I have found the LAN adapter to be faster but I don't know how much of a difference it makes. I do remember Sakurai advising people to use it when playing Smash online.

Wired connection is better than WiFi because of the full duplex (the ability to send and receive data at the same time).

Always go wired. Wifi can be interrupted, and loses strength over medium distances. LAN cables have much more stability, and has way better latency than anything wireless could ever hope to be.

Get a USB hub. Get 3 and place the other 2 around the house. Maybe a 4th to take with you in a travel bag. They're very useful.

Thanks. I will do it. But what is the perfect split with the ports? Is it possible to use a USB hub such that I needn't use the two front USB ports of the WiiU?

If you get a four port, powered USB hub then you should be able to plug in your HDD (won't need a Y cable), the GC adapter and the LAN adapter. All into the hub. Just make sure it's a powered hub otherwise it'll be effectively useless on the Wii U.

And make sure it's rated for hard drives. There are cheap powered hubs out there that won't output enough juice to drive one (the better sellers actually state this up-front).

This makes basically no difference with my network.

I've got an 802.11ac AirPort Extreme and fibre-channel broadband. Never had an issue with online on my Wii U that wasn't server-related and those are pretty rare in my experience.
