I believe it was said you won't be able to do this.

But don't rule out the possibility of a future update adding in the functionality.

There was a short article on Nintendo World Report based on an interview with a representative that they had yet to post the transcript of. The key phrase was Wii games played on the Wii U would run "without any special features or GamePad support" which is kinda vague. Another site took that and wrote an article that said the Wii U "Cannot play Wii VC games on GamePad". At the end of the original article they said they'd post the full transcript later............ and they haven't done so yet.....

So I'd take that with a grain of salt. Given the thing has a sensor bar built in and it would be fairly safe to assume they'll keep the VC service running I'd say it probably does work in the way we expect. Until there is concrete confirmation otherwise obviously.

Cool info there, thanks everyone. I know that not all Wii games have "waggle" controls but the idea of playing some of the games that only really require normal joystick input is what I wad wondering about and the vc games too. It's just that I heard a rumour that the Wii U would have a Wii mode that would be used to play Wii games and that wouldn't allow gamepad use, how true this is though I don't know so thought I would ask the question.

I would hope that the gamecube could function as a classic controller (pro). Making every virtual console game playable.

I'm thinking we will get a Wii Sports U, but I think they want to wait. It'll probably come out next year.

Nope. When playing wii games the systems goes into wii mode and becomes a wii meaning the gamepad wouldn't function at all.

That's not confirmed. The only official statement on how backwards compatibility works is this

Nintendo wrote:

Nearly all of your existing Wii games can also be played on the Wii U console. In addition, your Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, and Nunchuk controllers at home are compatible with select Wii U software.

Many other Wii accessories, including the Wii Balance Board accessory, are also compatible with certain Wii U games.

Well I think wii games would work like DS games on 3DS since you can't StreePass or stay online with those games, so I assume GamePad won't work with wii games, but I hope I'm wrong, I'd like to see how certain games play without motion

Changing functionality and supporting the new features of the Wii U won't happen but that doesn't mean it'll end up running like the GC did on the Wii. No reason why you won't have an option to display the game on the GamePad screen or why GamePads and Pro Controllers won't simply look like Classic Controllers to a game running in "Wii Mode". Remember that the original DS gave you the option to display a GBA game on either screen in "GBA mode" and the 3DS allows you to use the Circle Pad as if it was a D-Pad in "DS mode".

Ontop of that I don't think there is any reason to believe that there will be any difference between a Wii U VC game and a Wii one. I would think it's likely that when you transfer VC games from Wii to Wii U you'll end up with Wii U VC games at the end of it.

The more troubling thing to me is that the GamePad has an optimum range of 24 feet. I can't see how I can take that far from the family room, let alone upstairs.

Got excited, and now that excitement has crashed and burned. Had this thread confirmed Wii games playable on the Wii U pad, the console would've been a must have for me. What disappoints me is that based on those patent images earlier, playing Wii games on the pad looks entirely possible. It's a big shame and wasted potential. Oh well, it just leaves me questioning an investment into the Wii U.

The cynic in me didn't think they'd allow you to play VC games on the GamePad. That would almost eliminate the need for NES games on 3DS VC (along with future sales, of course), as it would give Wii U owners another way to play NES games on a "handheld" (Nintendo is not CLOSE to being so generous as to allow long-time Wii owners to suddenly have access to countless console games in the palm of their hand). I didn't think it would extend to being unable to play Wii games on the GamePad, however. Probably boils down to money there as well, as that would enable Nintendo to make money on a Wii game a second time by offering the Wii U HD version. I'd consider buying Brawl again for 1080P and GamePad functionality, as would many others. And Nintendo knows it. Plus, sales of Wii U-enhanced NES, SNES, etc. games on Wii U VC.

This link actually just made me mad. I hope everyone that's talking about $300 being expensive knows that the 720 and PS4 will be more expensive. There's no question about it. If they want to be the top dogs again in Round 2, they will need more power and better games. The Wii U can produce games that far exceed the graphical power and whatnot of these end-of-life PS360 games. If the next Xbox and Playstation can only match that, what do they really have? Sure they've got their exclusives, but so does Nintendo. And if $300 is too expensive, I hope these people are ready to wait 6 years before the PS4 costs $350. [/offtopic]

Anyway, I'm a little sad I won't be able to play Super Castlevania IV on the GamePad alone, but it's okay. I can still run around in Assassin's Creed III via GamePad, right?

Hell now, I ain't rebuying my 500+ VC games just to get a Wii U version.

Nor am I spending a fortune to rebuy the countless VC games I have on my Wii. As is the case with me, I imagine there are a few gems that you'd be seriously tempted to rebuy, however. I'd love me some Super Castlevania IV on GamePad. That is what Nintendo is counting on. If I had any, I'd put money on enhanced Wii U VC games making an appearance.

@kyuubikid213
Ironic, I made this post mentioning Super Castlevania IV before I saw your post. Nice to see others share my love of SCIV, which is about the pinnacle of gaming, in my opinion!
