LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS

As far as Nintendo consoles go, only the handheld systems seem to be the platforms of choice when releasing fighting games. Granted, the company has made attempts to extend its fighting game fan base beyond its perennial Smash Bros. series with already a library of fighters that extends beyond what they offered with the original Wii. The Tekken series finally debuts on one of its non-handheld consoles in the Wii U, along with games such as "Injustice: Gods Among Us". Thanks to a better controller interface than the Wii, especially with the option to use the Pro Controller, fighting games on the Wii U seems like a viable option.

Still, with a family friendly approach, I doubt we'll ever see the likes of "Mortal Kombat" on the system, even though a bunch of MK games were released on the N64 and GameCube. Yeah, Guilty Gear, SFIV, DOA, Tekken, Naruto and a bunch of fighting games made their way onto Nintendo handhelds but strictly speaking Wii U... NADA! What gives? Even the Wii had "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom" & a free novelty coaster called "Castlevania Judgement". Ironic since the Wii U has the aforementioned Pro Controller.

Just look at GameStops Pathetic List of Wii U Fighting Games for Sale as evidence:
GameStop's Pathetic List of Wii U Fighting Games for Sale

How the heck would this ever be the only console for a gamer who happens to also enjoy fighting games?

Why are you blaming gamestop they don't create games, they just rip off there customers.If you want to point the finger at someone then blame third party developers,or better yet blame nintendo for not having a good relationship with third parties that creates fighting games.

What fighting games do the Xboc One and PS4 have? I think Xbox One only has Killer Instinct

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

@midnafanboy Not blaming GameStop and I do share your sentiment regarding their business model 100%. The GameStop link is there to merely show you how even a big corporation like it offers so little for Wii U fans as far as fighting games go BECAUSE like you suggested, Nintendo is to blame, firstly. If you search GS's catalogue, you'd see there are more fighting games for every other system. They can't have that bad a rep with third party devs since MK was on GBA, SFIV on 3DS, Guilty Gear on GBA, KOF on GBA, DBZ games all over the handhelds, and so on.

@DefHalan Not really considering the non-Nintendo consoles as they will unfortunately always have the Wii U beat in terms of fighting game library. They're newer systems and I think they already have more if you count MKX, UFC, & Fighter Within but that's not the point. For some reason, Nintendo likes to neglect fans when it comes to fighting games on their non-handheld consoles!

I would love to see more, but that is why I also have a PS3. A game like Ultra Street Fighter IV could perfectly go to Wii U, but Capcom does not seem to care. Same with Street Fighter III HD online.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

The only ones worth having are ones that were in Arcades first (and tested revised so balanced). (Ideally with the Arcade board the same as the home system). Like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars was.

@AdventCloud Well it's sort of the truth the wiiu only has like three fighting games, and gamecube game can't be played on wiiu.So they don't count the only fighting games that you named is Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that game can be played on the wiiu in wii mode.Cause the wiiu supports backward compatibility.

Nintendo makes one of the most popular fighting game series and the newest installment is coming to both 3DS and Wii U.

We had at launch three great fighting games : tekken tag 2, warrior orochi 3 and injustice... Quite a lot... But the sale number have been abysimal... Maybe, instead of blaming Nintendo or other company, consider that people here probably don t like them...(pity... I actually love tekken tag 2 and orochi 3}

Yeah, it's a real shame IMO. I hate the PS3 controller, and the D-pad on the on 360 is horrific; and I'm WAY too poor to afford a stick...I'd LOVE to see more fighters on Wii U just because I love the D-Pad so much . Sadly, the community for it does not exist, especially with the weird politicking that goes on around the fight-game scheme: "Pros play PS3!!!!1" . So we probably won't be seeing many more fighters for the Wii U T_T. I did pick up Tekken Tag 2 recently just to scratch the fighter itch...I love the fricken' D-Pad...<3

@DefHalan Fox, man (or fox?), like I wrote, Nintendo does offer a lot of fighters, but mainly for its handhelds.
Smash Bros. is great and that's something Xbox and PS will envy for sure but they have the capacity to release the fighters its competitors do. I'd welcome it.

@arnoldlayne83 I know. Props to Nintendo for trying, I suppose... but I just don't get why it doesn't happen with their handhelds. Surely we're considering at least a good portion of the 3ds fan base would buy a Wii U.

It depends on how far back you go. Wii U launched with Tekken and Orochi Hyper 3, which were the most current games out at the time. It also got Injustice which came out along the Xbox 360 and PS3 version. Those games being on Wii U didn't entice gamers enough to get Wii U, even though they were the current games, so now there is going to be an ultimate version of Orochi Hyper 3, and PS4 got the ultimate version of Injustice. It basically had 3 of the most current games until ones like MKX and Tekken got announced. Namco hasn't said Tekken 7 will be cross-gen, but it probably will be, so it depends on how much people want a 7th gen game on Xbox One and PS4, as most of the releases are.

There haven't been anymore games announced for Wii U, but it will have Smash Bros.

How many fighters do their competitors (Microsoft and Sony) make? The problem is with 3rd parties, which means if you want Mortal Kombat on Wii U, buy WB games (such as Injustice). 3rd Parties look at how much they can make. If you aren't purchasing a companies games on Wii U, don't be surprised when they don't release games later for Wii U. Genres don't make much of a difference in 3rd Party's eyes

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Just joking. You know, I never really thought about how little those companies focus on developing their own fighting game IPs. I suppose they don't have to with all the third parties making them instead.

I agree with you about not seeing games on Wii U because of sales, to an extent, but seriously, handhelds are NOT an ideal platform for your average fighting game fan and those same third parties release a bunch on Nintendo handheld games. I guess it's because Nintendo makes the best handhelds in general and nobody gives a Falco turd about any other one.

Yet, I still see a lot of fighting games on the PS VITA even though it can't sell for crap. Leads me to believe Nintendo doesn't care for third party developers in the first place. Why should they? They have some of the most iconic IPs but that's not particularly great for fighting game fans. It's as if as soon as the 3D era hit, with the advent of PS1, Xbox & PS2 eventually, the third party devs didn't care either (except when it comes to handhelds because there is no competion - Nintendo makes the best handhelds as far as I'm concerned).

It's kind of a weird considering how Nintendo 3DS has a good selection. Why not Wii U? Early still but I'm afraid the Vita, even when it's long dead (probably sooner than later) will sadly have more fighters. I don't get it.

@Hernandez LOL. That Dune clip was probably the best response I've ever seen in a thread. Going to amend my opening text with a quote to your post.

Normally I'd take your word for it, but Gizmodo, Engadget, etc. all seem to disagree.

"If you play a ton of fighting games or just loathe the Xbox 360 d-pad, you will dig this controller"

Well, I disagree with Gizmodo, Engadget, etc. It is SLIGHTLY better, but it's not better than the Wii U or Xbox One D-pad, though, IMO. The open cornered joystick-ness type input doesn't change, regardless of the the shape you're touching, which is all that changes. To each their own.

Well since Soul Calibur completely torpedoed itself into irrelevance last gen, I've been more or less lost for what fighting franchise to pick up. I never really got into Street Fighter or its 600 versions of the same game, and Tekken hasn't been my thing so far, but I did buy Tag Tournament 2 on the U.

I'm at a stage now where I'll try almost any fighting franchise if it makes itself available to me, so now would be a great time for another fighter to appear on the Wii U. PS3 has SC 4 and 5, Tekken 6, King of Fighters 13, Street Fighter... 4?, Marvel vs Capcom 3, BlazBlue whatever, Dead or Alive 5, Persona 4 Arena, and probably another half dozen I'm forgetting, so it looks like I'll have to buy them there.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

SCRAPPER392

@Caviarmeths
I would just wait until the end of the year, when Smash Bros. comes out. Buying Tekken Tag 2 isn't worth as much buying yesterday, as it was on launch, and a new one is coming out. In otherwords, it would be more worthwhile to wait for the new one, than going back and playing the older entries. This goes for any game, really, unless you're getting it for like $15 or less. Also, I know you have Tekken, but I mean for the other games, too.

Maybe if Smash Bros. sells well enough, they'll release it. Who knows, right?
