Hey ladies and gents.

So I am stuck with a crappy CRT. My dad doesn't like the idea of replacing something that still works fine.
I've held off on buying a Wii U because I don't know if it will work on my ancient TV.

So, my question to you, people of Nintendo Life, will a Wii U work with a CRT TV? I know that I'll probably have to buy some kind of cord, but that's fine.

Alternatively, anyone know of a way to break a CRT without leaving any obvious hints that someone has physically broken it? :D

It will but you need to buy a separate A/V cable for it to work. You need to connect it in one of the ports (circled below) on the back of the Wii U. It's not gonna give you an HD resolution.

I've got my Wii U plugged in a CRT which is about 16 years old now.
I can confirm it works on it. I use my old cables from the Wii to connect it to the TV.

Ooh, someone's having a bad day.
I'm only 15, and don't really have enough spare money to buy my own HDTV AND a Wii U. Thanks for your time.

Ah, okay. Will the original Wii's AV cable work? It looks like the same port.

Well, everyone hates fanboys, can't blame you for that.
I recently purchased a laptop for about $1200, which has drained most of my savings.

Yes they will. And if I make a suggestion get the Wii U now and than save up for a cheap HDTV. You can usually find a good one for about 300 dollars or less even, Than you can have your nice new HDTV and your Dad can have is relic,

CRT's are awesome. Perfect choice for retro gaming, and not even Plasma technology can match CRT's perfect motion handeling. The Black levels are usually pitch black, they're bright and the colors are extremely rich, saturated and vibrant. The other benift of SDTV CRT's is the 'zero' input lag. I've switched back to my 27" CRT SDTV(via component cables) for 'Wii' games and they look and play amazing, much more so than any of the HDTV's I've had. The Wii U on the other hand, well....you're missing out on the Widescreen, 720HD, progressivescan and HDMI plus the option of having a bigger screen. So you might want to look into that! convince your pappa to geta good plasma. :p

The original Wii uses a proprietary composite A/V cable which fits (also compatible) on the Wii U A/V port. It supports up to 480i (interlaced) standard resolution using an analog signal.

Ya. Consoles before GCN, PS2, and Xbox pretty much only look good on CRT. Even Dreamcast could do 480p if you had the right cords.
HDTVs are for devices that can do 480p and above.
Just blame the broken TV on your pet by placing something sturdy in front of it, than make sure your pet is in the room and hit it hard enough it the said object to make a crack.

Or get a strong magnet and mess up the TV color and tell your parents.
