On it's own, it's at least decent. But when compared to the competition, it's really dated and behind the times. If Nintendo want's 3rd party support, they're going to need to take online interaction more seriously.
The solid truth behind the matter. People can sugarcoat it no matter what. Nintendo's internet may be functional, but it isn't where it needs to be. Think DeNA's service could help with this, or am I talking completely out of left-field?

What is poor about the actual network?
I know Nintendo is behind on software features but what about the network is bad in comparison to Xbox Live and PSN?

For me, it's ultimately the features, so perhaps my issues have little importance on this thread Truthfully, I haven't played enough many games online for me to assess the network's stability, though it's rather unfortunate that lag still exists on SSB [but whoever posted about the users' internet connection is right]

That is kinda my point. I find a lot of people aren't sure how to actually ask for when talking about services. They lump all online features under the Network because they aren't sure how to make a blanket statement. I want to encourage people to stop trying to make blanket statements. Focus on what you want and talk about that. It will send a clearer message and help others understand what you are talking about.
Also I haven't played a single fighting game without lag.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

In terms of speed and power, they're very good - like any game out there, the servers tend to act up a bit at first, but after a month or two, everything's going smooth (look at MK8, Smash 4, or Bayonetta 2). Problem is, they're not as good as some competitors (not just Sony and Microsoft), and that makes people immediately think it's bad.
Really, the only drawback of Nintendo's online services is how disorganized they are. Most of the time, it's very bothersome to search for anything specific unless you exactly know the name of it (be it a game/video in the eShop, or specific rooms/people in online games). But when it comes to certain games, people blame Nintendo for online issues they have absolutely nothing to do with (like the online for CoD or MH3U/MH4U), like people did back then with the PS3 (which had perfectly fine online capabilities for titles handled by Sony).

Fair enough. I am jealous, though: 40% of my fights are with some lag—and I have good internet connection and speed.

I pay way to much for internet and I still get lag, fighting games just require to fast of inputs for online to work well for them.

People are convinced Pay-to-play automatically makes it better. Makes them feel better throwing money down the toilet Though TBH, Nintendo does obviously struggle making some aspects of their online optimized. Other than that, I don't know what people are complaining about. Smash, Mario Kart, Bayonetta, (and likely Splatoon) all have great online play (I've play online on all systems).
There is always room for improvement, but as long as they stay free I'm willing to cope with the growing pains.

I am right there with you. I was a Xbox Live Gold member for about 9 years and it is so nice not having to pay for it anymore.

I know this isn't addressed to me, but don't get me wrong: I'm here to suffer through the growing pains as well. I love Nintendo—they're my favourite developer and gaming company—but by no means would I want to be considered a Nintendo apologist, and blindly defend Ninty. Granted, I can see how my argument was a bit blind on the other side

Iono if you have the numbers, but where does the Pay-to-play numbers go, exactly? Just into the general Microsoft/Sony fund, or does it go towards improving their respective networks?

From what I saw it went into them getting an ESPN app that I will never use and other features like that. Since they added Party Chat it has basically been put into other areas outside of Online.
I guess they also didn't shut down game servers which was nice. I was able to play Shadowrun for a long time
Nintendo's Online Network is bad? I haven't noticed any issues on the Wii U or 3DS. Sure, Brawl was a laggy mess, but in my experience, Nintendo's latest online offerings haven't been bad at all.
And before anyone calls me out, I play(ed) Assassin's Creed III and IV, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS, Pokemon X and OR, Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil Revelations and Mercenaries on 3DS, Mario Kart 7, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and Super Street Fighter IV 3D online and have only ever had issues with Dead or Alive and Street Fighter. All of the other games have little to no issue online.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
'Wasn't acceptable' Pfft. Tell me what you'll accept before you buy the game, mate. Smash Bros isn't meant to be an online game, really. Why even bother with Smash 3DS's horrible online? You can't even play online while on public transit, anyway. If you want a great online game then play Monster Hunter on Wii U or 3DS XL. The Nintendo network isn't flawed, as other games can run fine on it. Nintendo just hasn't made their multiplayer games work well on it (all 2 of them). Mario Kart and hopefully Splatoon being the exceptions.

This was inevitable. It's Nintendo's fault for making puns out of all of their titles.
As an Australian....... a simple demonstration using speedtest.net....
Perth -> Perth: 15ms (this is my connection, if I had a fantastic 'nets I could push this down to <5ms)
Perth -> Sydney: 66ms (Australia is a big place)
Perth -> Tokyo: 155ms
Perth -> LA: 240ms (Not only is Australia big but so is the Pacific)
Perth -> Paris: 377ms (basically the furthest place from here internet-wise)
When I play Nintendo games online usually I'm playing against a bunch of people from Japan. Well except for when they only allow me to play with people "in the same region", thanks Wii Sports Club. And the latency to Japan isn't fantastic but it's pretty good relative to other countries. When I play games on other platforms? Not uncommon to be stuck playing against Americans. So of course I think Nintendo's service is pretty decent.... and for the same reasons that Americans think it's not "upto scratch".
