So then the consoles need to be connected to the internet even when I'm just taking an SD card out of one and putting it in another etc?
What's ridiculous is that my Wii U can connect fine to a wireless router but in wii mode the encryption type isn't supported so I have to use a LAN adapter and I only have one of those. The lack of support for the encryption type was actually something I hoped would be remedied when I bought a Wii U.

I'm finally getting around to transferring data from the old wii to my wii u. However I have a question that I was hoping somebody might be able to answer:
In the instructions it says that both the target and source consoles need an internet connection, does this mean they both need to maintain an internet connection throughout the whole process with the SD card or is it just referring to the need to download the transfer channel using the internet from the store for each console?

The reason I ask is because I can only have one console connected to the internet at a time. If anybody knows if I can still do the transfer or not I'd really appeciate it.

you only need one internet connection at a time.

seriously? I've been googling and getting sites that say you need both connected for some kind of license transfer.

They both need to be connected, just not at the same time. The Wii needs to be able to download the Wii U Transfer channel from the Wii Shop, then it validates/removes shop authorisation from itself.

The Wii U also needs to download the transfer channel and it needs to transfer the Wii Shop authorisation as well.

Ok so I read somewhere that the discounted price for VC games will only work if you transferred the games from your Wii U using the transfer method. Snce there are a few VC games that I want off of my Wii like Sim City and R Type I am thinking of doing a transfer from my Wii. My question is if already have some saved files on my Wii U from Wii U games do they get erased when I do the system transfer or does the system transfer only effect the Wii portion of the Wii U?

If you've been playing the same game on Wii U that you played on Wii I'm guessing the save game files will be overwritten in the transfer. Probably the best bet is to decide which one you want to keep and delete the other one before transferring.

I also don't think for the promotion it matters so much if the game is actually installed on your Wii U, just that the shop data is transferred (you'd still need to do the Wii -> Wii U transfer though). It will likely be awhile before I get to find out though as Balloon Fight is the only VC game I owned previously which has been announced for the Wii U VC and the promo price is cheaper than the discount.

I'm holding off on the transfer, as we still use our Wii for Netflix and the Virtual Console/WiiWare games on it. I just hope I can keep the games on our Wii, AND buy them on the Wii U at the discounted price. It doesn't make a lot of sense to force people to transfer their Wii Virtual Console games over, then have to rebuy them but only really have one copy that is of any use.

There's a Netflix channel for Wii U, so really there's no reason not to transfer. You will have to transfer to get the discount because your Wii shop data is tied to your Wii console and the transfer process is the only way to move it other than sending both machines to Nintendo so they can do it for you. There's no other way for the Wii U to know you already own the game.

Nobody's forcing you to do anything.

Well, the point of using Netflix on another device, is so that I can play Wii U games while "watching" shows (the Wii U's Netflix Channel also does not function if you use an HDMI capture device, which is a bit of a bummer). Also, the Wii U does not have the Nintendo Channel, which I use each week, or I probably would have transferred back in November. The Wii to Wii U transfer process still has a few kinks it, and the video wasn't 100% clear that you MUST transfer. It initially sounded like you must, but then kind of like there MIGHT be a slight chance of syncing up the accounts somehow without doing the transfer.

To get the discounted price, do I have to transfer? I already own certain Virtual Console (and WiiWare) titles. If I can get the discounted price without transferring, I am not forced to transfer, you are correct. If I do have to transfer, then perhaps that is called being persuaded, instead of forced. ;)

I understand where you're coming from re: Netflix and Nintendo Channels, but since they're both free despite having your account information removed from your Wii nothing would stop you from downloading those channels again and continuing to use your Wii for that stuff post-transfer.

The only issue I found with the transfer is the need to keep space free on your Wii and Wii U Wii channel for the transfer channel. So if you keep like 100 blocks free (I think it's actually 76 or something like that) you shouldn't have any trouble.

And I'm willing to bet real money that you won't get any discount for Wii U VC content without previously having transferred stuff. The only other thing they could key off is your Club Nintendo account - assuming you linked it to your Wii Shop account and I doubt Nintendo would credit you on that basis alone or you wouldn't need to do the Wii transfer for downloads at all.

When the VC discount thing rolls on, I might transfer, but as of now I'm still waiting for the LostWinds transfer fix.
