It's even better than that: Even after the trial expires, and even after your free month is over, you can still connect a fit meter to activate the software. The deadline on January 31st is only there for downloading the trial. So unless you delete it from your Wii U system memory / USB Hard drive, you should be fine.
Keep in mind that you do need a balance board to play the game itself. It's highly unlikely Nintendo will ever sell them separately, either. They are available quite cheap used, but the ones I've seen at my local Gamestops are gross. There's little assurance that they will even function properly, as well. My little brother bought the only "clean" one he could find and he couldn't get his Wii to recognize it. Thing is, you don't know if they've been jump on, or used by a Gorilla or whatever.

Thank you everyone for the replies! Now I don't have to worry about scrambling to find my balance board in one of these boxes before a deadline to activate.
Sorry if I am reiterating the question, but it's not clear for me:
So I've downloaded the trial version, but I do not have neither a balance board nor a fit meter. I'm going to buy a second-hand balance board and a new fit meter next week and I was wondering if I can activate the trial version I downloaded after the 31st of January. I ask you guys because I don't want to end up with the fit meter and without the game itself!
