I wonder if they are just waiting for the right price.

In my opinion they should invest more heavily into smaller studios, maybe even western studios and push them to a nintendo quality level -

"I mean they spent all this money on getting into the mobile game market (which I don't care for, but hope it works out well for them), but won't invest in new game development studios"

Good point! We are all hoping for new Metroid titles, good third-party and second-party stuff. But all we hear is the milk-cow Amiibo's, free to play nonsense, and now mobile! I still think Nintendo would have been in a better situation if they had a very powerful console without tablet nonsense and a big assortment of good third-party games (that get some marketing). But micro-transactions and Amiibo's: It doesn't cost them a thing, yet makes lots of money. Its sad but true.

Honestly instead of outright buying other studios they need to work on expanding the ones they have and reaching out to guys they already have a relationship with.

They should start off by expanding Retro and NST. Retro should be 343 or Naughty Dog sized being able to work on more than one big project at a time. I'd also like to see them try out a new IP.

NST I'd have shutter into two teams The first working on smaller MariovDK like games for the eshop, and a second going back to working on full featured console projects like Project Hammer and they're gamecube games.

I'd also suggest outright buying Next Level, Monster, and Valhalla Games and put them to work on a mix of Older and Newer IP.

Alongside that start to from whole new Studios in the European Market even if it will take up to 3-4 years to get to full productivity.

WAT!

I repeat my previous point. This is a stupid idea since they can just make a game for Nintendo without Nintendo needing to spend money buying them. I mean, MAYBE if someone else ends up wanting to buy them, that would make some sense. But until then, that's a pointless move.

though I do agree that Retro needs to be vastly expanded (which to be fair, I've heard has happened to some degree)

I don't know about those devs in particular but what I've been saying repeatedly for the last few years, to seemingly little agreement, is that Nintendo should start making exclusivity contracts with their best indie developers.
The fact that games like Shovel Knight and Steamworld Dig both started as Nintendo exclusives but then went to other platforms is a big missed opportunity in my opinion. Given how popular and successful those games were, and given that they'd already shown a desire to favour Nintendo, the amount of incentive they'd need to remain Nintendo exclusives would surely have been small.
Thoughts?

You know, I've been a big advocate of Nintendo buying development studios or at least some IPs that have not been used for a while, but I like this idea as well. Nintendo does need to throw some money at developers and get some exclusivity rights. Shovel Knight is exactly the type of game that Nintendo needs to be exclusive. It isn't enough that Nintendo IPs are exclusive. They need 3rd parties.

While its true enough that Nintendo can just contact work out to these studios, I think that investing in buying these studios, would be an ivestment in the American development community. Problem is as much as we want Nintendo to make a western development come back they need to build and Base and Retro and NST are too deeply embed in the current NCL culture.

Honestly that's not going to happen unless its work for contract or a major partnership like Sakurai Samurai or Dillon's. The Majority of indies these days want to hit on as many platforms with a timed exclusive for publicity.
