Good idea for a post. I'm like you in that I had some sort of relationship with Nintendo over the years, but it was tenuous at best. I loved my Gameboy. Had an SNES but wasn't all that much into it except for F Zero and Star Fox. Missed 64, GameCube and barely played GBA and got in on the Wii at the very end of its life cycle and it did next to nothing for me.

I got the Wii U b/c my step son's natural father was going to get him a "new Wii" for Christmas last year (2012). When I heard about this- given the timing, I just assumed it was going to be the Wii U. So, he comes home with a regular Wii and I was profoundly disappointed. I had researched it and thought it looked cool, but sat on the fence until April. I just thought the Gamepad looked really cool and pretty much bought it on impulse.

I was pretty blown away at first- I thought Nintendo Land was pretty awesome, even tho I was actually disappointed with the multi player (I know, this is why most like the game in the first place, but I didn't like that some games HAD to have two players b/c I play solo most of the time). Still I thought the racing game, ninja game, metroid, DK Crash, and zelda were all really cool and justified the game- even the purchase to an extent. I was slightly disappointed in NSMBU- I thought it would be more innovative, but Mario did look sharp in HD and the game grew on me over the summer.

Part of the reason I was so impressed with the gamepad from the ads that I saw was b/c of the Ninja game- while I liked the game a lot, many people complain about the game pad being bulky and heavy. For the most part I think it's pretty ergonomic and not all that heavy, but for the purposes of the ninja game, I did think it was bulky and difficult to aim. So, that was a little disappointing.

After a while these games got a little stale, but I noticed on Amazon how much cheaper I could get games. Picked up Madden for like $25, which wasn't bad at the time and Sonic and All Star Racing Transformed. Just to show you how out of the loop I was in regards to gaming, I didn't realize/notice the difference in some Wii/WiiU titles. They were in the same case at Walmart, so I just assumed there were more games, so this was disappointing at the time. Still, I was pretty happy with those two, then picked up Tekken and Injustice. Had a blast with those.

There was kind of a lull in mid summer- about this time last year. But I got on these forums and saw people discussing their 3ds's. So, I thought about it for about a month and a half and took the plunge and got one of those at the end of the summer. It would be an exaggeration for me to say that my Wii U collected dust, but my heart was definitely elsewhere when it came to games. W101 and Pikmin were quality games- I got them around release, but my new toy was the 3ds.

In early Dec., I picked up interest in my Wii U again- so much so that I decided to get a second one to take over to my GF's house- and I went ahead and got the Zelda bundle since I didn't have one and it had a pretty nice looking gamepad. I got Super Mario 3d World with it- oddly enough, this is what really "re-sparked" my interest in my Wii U. This was the type of Mario game I was expecting when I got NSMBU and really, really enjoyed it.

I played the Wii Sports Club demo- had no plans of buying it- but had a much better time with it than I expected and ended up taking the plunge there too. And of course this year we have DKTF and MK8, plus a ton of good indie games.

One other thing- I was reluctant to use the game pad as a browser at first. It was kind of awkward. Once I got used to it, I love using this to surf. I also love using it for Netflix.

Leading up to E3, while there were still a decent number of games I was looking forward to, I was a bit unsure about the future of the console as we all were. Honestly, if they didn't have any new games after MK8, I'd be upset, but given that between three people and the $650 I spent on hardware, we've logged over 1000 hours on the two consoles and will probably log another 1000 hours on the games I have plus the backlog, so, I think I've gotten a fair return on my investment. That said, Nintendo pretty much hit it out of the park with the games slated for the next year to year and a half.

Like you, I'm disappointed in the void in third party titles- but unlike you, it's far from a deal killer. I have no interest in shooters- I've got like five for the Wii U and that's plenty for me. I'd imagine in the next year, there MIGHT be a half doze titles I'm interested in that aren't coming out on the Wii U. Mainly it sucks b/c I do like Madden. It would be nice to have the option to play a few of the big titles coming out tho.

Other disappointments- Need to relax their rules on Mii Verse, especially for adults. Also need to do some cleaning up with their Nintendo IDs. Wish there was a way you could have cloud storage to at least save your progress on games for when you have two systems or play at a friend's house. Battery life is disappointing, but since I usually only play for 30 minutes to an hour, it's not a huge deal, except when maybe I'm surfing or watching a movie. But it's not a big enough deal for me to want to get the new battery, so I'll just deal with this until mine wears out. Loading times can be slow for some games, but for most of the ones I play a lot, it's not a big deal.

If I had to rate the system- I'd give it a 9.7. Overall, I've been extremely happy with it and have recommended it to my friends when ever I get the chance. If anybody out there is reading this and on the fence, now is an awesome time to own a Wii U. It won't disappoint. Don't listen to the negativity out there- it's got plenty of power and the graphics are pretty sharp. It's NOTICEABLY better than a Ps3 or 360. Don't listen to this crap about it being on par or barely better.

It could end up being my most played and my favourite console of all time. Its faults actually don't bother me that much but I know there are many. I got it on day one, easily got my money's worth of fun during its weaker early months and it does things I have never done on other consoles. With the full VC it would be my favourite because I would be busy for years before I even need new games. Off TV play is amazing to me because I share a TV with my housemates who don't want to watch me playing Zelda but will happily play MK8 on the gamepad while I watch Game of Thrones. It's amazing how poor the perception of it is. Most haters haven't touched one, most reviewers copy each other and form identical 'opinions' about games that I often don't believe they even played and most of the stuff from Sony and MS really doesn't impress me. I owned all 3 last gen but I think Wii U / PC will do me fine until GTAVI.

Agreed. I honestly do not get the hype from the PS4 and Xbox 1. There is barely anything on it except all the dudebro and a gallore of FPS games. I don't know if Sony and MS has forgotten about this, but FPS is not the only gaming genre.

@rockodoodle The lack of 3rd party titles is definitely not a deal breaker. The quality and magic of the first party games itself is more than enough to justify for the purchase. However it does sting when the Wii U gets treated like that. In the end of the day, I might just get the PS4 just to play the AAA 3rd party games. Which I wouldn't have to if the Wii U also have the AAA 3rd party games....So far, a PS4 purchase is almost guaranteed for me, it's just a matter of time.

I dunno guys, let's be a little realistic here. There is more available on the One and 4 then FPS "dudebro games" That would be like saying the Wii U only has platformers.

Not to be rude or anything, but can you name a few actual good games (that is actually out) that is not a FPS and dudebro games on those systems? The only one I can think of is Infamous second son for the PS4.

As for the Wii U, now when I think about it, we actually do have a lot of platformers LOL. But we still have Monster Hunter 3 U, W101, SM3DW and Mario Kart 8 though. Don't get me wronng, I like the PS4 and will be getting it in the future. However there is not enough games to convince me to drop down 500 bucks

Actually... most PS4 users I am friends with told me that they were disappointed by Infamous: Second Son. They told me it was lacking in several areas but it wasn't that bad.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Okay I'm REALLY not trying to be rude here. But 90% of those games I can get it on the PS3...? So what's the point? Just to get more pixels? But Valiant hearts I like.

I knew about Project Cafe, saw Wii U at E3 2011, saw Wii U at E3 2012, pre-ordered, bought it with games controllers, etc, played it. I could go into more detail, but it isn't really necessary.

My only point was that the PS4 and One have more games types of game then FPS's. I'm probably not getting either system though. The Wii U is the only modern console I need.

Maybe I should have said that was the short version?

1. Read about Project Cafe
2. Saw at E3 2011 & 2012
3. Pre-ordered
4. Bought the Deluxe Set at Best Buy on launch, w/ CoD, $150 worth of eShop(Mario, ZombiU, Nano Assualt, Mighty Switch Force), Pro controller, Turtle Beach N11(returned ASAP)
5. Got a new sound system for Linear PCM, new HDTV(which I was already in the process of doing, besides Wii U)
6. Upgraded all my Wii remotes to Wii remote+s and got 2 black nunchucks
7. Bought Sonic, Tekken, Monster Hunter, Injustice, RE: Revelations, Runner 2, Toki Tori, EDGE, VC games, etc. through out the year. Bought Pikmin 3.
8. Bought Ghosts, did Wii Fit U trial and got Fit Meter.
9. Got Mario Kart 8 and Wii Party U

That's pretty much it. I did have to send in my GamePad for them to fix the joystick, but I still haven't gotten it back. Their computers messed up, and I guess alot of people are having problems, so it's taking forever. I've spent so much damn money on this s***, then I bought an Xbox One with a few games.

EDIT: I have played all the games extensively(yay), and Wii U's internet browser is awesome.

The jostick would jump around randomly whenever I moved it up or down. I sent it to them almost a month and a half ago. It's pretty ridiculous, and I'm pretty ticked off that it's taking this long, but they said they'll do it for free, since I've had to wait so long. I sent it to them on June 1st, so ya. I missed out on all the Ubisoft discounts and summer sales, so far. I'm not really happy about it. I've called them like 4 times since I sent it in. The last official update they have, was from June 19th, which means they haven't even seen or touched my GamePad since then. They f***ed up REALLY BAD.

I've been gaming for many years, starting with pong in the late 70's, followed by intellivision and pitfall larry, as well as playing Zork on what must have been some of the earliest computers... bought NES and was in love... last ninty console I owned was N64, for some reason went onto genesis, playstation, dreamcast, followed by PS2, then xbox, then 360... didn't even know about WiiU until around thanksgiving last year, when I saw ads about SM3DW, it reminded me of Mario64 and I decided I had to get it, even after researching it online and discovering all the "doom and gloom" surrounding it.. really glad I did, been enjoying it immensely... been buying games off ebay new for cheap, several I haven't even played yet, have more games than I can even get to, between the amazing games like DKC:TF , SM3DW , MK8, ( I could go on ) and some great eshop games there's simply a boatload of options to play... I would suggest anyone vaguely interested should go ahead and get one... oh and lastly anyone who enjoys a good golf game Wii sports club golf is by far the best golf game I have ever played, easy to understand yet takes alot of practice to execute properly, and very satisfying when you do..

I really didn't like the Wii at all. It had some great games, but I always saw it as a bit more of a toy instead of a gaming system, so I was a little weary about jumping on another Nintendo system.

I can't remember when I first heard about the Wii U. I was in my grade 12 year of high school, and I was really more involved in my studies and social life than gaming. I kind of knew about it, but I wasn't completely informed. I had my PS3 and I thought I was set console-wise for a another few years. So it launched in late 2012, and I didn't see anything on it that looked too incredibly appealing to me. So some time went by and I'd say it was maybe March 2013 that I started looking at the Wii U a little more. I started reading up on the Nintendo Directs and keeping up more with the industry. When I found out about Wind Waker HD, I was sold. That was my favourite Zelda, so I had to get it.... but I had to get a Wii U.

I asked for it for my birthday last year, but my mom didn't understand what it was. She thought the gamepad was an overpriced add-on for the Wii. So she just got me NSMBU without the system.... lol
So about a week after that, Walmart and EB Games had the basic Wii U sets on sale for like $200 or $250. I jumped at the chance and go one along with a decent USB and Pikmin 3. So I've had my Wii U for almost a year now.

I find myself dividing my time between the Wii U and PS3, so I play them for about equal amounts of time now. I also discovered Netflix on Wii U, and I became addicted to that too.

My feelings exactly- again, if anybody is reading this and thinking about getting one, jump on it. As I mentioned in another post, Wii Sports Club didn't seem appealing to me at all until I got the free demo for a weekend and I love it, not to mention the Nintendo titles that are already out.
