I've seen this argument when people are saying the GC adapter shouldn't exist or that it's lack of compatibility isn't an issue.
And it's completely invalid. With every other controller that comes standard with a console with the exception of the Wii Remote, the next generation iterated on it. The DS4 is a natural evolution of the DS2/3. People are still getting the same fundamental design and layout. The SNES iterated on the NES controller. The PS1 controller iterated on the SNES controller, and the GC and Dreamcast iterated on the N64 controller. The GC controller however, wasn't. It was left by the wayside. The Pro controller isn't like the GCN controller. This is made worse by the fact that the GCN controller was incredibly well received and remains beloved today. So there absolutely should be some sort of expectation that the GCN controller returns. Every other controller from major console makers has.

It basically is. A more comfortable molding and minuscule D-pad do not make it an entirely unique beast.
Button layout, molding, stick layout, trigger shape, analog triggers.
The GCN layout is simply better than the typical layout in most games, and worse for a few. It really doesn't make sense that it hasn't been adopted more heavily.

I adore the GC controller however I don't think the additional support is required. The wii was a gamecube as well as a wii so i totally get the support even though it wasn't required for brawl. The pro controler and the gamepad (same amount of buttons and functionality so it counts) are the current evolution of the traditional controller. So honestly the gc controller is not required and am very shocked that Nintendo even bothered to make the adapter. I saw that as a company listening to some vocal fans which was a really nice gesture. I don't knock anybody for using or liking the gc controller but it really was not needed for the new smash.
Before somebody runs me over with a car for saying this I use alternative controllers all the time. I build and play with arcade sticks for fighter games so I totally understand wanting a familiar but alternative (since the wiiu is not a gamecube) way to play. I'll buy one of the hori fight pads at some point (if the controller is crap i can gut it for a stick)

The adapter was made to capitalize on the demand for the Gamecube controller in Smash. It wasn't really meant to be used elsewhere. The only other possible uses I can think of is Virtual Console.

Wii BC with GC compatible games would be nice. Or compatibility with games that support the Pro Controller but don't require clickable analogs or the L bumper.

Didn't they already say the adapter works only for Smash?
I personally didn't love the GCN controller, especially after playing with the Wii U Pro. If it's true that it's good only for Smash, I in no way see any way to justify getting it.

Eh, would be nice, but I'm not familiar with the process of doing such a thing. There may be hoops to jump through

The GC controller had too small d-pad, the analog sticks broke too easily (by loosening), the z-button was awkward, and there was only 3 shoulder triggers instead of 4. The select button was also missing, and the cord was ridiculously short. The only positives was the fact that two of the shoulder triggers were analog (which in my books is not a positive though), and the ergonomic design of the controller was good. Not better than- say- the Pro Controller- but good anyway. It was a decent controller in it's day... but even back then i preferred the ps2 controller for it's durability. Bottom line: I don't understand the fuss behind the GC controller at all...

Yes, the controller has some elements that would need to be adjusted to the modern era, but the controller layout, unique triggers (they clicked, so they had 2 digital settings), and ergonomics were top notch. So, given that Nintendo never evolved that GC design with the things you mentioned, it absolutely makes sense that people want it back.
Also, for the record, at the time, 2D games were all but dead, and the select button didn't do anything in most games.

I'd be happy if it worked in Wii Mode as a Gamecbe controller and for the N64 VC when it comes out. Other than that I don't really care that much. But if it's only going to work for Smash? It really diminishes the value of it. I understand them not supporting it in other new games remembering that there weren't that many games on the Wii that supported it. What I don't understand is them not supporting it at least to somewhere in the ballpark of what they did on the Wii.
