Topic: Wii U 5-6 years from now: No more online gaming?

If you knew all Wii U online gaming would cease to exist 5-6 years from now, would that influence your future purchases? If I had've known online services would be discontinued so soon, I doubt I would have bought several of the Wii games I own today. (Call of Duty, Grand Slam Tennis, Wiiware poker, Bomberman Blast, and Dr. Mario Rx come to mind...just to name a few) I would probably still buy Mario Kart 8 for the solid single player, but I doubt I would buy Smash Bros. Actually, I will most likely forego buying Smash Bros. because of this "pulling the plug on online Wii" situation.

The Wii U is a different situation, though. Wii wasn't really designed to be an online heavy platform. With digital purchases and online being more of an aspect for Wii U, they won't pull the plug nearly as quick.

It will probably play out with how Microsoft plans on keeping Xbox 360 online for a longer time. Wii didn't even have accounts, but Wii U and 3DS have NNIDs, so things have built up to the point where they won't be able to shut off online as easily.

I never buy a game at full retail price if it is eventually going to be unplayable. That's why I'll never play Titanfall on the Xbox One, when the support is gone from that game it's going to be a useless disc. The PC version may be different, I mean there are still people playing Counter Strike, but I never buy an online only game or digital only game unless it's under $20 dollars. It's why I don't buy Call of Duty anymore, I used to really like the solo campaigns for those games but they got to be so bad I just stopped paying for them. Smash Bros. is a much different story, there will still be local multiplayer and whatever single player mode there is within the game.

To be fair, buying a full price game for its online is a terrible idea imo.

Also, it's already been pointed out that Wii and DS have been screwed over because the people who bought Gamespy are horrible.

Nintendo has given us online service for 7+ years on the Wii and DS for free. We're lucky they didn't pull the plug when the Wii U was launched. Furthermore, I think it is more of a financial strategy since the Wii U is backwards compatible. Not to mention you can transfer everything from the Wii to Wii U.

The same goes for 3DS and DS. However I would be surprised if people will actually upgrade from DS to 3DS because of Mario Kart DS.....Since 3DS already has 7.

TL;DR

Nintendo is simply making people upgrading to the Wii U/3DS.

PS: You're not gonna buy smash bros because the online feature will eventually be cut off? Jeez

Xbox 360 and PS3 servers aren't going to stay online forever, especially since Xbox One and PS4 aren't backwards compatible. Where do we get the time frame of 5 or 6 years? Wii Launched in 2006 and online multiplayer shut down 2014. The store is still active.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Consoles are more vulnerable to online server shutdown sadly and yes you are right it puts a dent on your willing to purchase.
However it is not wrong to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt partly.

1. For instance DS and Wii were not online heavy.
2. Those were used by Nintendo Wifi Connection which is archaic compared today. Nintendo Network is much better.
3. Contract ran out with Gamespy who ran Nintendo Wifi servers. Glumobile the new owners of Gamespy don't have a good reputation.
4. Nintendo seems to push forward Nintendo Network as their future. If you read their investors report.
5. In their report Iwata talked about using account based system without being tied to console anymore.
6. They are pushing for a unified OS platform to link their multiple tier hardware.
Therefore its not wrong to believe Nintendo will push their online services for a longer time.

However, its also not wrong to believe for Nintendo to pull the plug but its not wrong to give the benefit of the doubt either. So goes both ways.
Sony already plans to shut off Gran Turismo 5 servers anyway to push more on to Gran Turismo 6 which didn't do very well.

Unfortunately I am not sure if Nintendo runs the Nintendo Network or they leased it to a Third Party. I hope it isn't so we can't get a Glumobile repeat incident.

I dont agree with it but that's the reason. And I dont make gaming purchases based on what I think a company might do in 5-6 years.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

Right now there is only maybe one Wii or DS game which I care about the online for. Mario Kart Wii. Everything else it's a non-issue either because online wasn't a big deal for me or because I have well and truly moved on. Even on the Wii U and 3DS there hasn't been that much where I've actually cared about online and still do.

Even with Mario Kart Wii which is the only one I do care about still I did get more than my money's worth out of it. Last time I checked the hours it was the second most played game on my Wii. Second only to Animal Crossing which is now a depressing weed forest. So no, 5-6 years is a LONG time to hold onto a game. Especially when most of Nintendo's products are primarily local-multi and singleplayer focused anyways. Even more when the online modes are deserted after a few months.

I don't think it's worth worrying about wether your games can play online in 5-6 years. I can see why because if you really enjoy the online mode it would suck when it ends, but shouldn't you just be enjoying the online mode while it's available? With games that do have a good online mode you'll probably get a lot of time out of them before servers are shut down. The Wii and DS online services are still available for a couple more months anyway, which is pretty good considering how old they are. As for games which have a crummy single-player but good online, though, well that's worse but still, just enjoy online while you can.

It's a given that online doesn't last forever. Even PS3 and Xbox 360 servers will shut down eventually. The problem is you don't "own" the online aspect so you are subject to the provider's terms including dates of availability

The Wii U's online service doesn't have the large install base like Xbox Live and PSN. Unless Nintendo acts quickly, the system will get critically panned more and more over time.

So the company that hasn't been pushing online as hard doesn't have as many people playing online. Thank you, I never would've guessed.

Also Battlefield 4, Sim City...y'know if I need to make a rebuttle to this being the be-all end-all good idea, at least get a PC if you're so obsessed with that. (X's seemingly beautiful online co-op being my rebuttle to that next point...and how easily amused people will be forever as long as their Mario Kart and Smash Bros are fun online is my rebuttle to your point after that. Good day sir).Or I could point out that Nintendo is the main guys not forcing online into their games, actively telling the Dark Moon team to convince them before putting online into a freaking Luigi's Mansion game (which would be pathetic if done any other way tbh) while actively pushing their "let's have family members interact IRL again" local multiplayer asymmetrical console.

So unfortunately they didn't put online in the games that weren't going to make the console a smash hit regardless. Now continue to not play ACIV on Wii U with its online because it doesn't have the DLC you would never buy (or need to, the game's too long as is), I'm going back to play that new Wonderful IP you asked for and never bought because its a new IP.

Playing Smash Bros (and any game like it) with friends on the couch is always preferable to online play. Dont kid yourself.

Apart from Miiverse, eshop and the browser, I've only ever played online 4 matches of Injustice, 2 unresolved due to my opponent rage quitting.

I'm not fussed to be honest.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Why don't they keep their top 3 most utilized online games functional, but disable the rest? Wouldn't that be a compromise?

Since I don't often play my games online, so I'm not entirely concerned about the inevitable online service shutdown. By the time this happens, I'd already have enjoyed whatever every game I purchased had to offer. Even better, Nintendo Network is bound to stay for many more years to come since its infrastructure is much more flexible and polished compared to the soon-to-be antiqued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

If someone buys a game full price with online play at the forefront of their mind, they're a fool, and they deserve to be ripped off. I really wouldn't care, because I don't play online at all on any system.

Nintendo games are always more enjoyable when you're in the room with your opponents... especially Mario Party.... I want you to look me in the eye as you stab me in the back.

Online play is not a factor in any of my purchases and I use it very rarely. I would never buy an "online only" game, regardless of platform.

I guess Nintendo monitor the online traffic and know if there are someone playing. Surprised about Mario Kart, there should be people still playing it.

I think it's okay as long as online has been available for at least 5 years. After that, there should be no "compromise"
