Topic: Wii to Wii U System Transfer Question

Ok, I had a bit of a look around for an answer but my query is quite specific so here goes nothing.

For some stupid reason, I decided to input a Nintendo Points Card code into my Wii rather than my Wii U and whilst I easily could purchase some VC games, they would remain trapped on the Wii as I had no intention of doing a system transfer (I like playing Wii games on the original console).

Basically, I want to know if I was to copy / move all my Wii Saved Game data to an SD card (apart from Brawl & and Mario Kart but C'est la Vie) and then perform the system transfer, could I then reload the Wii game data onto the Wii that was on the SD card or has 'permission' been transferred too?

Also, do Wii VC games play any differently on the Wii U?

If you use Wii system transfer, every data (including Brawl and MKWii) on the Wii will be transferred to Wii U. Even Wii points will be transferred. You need an SD card for the process,

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

I dont think you can bring it back to the wii. But the wii games play exactly the same on the wii u, it just takes a little longer to get to ur games.

No, saved data can be copied and still used on the Wii (except for Smash and Mario Kart). Only digital games (Virtual Console and Wiiware) and eShop credit are permanently transferred.

I used my Rhythm Heaven Fever and Skyward Sword save data on both the Wii and Wii U. However, you cannot copy a game itself back onto the Wii if that's what you are asking.

Cheers!

Ok, now I just need to find that spare SD Card.

Smash Bros. and Mario Kart Wii are transferable. I did the transfer and it worked.

What happens if I transfer a Wii save file to my Wii U and play the Wii disc on my Wii U to progress in the game before eventually doing a system transfer? Will the old Wii save file overwrite the new Wii U save file when I do the transfer, so then I'd lose all my progress?

I think I read somewhere that it will overwrite it.

In another note, here is a list of other save files I discovered I couldn't transfer:

Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles
Last Story
Goldeneye 007
The Conduit
The Conduit 2
Sonic & the Black Knight
Sonic Colours
Monster Hunter Tri

There might have been one or two more, I just can't remember them.

Ironically, in the end I decided against a system transfer and instead bought Soldier Blade and Lords of Thunder. Still got 1000 points left but in the mood to finally finish Majora's Mask (the Cube disc version is too buggy).

Thanks to all for their input.

For whatever reason, Nintendo doesn't let you copy the save files of any game with online features, so that's why you couldn't copy those.
Any save files that you can copy to the SD card can be copied back to your Wii, but I think that you may have to start up the game before it'll let you copy its save data back - the Wii only lets you copy save data from an SD card for games that you've already played.

They can be transferred, but they still cannot be copied even after the transfer

As long as I remember to delete those save files from the Wii before doing the system transfer I should be fine though, right?

Yeah, it deletes ALL data that is transferred. Also, if you have data on the Wii U already, it will be overwritten

I wonder if the Nintendo wifi shutdown in may will affect the Wii->WiiU transfer app.

I kinda want to transfer just in case, but I don't want to leave my white Wii completely useless (it can't read discs).

Bloop.

The transfer isn't using the gaming network - hence why you can still use the Wii Shop after the Gamespy shutdown. Although it's true you cannot manually copy save data to SD for games with an online component (lame), the system transfer WILL copy that data. Hence my Samurai Warriors 3 save data making the move successfully - whew!

No it won't. It barely uses the internet at all. I believe it only connects so that Nintendo makes a record of the transfer in case someone tries to cheat the system (i.e. copy games, etc.)
