Topic: Wii lag on Wii U

All right, I threw in Punch-Out for Wii on my Wii U in the hopes that the HD console would eliminate the lag we once had with the Wii on an HDTV. Well, surprise, surprise. It didn't. In fact, I think the lag is worse. My question is simple: Have any of you experienced this on other games on the Wii U and do you know any remedies? Thanks.

I never had lag with my Wii.

Well, sadly, on the Wii U, there isn't much choice. It's HDMI or bust. Still, I'm enjoying my Wii U games, but combined with the loss of LostWinds, I'm regretting transferring my Wii stuff over. Ah well, maybe I can find a way to resolve it.

I'm not sure. It just won't transfer to the Wii U, so we might have completely lost it. Hadn't checked my Wii yet.

Why HDMI or bust? You could use your Wii component cables for your Wii U.

But don't you have to pick between one or the other? I didn't think having two external outputs going at the same time was a good thing, and I'd hate to keep switching back and forth if I don't have to.

I tried using component because i have an analog stereo and can't connect audio to it through HDMI (my tv has no outputs). I was impressed that it was able to output at 1080p, but the image was distorted with some doubling/shadowing on every object and it pretty much ruined the visuals. My cables are the official Nintendo brand, so either my TV has a problem receiving 1080p over component or the Wii U has a problem outputting it, but in my experience if you want 1080p you have to use HDMI.

Lag? What kind of lag, blurriness, rough animation, or what?

@romulux
Component cables aren't designed to send a 1080p signal the most they can normally do reliably is 1080i. That's your problem.

@OP
Just make sure you've turned off all processing. There's a good chance that you had been playing Wii games in some sort of game mode and now that you've switched inputs it's defaulted to some other mode. There's nothing inherently laggy about HDMI

Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

MasterGraveheart

@skywake: Actually, I just turned Game Mode ON, and it ended up fixing the lag issues. So, thank you for the idea! ^^;

I happily just beat the baguettes out of Glass Joe just now. All is right in the universe.

Thank you all for your input!

Even if you hadn't had transferred your games to the Wii U, your Wii still would have had lag from my experience. THERE IS NEVER LAG OF HD DISPLAYS 26'' OR LOWER AS A NOTE. Whenever I would hook up the Wii to 47'' LCD, there was so much lag that there was no way to play Guitar Hero, Dance Dance, or even Mega Man games, even through component. Now I have a PS 3D display(I do hope the Wii U uses 3D), that I really recommend playing on in a close quarters area if you can spare $200. With 3D, 240Hz, 2 HDMI IN, 1 COMP. IN, a headphone jack, USB, Motorstorm game, and 3D simulview glasses included, there was no better option in price or functionality. The only downside is that it didn't come with a remote(it counts as a monitor), but the Wii U TV control feature can control it, so good for me. Haha.

So what about 720p? Did the component cables produce the same crappy effect as 1080?

I didn't bother to try 720. It would have to be upscaled to 1080p by the TV and wouldn't look as good as HDMI at 1080 either.

The only reason this may be true is that smaller tv sets are cheaper and will have fewer features. There's absolutely nothing about the size of a tv itself that should change the processing that goes on inside it.

To that end, if you want to eliminate lag you need to go through all of your menus and turn anything that can be turned "off" off. Even in game mode there will still be options like dynamic contrast and edge enhancement that you don't need that may produce a little lag, and the game mode on some sets doesn't even cut any processing at all. Sometimes it just changes the color and sharpness options to be higher.

If your tv has input labels you can use them to cut lag as well, choosing "PC" or "game" is usually the best bet. You'll notice that a lot of options may be removed or grayed out once you do this, it's a good way to get rid of excess processing.

Punch-out just became available for native Wii U (not Wii mode) and the lag is just as bad, for both an HDTV and the Wii U screen. Sadly, the game is unplayable.

The reason Punch-out is the gold standard for measuring lag is that it's really the only game that requires reflexes be so quick as to make a win/lose difference. As a rule of thumb, if Soda Popinski is impossibly hard, your system has lag. If not, (and I've never seen this without a CRT setup), it doesn't. Or rather, it does, but in the latter case the lag is so minimal as to be negligible when compared to human reflex acuity.

All your other games have just as much lag as Punch-out but you don't notice them because in no other game is it really necessary to input commands in response to a stimulus faster than what your reflex plus the lag would allow.

Since when do component cables have less "lag" than HDMI cables??

Simple solution: play on a CRT TV if you don't want any delay whatsoever

The only way you can play in HD and not notice input lag is if you have a relatively small monitor. I still haven't seen any HDTVs with no input lag...it might be a while before that happens
However, there are many HD monitors out there that have <8 ms response time, so you won't even notice the lag....if it's really a problem

Uhh... this game is optimized for HD, so there is no lag. I went and checked after reading this, and no lag as far as I can see. If anything, your reflexes aren't fast enough on the HD version vs. non HD. The animations run better than ever. It's basically instantaneous, because of the HD.

BTW, this doesn't count as a Wii game, so I have no clue why you brought up such an old thread.

Ummm, guys? This is a WAY old topic (Back in November) and I've long since all but eliminated lag on my Wii U via Wii games, thanks to Game Mode, which as actually helped all of my games. The refresh rate is amazing and it's like I'm playing on an SDTV again. Soooo.... yeah. ^^;

But if you'd like to continue, please, go ahead. ^^
