While transferring my save data from the Wii to my Wii U, I came across this error message:

"Could not access Wii System Memory. Refer to the Wii Operations Manual for details."

This message appeared on screen after putting my Wii data onto an SD Card and putting it back in the Wii U. The Pikmin began to march onscreen, but the message appeared shortly after the first few transfer messages (like "Moving Wii Shop Channel data from the SD Card..." or something similar) appeared. Unfortunately, I have lost my copy of the Wii Operations Manual, so I cannot refer to it for help. Does anybody know what I'm supposed to do? Also, will this mean that my Wii save data is lost forever? To clarify, my Wii has not been hacked. Thank you for the help!

Just follow the directions more carefully... You need a SD card to do this. First you need to use the Wii transfer channel on the Wii U's Wii menu to download the Wii's(not Wii U) Wii U transfer channel ability to an SD card. Second, put the SD card in the Wii(from the Wii U) to download the Wii U transfer ability to transfer from Wii to Wii U from the the Wii Shop channel on your original Wii, unlocked by the data now on your SD card. Third, download the channel from Wii Shop Channel. Fourth, put the SD card back into your Wii U(I think, and last time you need to move the SD card). Lastly, make sure your internet is running and both consoles are connected well to the internet. Watch the Pikmin transfer. If you downloaded both transfer channels to your consoles and connected to the internet to transfer, but you consoles still won't connect, then your Wii's data may be corrupted. Just make sure to follow the directions, but if it still messes up, you're going to have to call Nintendo. Hope this helps...

By the way, would it be safe to turn off the Wii U and try the data transfer again?

That's not a good idea. You can corrupt your files doing that

Don't shut off either one of your consoles no matter what. It would be better to choose the STOP option if it can't proceed and gives you the option to do so.

I had no other choice but to restart. The good news is that when I turned the system back on, it let me continue from where I left off. Keep your fingers crossed!

Back up your stuff first if you're having trouble. Copy all your saves to your computer

Actually, when it said, "Connection to the internet was lost", when I was transferring, I just chose TRY AGAIN, and it continued immediately after. Nintendo's not going to screw anyone over w/ this. If their transfer method fails while transferring your data, their system for consumers is faulty, making them as the business responsible. There's pretty much nothing you can do to mess up the transfer, unless your Wii is corrupted(not usually anyones fault, even Nintendo's), hit either one of your consoles w/ a bat, or you intentionally/accidentally spill water on your console. The last 2 are bad whether whether you're transferring or not as a side note...

I never got that message. Everything is working fine now, though!
