Topic: When should I get the wii u? now or next year?

Posts 1 to 20 of 22

According to my parents, the thing is still pricey and I still want to get the darn thing. So I want to know when I should get it? Now or next year?

The reason why I'm asking this is because I bought the Wii so late around 2009 so I only had so little games to play although part of the reason why I wasn't satisfied with the Wii was that it didn't have exactly the games that I wanted to get.

So I don't want to do that same thing for the Wii U and I really need your suggestions whether now or next year will be a good time to get the Wii U because I have to get a UPS as well.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

If you buy one now you can take advantage of the Nintendo Premium Points where you get vouchers for eshop games but it ends this year, the Wii U has a good collection of games at the moment with more on the way so I wouldn’t worry about it’s catalogue plus also I’m not sure if it’s still going at the moment but if you get Mario Kart 8 you get a free game too.

Ultimately do you like the games that are out?

There is no telling when will be best to get a Wii U. I'd assume the longer you wait, the better the bundles are going to become. So in a way, waiting creates the possibility of getting a better value purchase. However, you would be missing out on playing games as they come out, like Mario Kart 8 now.
My suggestion is to not rush, and grab whatever Smash Bros. bundle, or a holiday bundle if you don't like Smash Bros. for some reason. It'll likely be the cheapest Nintendo will go for a while as they expect the game to drive massive sales. And you will be able to play Smash on Day 1; so it is a win win.
That being said, it is all a matter of how long you feel like waiting for a price drop.

The Mario Kart free game promotion runs through the end of this month.

Have you looked at the Wii U game catalog and seen games you really want to play? If there's one of the MK8 "free" games you really want, and you also really want MK8, you basically have a price reduction on the Wii U system right now.

Mmm... though question....

There are pro and cons on both way, hoping to be helpful, I am going to write my personal considerations:

1) Getting it NOW: The games library is pretty consistent, many of the launch or early games are already heavily discounted (I would suggest as MUST the following: ZombiU, Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101, Darksiders 2, Pikmin 3 and AC4), the line-up at the moment is full of very good games, which will keep u engaged for a long time already. The more you wait, the more your ideal queue of "must" titles will grow and age. Consider that some very nice multiplayer games (MH3 Ultimate, MK8) are now on the pike of online gaming... if you wait there would be less user to play them online. Moreover some "AAA" games will be launched in the following months (Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, Bayo 2, Xenoblade, Project Cars, Watchdogs) so, I would exclude a price drop of the console in the following seasons..... Last but not least, till the end of July there will be the promotion on Mario Kart: You'll get an extra free game from a list (which change between EU and US) for every Mario Kart 8 digital/Retail copy you purchase... so esentially it is very good to get it now because you get an extra game for free.....

2) Getting it LATER: the only main advantage I see is that you will have more games to choose, price drop will be still possible, but at the moment you already can find good bargains online or in certain stores..... still, this is not enough, IMHO, to balance out the promotion on the free game with Mario kart.....

Hope I was helpful... however, when you'll get ur WiiU, I am sure you are gonna fall in love with it...

I forgot one thing, definitely go for the 32 gb one.... you will use all the space, cos the e-shop is full of indie game you are going to love.... and even the game you will get with the mario kart promotion will be a digital copy... so consider from 4 to 16 gb of space....

As others have said, the MK8 promo is just too good to pass up. Logic says that next year it may get cheaper but nothing is certain. You could get a good deal today or tomorrow instead of waiting for an official price drop that can take forever.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

To be honest I can see some people getting the smaller hardrive to save some money, 32GB isn't gonna be enough for a lot people and you will have to get an external hardrive anyway.

this is sure..... everything depends on the starting budget.... just that it seeemed to me that his parents are not so keen on spending too much money.... so, at least as a start, a 32 gb will allow you to store the extra game from mario kart and some e-shop titles, without any extra, immediate, expenditures...

Said that, I believe at certain point an HD is necessary, 8 or 32 gb don't matter

I forgot to mention that I'm from India and that I get my Nintendo stuff from Dubai so I doubt that I will be able to get the free games and all of that.

I really wish I don't make that same mistake for the Wii U like how I did for the Wii because otherwise, I'd end up getting so little instead of so much.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

The Wii U has never been cheaper...at least in my neighbourhood. The 8GB Basic w/ Skylanders + Nintendoland was on sale for less than $180 USD here in Australia last week. We could grab Mario Kart 8 on top with free game voucher and then have a Wii U with 4 games for less than the cost of a Premium.
Paying full price for a Premium doesn't seem worth it. It's going to fill up fast if you're downloading games that are 5-8GB each. And I think you've only got 25GB to actually use after system data. So what's that, you've got space for about 4 games and a few eShop downloads?
Cheaper to get an 8GB Basic + 500GB USB hard disk (and a 'USB Y cable' if your USB disk is not powered).

You should get it in november 2012.

Last year. You should definitely buy it already or you'll always have a backlog of great stuff.

Better to have too much than too little. (I have about 2/3's of Tropical Freeze left and then I am on to stuff I am not as bothered about).

And I only got it when Mario Kart 8 came out. (And I haven't been playing it constantly either maybe a bit more than normal).

Well, I bought my Wii U in April 2013 at $350. It dropped down to $300 in Sept. but I have no regrets. Between me and my brother, we put in 400 hours over the summer. I think the library is pretty good now, excellent if you are like me and didn't play a lot of the 3rd party games that were released in the first 6-10 months on other systems.

If you like the exclusives that are available, then get it now. That will more than keep you busy, plus there's some good indie games out and scheduled to come out between now and the next exclusive. FWIW, here's my collection:

Darksiders
Resident Evil
MK8
Tekkin
Injustice
Monster Hunter
Zombie U
Game & Wario
Mass Effect

With Smash coming up, I doubt there'll be a price drop in the near future, so I don't think you should be waiting for a potential price drop.

No one can tell you whether you should get it or not. Look at the games that are out now, and ask yourself "Am I going to buy these?" If not, why would you buy it? Don't buy a console for use in the future, buy a console for use now because it will always be cheaper in the future. If you are afraid it won't get the games you want, wait until it does to buy it. If it doesn't ever get them, get a different console. Since this is a Nintendo site a lot of your replies will either be from blind fanboys or trolls. I'm not sure if the Mario Kart 8 promotion is still going on, but if you want a game or two from the list it might be a good idea to buy it now though.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Good advice, pretty much sums up the thread.
