Nintendo has always been good at defining each new console as a step toward a new direction. 64, Cube, and even the Wii all stand alone as interesting little companions for playing games with unique designs that define that era. The Wii U does not. It feels like the Wii, but less cohesive, and in fact is kind of a mess (too many controllers, clumsy menu systems, etc.). It seems as though Iwata and co. became so blinded by the success of the Wii that they lost hold of the originality and boldness that helped define the consoles before it, and got a bit lazy. Unfortunately, the other guys, Sony & Microsoft, are in the opposite mode of thinking. The 360 and PS3 were also huge successes, but instead of resting on former glories they are in an arms race for BIGGEST and BEST. Which isn't a bad thing, competition pushes things forward!

Nintendo needs to compete. This "we're going our own way" mentality isn't doing anyone any good. It's allowing Ninty's execs to live in a sort of delusional haze where everything is "the best decision for Nintendo." But I'm not sure they can compete with the Wii U. In a few years, it will be irrelevant to the hardcore gamers, outside of the Nintendo fan-base, as well most likely seem very out of date in comparison to the latest model of iPad, for the casuals.

I still really like my Wii U. I love Nintendo games, and I enjoy rooting for the underdog! But, will I still be interested in fighting "the good fight" and shelling out $60 for underdog titles in a few years? Maybe not. It's occurring to me that the affection I have for the Wii U is running on fumes of their former consoles. Nintendo needs to step out from under this current situation and REALLY go for it. Take Sony and Microsoft head on. What that means exactly - a new console in the near future or a major update to the Wii U? Who knows, but either way I'm ready to jump. I want Nintendo to define a new era not just exist alongside the current one.

I could not have said it better, and although the Wii U is fully capable of delivering the quintessential Nintendo experience, it is a bit of a mess, sometimes you really enjoy that aspect of it, and sometimes you really loathe it.

I also agree that Nintendo needs to stop non-competing with Microsoft and Playstation, and yeah, it allowed Nintendo's execs to puff away on the Wii magic pipe without considering (or caring?) how their rivals were going to tackle next-gen. As far as a couple of years from now, I can still see myself buying Nintendo AAA titles if the Wii U happens to be around, but otherwise, it will very much most likely be my second fiddle console.

As far as Nintendo fans, yes, they are the most fanboyish, "living in a bubble" type at times. If you forget about sites like IGN, etc, the vast majority of PS3 and X360 members are not loyal to the system. IE, my brother has had a 360 since launch back in fall 05, the Last of Us intrigued him enough that he sold his console on the spot and picked up a used PS3.

You said words but most of them don't mean anything other than what we already know. I'm not falling for intellectual discussion that has nothing to say and ignores that Wii U's problem has been poor marketing and over-reliance of Mario as the answer to everything.

Also saying Nintendo got lazy with the hardware is the opposite of the reality. Software is where Nintendo stopped trying (...in terms of creativity at least...by Nintendo standards of course)

I think you can remove those last two words, 'at times'.

... because Nintendo fans have been living in a bubble since birth.

I used to be one and guess what? I missed out on all those classic games on the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PSone and PlayStation 2.

All because I 'supported' a single company for years and years, like a childish little sod.

Thank God I treated myself to an Xbox 360 after two 'null and void' years with my Wii. I even have a PlayStation 3 now too!

There's no need to be a Nintendo fanboy knowing you are missing out on an absolute wealth of brilliant titles on the other console(s).

Pretty much what I was thinking while trying to read a wall of text that wasn't really related to the topic.

Pretty much this. Run of the mill uninspired sequels a plenty'

I'm not even certain what I said is fully accurate, I think it's the Mario games bringing other stuff down if anything. Wonderful 101 is incredibly creative and Pikmin 3 even at worst deserved to be considered a full sequel and an actual new game for the series (fruit mechanics ). Post-Mario Kart 8 looks way better for interesting titles from them on this console, that I'm certain of though.

I've always liked Nintendo, and their consoles have sentimental value (I don't even know), plus I hate Xbone so much.

Why do we care? As others have said, the reason we care is because we invested our money into it. It's really that simple. Should we care? I think so. Nobody wants to spend hundreds of dollars on something and then we don't get our money's worth out of it. I think Nintendo's first party titles alone will allow us to get our moneys worth (between Mario, Zelda, Smash, etc.) but if we could get more third party support then that would make our big purchase all the more worth it.

Well that's an oxymoron in itself. If you want one, then you are interested in it, wanting something means it had to at the very least pique your interest with it's existence.

He did say he has interest in it, it's just very little but technically he has interest in LOL.

When someone says they have "very little interest" it's implying although they think it is interesting, they don't have enough interest to buy the product. If you want something, you intend to buy it eventually, which would indicate that you have more than "very little interest". If he elaborated he could make sense of it but he didn't. It's still an oxymoron as the statement stands.

I think Nintendo does have a certain charm / innocence that a lot of the industry is lacking…….but with that said, yes, a lot of Nintendo fanboys completely disregard anything that isn’t Nintendo (which is just annoying), and man, are you missing out on a lot.

On the most basic of levels, I care because I spent $300 on the system and I expect it to last me the generation as when I bought my Wii and when I had my PS2 and when my parents got me my PS1...

On an emotional level, I care because Nintendo is a great company and, in my eyes, it would mean the end for gaming if Nintendo ever went under.

I will support the Wii U until Nintendo comes around with it's next system. If Nintendo should ever fall, I'll still be a gamer. As to which platform I'd go to, maybe I'd go back to Sony or see what Microsoft has in store for two generations.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

Fun Fact:
All diehard "fanboys" of whatever console kind of disregard anything that doesn't pertain to their system.

"Fanboy" is just a term that means you don't agree, most of the time.

Statements that result in the word "fanboy":
I like Kinect = fanboy
The GamePad is cool = fanboy
I'd rather play AC or CoD, rather than inFamous or Killzone = fanboy
My body is Ready = fanboy
Why aren't there more PS Move or PS Eye games? = fanboy
I like 3D = fanboy
Smash, Kart, or X are my most wanted games = fanboy
My Playstation 3 is used mainly for bluray = fanboy
I'm excited about Kinect = fanboy
You're internet is slow = fanboy
I have an Xbox, PS, and Nintendo console = you're still a fanboy
etc...

Everone's a fanboy. If you don't think you're a fanboy, that probably means you're a fanboy. This why I can't stress enough, that you need to accept who you are Caring is sharing, which is why I care about Wii U.

@IlovedemRPGS I didn't explain myself well enough sorry. I am interested in the system, but as of right now, would not purchase one. I would like to see where it goes before putting down my money. There's not enough Nintendo and 3rd party exclusive games on it that would justify a purchase right now in my opinion (although that could change if sales pick up in the west). And you are correct, we should have faith in the Wii U to succeed. The problem I feel is that Nintendo thinks it can go on Autopilot and sales will pick up without them trying.

We're going on a bear hunt! We're going to catch a big one!

I think it's really sad that a large percentage of Wii U owners won't experience The Wonderful 101 or Pikmin 3, that people who don't own a Wii U won't experience these great Nintendo games on a controller with a really nifty touchscreen, and that if Nintendo disappeared the world would forget these icons and moments of popular culture.

If you think how people get their knickers in a twist over a TV programme like Firefly, The Tick, Red Dwarf, Twin Peaks or Star Trek being cancelled, imagine what it would be like if the channel that made all your favourite cult programmes was shut down and took all of these programmes with it, and all you were left to watch 'the grown up channels' which was non stop repeats of Storage Hunters, Will and Grace and Father Downing Investigates.

Yup, I'm saying PS and Xbox just produce the gaming equivalent to Storage Hunters.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

People care about their consoles because it's one of their hobbies - people pick up hobbies because they are things they enjoy and like to do. The struggle and/or disappearance of any hobby would be upsetting for the people involved in it, wouldn't you say?

As far as the fanboy discussion, well, it's just a word that was created to be hurtful (hence the "boy,", implying lack of maturity or knowledge) toward anyone you don't agree with. It's just a slightly diluted form of ethnic/gender/sexual stereotypes as far as I'm concerned - it's an ugly, disgusting word only used by the desperate and uneducated.

Yup, I'm saying PS and Xbox just produce the gaming equivalent to Storage Hunters.

But your analogy is wrong since the Way TV is produced isn't similar to consoles at all and were aleardy seeing a massive shift in a lot of TV moving to the web or guys like Netflix, amazon, and Microsoft opening up production houses.

As to your second point if you really believe that about the xbox and PlayStation I can't help but feel sad for you, and it also makes your anagy even more wrong.

Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo would be the channel owners in this case, and while they have in house products the majority of the content on all three systems is third party. So even if your buying a Wii U stuff like storage Wars would still be on said console.

The Wii is a prime example of this having the most shovekware if any system while still being filled with great content from Nintendo and other third parties.
