could afford to build the deck they read online first. I had much more fun with my tier 2 vehicroids than my Twilight deck.

How could pricing out 90% of the TCG market (and ALL casual players) from buying a game be good business? I still buy the odd YGO game for my DS as not to forget how to play... certainly wouldn't touch a game that requires hundreds of pounds worth of investment every year.

There are lots of other really good uses for NFC yet to be developed, Japan in particular could adapt it to use with their Ganbaride (Kamen Rider) series... you play a hero that can use three of 5 elemental powers (divided up between head, arms & legs), and you switch using medals with NFC chips inside them. Please watch this vid for an idea of how it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2eAlW1iBPY&feature=related

Basically, physical items could be used to make interaction fun and easier... rather than pausing a game so that you can go through a 5 minute menu to select one of 21 medals, you just pick the right one off the table. I think this is the best use of NFC to start with, to make gaming more interactive & allow more complexity by taking pressure off of long-winded menu systems. You want Zelda to have his iron boots on? Just plonk them on the WiiU, saves spending 5 minutes fiddling with the d-pad!
