Topic: Who won the "next-gen" launch? (According to Jim Sterling)

his point is pretty valid. Console that actually does new things + more time to get games anyone cares about = better. Too bad self-important children still think Nintendo should copy + paste the competition.

Didn't know anyone else here watched Escapist Magazine, although I'm a Zero Punctuation guy, myself.

Anyway, I like, and agree, with his point. Beyond the graphics of the PS4 (and more than likely One, I haven't seen one in person yet) there isn't much I am excited about. I only own a Wii U, but one of my college hallmates has one and afters seeing it in action, I can agree that those visuals are impressive, but that's all I can say for it. The touchpad was used in a way that doesn't really warrant a touchpad at all (they could have just kept the Start button) and there wasn't much else on the system as a whole that was greatly different from the PS3 to make me want one.

The Wii U is a vast change over the Wii with the return of a traditional controller and a touchscreen that both allows you to game around your house and change the way the games can play. Stuff that couldn't be done on the Wii are now possible on the Wii U. Stuff once only possible on the DS can be done on the big screen. It's exciting. New. Fun!

I hope the Wii U picks up soon. Even if it only warrants GameCube levels, the GameCube was a damn fine console with many brilliant games. Can't wait for X, Bayonetta 2, Zelda, and the bounty of other awesome games on the way.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

Agree Nintendo's console was the biggest revamp of this generation of consoles. The tablet input was a brilliant idea even though alot of developers dont seem to want to touch it. It's the idea of motion control but one step further, plus the consoles design and OS has been worked into something much more user friendly and provides a better experience for the consumer.

From the perspective of upgrade value the upgrade from Wii -> Wii U is far greather than PS3 -> PS4 or Xbox 360 -> Xbox One. The Standard defention up to HD makes it worth the purchase, seeing mario in 720p and 1080p was great. Also the power of the Wii U is again a far bigger bump over the other consoles.

I chose the Wii U because it appealed to me most due to the quality of nintendo's games, the console its self and the hardware, I wont be picking up a PS4/XBO.

I love Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft - why? I am a true gamer.

Watch in two months were going to be see articles about how royally screwed the Wii U is. The biggest problem that Nintendo consoles have is when they do get games they're really good but the droughts inbetween and lack of any real third party support isn't great.

WAT!

Hard to say at this point. I will agree that the Wii U has the most innovation, but in the end, Reggie is right. It's all about games, games, games, and none of the three had an impressive launch line up. Consoles rarely do.

By the end of the generation, I will have bought a PS4 as my home entertainment box and for JRPG exclusives. I hope by then that my Wii U will have both its own impressive exclusive software line-up as well as a lot of great classics on its VC. I own a fairly modern PC, so there is literally no point in buying an Xbox at any point in time.

If the Wii U won the "next-gen" launch, then it won by default, because--really--all three launches were pretty bad. And it's pretty telling that the only "killer app" (that being Super Mario 3d world) has come out one full year since launch--and on the weakest system!

Could that mean that PS4/Xbox one titles that are worth buying a new system for will also take a full year to release? possibly even longer due to their hardware?

Killzone and Forza are killer apps.

Who had the least flames on their plane as it went down? Nintendo's horrible branding and lack of games, or the PS4/Xbone's launch issues and lack of games? If we're going off of now then the Wii U easy because it has plenty of games. If we're going off of the day one launch, PS4 easy. IMHO Wii U is just as guilty as the PS4/Xbone for continuing the last gen. It brought a fancy controller, and claims of redefining everything, but if you look, no one has used it yet (to it's full potential) and it's just getting ports. The power brought by the PS4 can give us better AI and physics, and the touchpad has plenty of potential too. The Wii U brought about just as much new as the PS4 did.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

They may be to you killers app, but Killzone based on reviews is just another shooter in terms of quality and Forza is a racing game which has never been shown to be a system seller before(hell i don't even know anyone who truly likes racing games).

@Warruz You mean like NSMBU was just another NSMB game? The Wii U had no killer apps at this time in it's lifespan. Compare the PS4 to the Wii U at launch and they're about just as bad. (Once inFAMOUS: Second Son comes out though.... I may just have to get me a PS4)

If those were killer apps with their metacritic scores of 74% and 82% then the Wii U had killer apps in Nintendo Land (77%), Zombi U (77%) and New Super Mario Bros U (84%). I mean they're all decent exclusives but I wouldn't call any of those titles "killer apps".

A killer app is something like The Last of Us, Halo, Super Mario Galaxy, Portal, Bioshock and so on. Or something that's not as critically well received but sells units like Wii Sports did. Super Mario 3D World is one such game, these new consoles don't have anything like that so far. They will eventually but they don't have it yet.

@skywake I think inFAMOUS: Second Son could very easily be the killer app for the PS4. Heck, I haven't played a Sony console since the good ol' PS2 and I'm thinking of jumping back to it solely for that game. I still haven't found myself a killer app for the Wii U yet, and I'm looking for every excuse to buy one.

At the end of the day MicroSony consoles are just a GTA box. But if you own a more superior PC they can be just considered a box... A really gigantic box of empty promises and false dreams

I'll just repost what I said on Reddit;

While I disagree with Sterling's wording, he's got an excellent point; for all the hype surrounding the PS4 and Xbox One, the Wii U is the one that's the truly different beast this console cycle. Miiverse has cultivated a surprisingly productive community (if a bit naive at times), the gamepad is a truly a comfortable all-in-one controller, and the console is providing experiences that are far different than what the Playstation and Xbox brands (both old and new) are providing. PS4 and Xbox One, despite being solid consoles that look to have a long life ahead of them, are simply pushing the current trends that the PS3 and Xbox 360 rode on for almost the entirety of the consoles's lives. The Wii U, despite being technologically underpowered and being host to franchises that are +20 years old, is providing something that the other two newer consoles aren't providing. True, Nintendo does need to learn from Sony and Microsoft, but Sony and Microsoft could learn a thing or two by paying attention to Nintendo.

@SkywardLink98 Im not defending the Wii U launch either, but lets not say Xbox one or PS4 has system sellers at launch either.

The PS4 sold 1 million units in 24hrs. I don't think Sony are too concerned that you don't think any of their launch games are "system sellers".

@Warruz Oh I don't think anyone could defend the launch of the Wii U I was just saying that I still haven't found a reason to buy a Wii U, but inFAMOUS: Second Son may get me to buy a console a couple months after launch, which is something I normally advise against. The launches are both horrible, I'm just saying that if inFAMOUS: Second Son is good it'll recover much faster.

Im not the only one, sales ≠ quality which is the point im discussing.
