Topic: What would you like to see in a third Wii U update?

I think the Wii U is finally starting to pick up and I'm very glad that Nintendo got the Spring and Fall updates out but IMO there's still a few things missing.

  • SYSTEM TRANSFER - It'll probably still be a while before we see the Wii U/3DS account unification, so they should allow us to transfer our Wii U content from system to system the same way we transfer 3DS stuff until then.
  • JOIN GAME - 3DS got this in late 2011 but the Wii U still doesn't have it, it will be very convenient for Mario Kart 8.
  • PHOTO AND SOUND APP - Wii, DSi, and 3DS all had this since their launches but the Wii U still doesn't have this.
  • WII U REVIVAL WII CHANNELS - Wii U versions of Everyone Votes, Check Mii Out, and Today and Tomorrow Channel rolled up into one app.
  • MIIVERSE RE-ORGANIZATION - The Wii U library is really starting to pick up so they need to make Miiverse Community menu more organizable by allowing you customize the order you want the communities to be in so you don't have to scroll a long ways to get to the games released at launch. They also need to allow you to read personal messages when browsing Miiverse on a device other than the Wii U.

The Warawara plaza should be better, but I've ranted on that before.

1. unified account system/ ability to access our accounts on our pc's (like XBL and PSN) and not have it tied to our systems anymore.
2. the ability to pre-order games on the eshop so they automatically download the day they release
3. pro controller support for Wii Mode (eventhough the mayflash gamecube adaptor works perfectly for me i'd still like to see pro controller support here)
4. the entire Wii VC library on the Wii U, sounds like a stretch I know but lets face it they should have been their from day one and Nintendo should be working on "new" VC releases rather than re-releasing the old Wii ones...
5. and finally this is something I personally want, the ability to have your save data on the system while you run downloaded games from a usb device, yes games and saved data are packed to one file atm... Sure right now we can copy data to a separate usb device as a back up (as long as they are both fomatted by your Wii U) but lets say you only have one, then it defects, there goes your saved data so now when you re-download the game you have to start all over, and with big games like AC4 this could prove frustrating so it needs to be fixed.

edit: and a 6th option: System transfers, because IF Nintendo ever releases a 60GB or higher Wii U, and this will only happen when sales go up (even though they have been since the price drop here in the US and recently Japan) dramatically I'd personally buy another Wii U for the sake of memory alone and the Wii U desperatly -an understatement- needs a transfer system!

unified Account sys..... oh nvm everyone else has probably said...'

Folders!
Say who's online instead of saying a # of ppl online and checking on a separate menu who's online.
And.... the ability to change the background (or at the very least color change) in the main menu would be nice.....

They anti-alias the NES games? That ain't right.

Personally the only thing I REALLY want is the ability to transfer my Nintendo Network ID from my roommates Wii U to my own recently purchased Wii U. I'm literally waiting offline for this option to appear.

The option to store retail software on an SD Card (like on the 3DS) would also be great, since it would allow my 8GB Wii U to become a 32 or 64GB Wii U without having to hook up an external hard-drive. Not sure why they currently don't allow this, since the SD Card slot is pretty useless with the current functionality.

3. I don't think this will ever happen considering it's a legacy mode.
4. You do realize this will result in no releases in a while?
5. Save data is separate for digital games.

nope, I am in my data management right now and on my AC4 file my save data is in the same file (clicks on assassins creed 4 file and sees... the game 12GB, save data 2MB, shared save data 4MB, and the updata data 1GB) and my save files cannot be copied to the system while the game file itself stays on my usb device...

and for #4 really? i'd think it'd push them to put out titles we didn't get originally on the wii vc... because at this rate the only vc title that will ever be on my wii u menu for a few years of half the generation will be earthbound, and i'm not keen to re-downloading old vc purchases when I can just access Wii mode and play them.. and #3, that makes the mayflash gamecube adaptor a good investment then! and yes it does work, i've experienced no input lag with a wavebird btw.

If I may ask, why not just buy an external harddrive? Wii U supports up to 2TB, which costs around $100. Much cheaper than a new Wii U, and much, MUCH more storage space.

I second the ability to transfer content between systems. That's something they really messed-up with the Wii. Every time there's some fancy new case or system spec upgrade (more internal storage, for example) you have an opportunity to sell another machine to an existing system owner, so why not take advantage of that desire some people have to get the latest edition?

A way to launch Wii content without going into Wii mode. If nothing else I'd like to be able to launch disc software this way - just background the emulation or whatever - doesn't seem like that should be so difficult. I'd expect this to happen with disc software at a minimum, but at least they have Wii mode launch from the disc channel as well when you load a Wii disc. And yes, I know you can boot in Wii mode, but that's also pretty clunky and could be better (how about a prompt when it detects a Wii game disc rather than a narrow window in the system boot and holding a remote button?)

Actually I just thought of something else. Kill Wii Mode, allow the Wii U OS to play Wii games natively and render them at 1080p.

That would be amazing, if the hardware can handle it.

I think Nintendo should try to do a Playstation Plus type thing once they get their Virtual Console library built up. Offer people free access to all of the available titles in exchange for a yearly fee, and then gradually add other benefits like exclusive discounts on digital titles, or cloud storage for save game backups. I'm sure that would sell a lot of people on the Wii U.

Not now, but If I buy another Wii U it would be great to be able to transfer all of your data to the new console.

All I can think of right now is the ability to use the gamepads buttons as a classic controller in Wii mode. I know some people are saying it's not possible, but it was clearly possible for them to add gamepad screen functionality, so why not the buttons? I assume all they'd have to do is update the Wii OS (which is what they did the be able to use the screen in the first place). It just makes very little sense to use a controller while looking at the gamepad when the gamepad has buttons on it.

I'd like to see:

  • the option to join the game my friends are playing
  • the ability to USE the actual mic on the gamepad for voice chat!
  • a unified voice chat feature
  • gamepad support for Wii games
  • a place in Miiverse where you can post on topics not related to certain games, like a "general area" where you can post whatever.
  • connectivity to Facebook to see which friends have a Wii U as well as the ability to post about progress in a game.

Did you select "Save data" on the Data Management?

Except they would have to deal with a licensing nightmare to get them on Wii U. Keep in mind that licenses and rights (for third party games) are very strange. Also, I don't think it's a matter of simply transferring the titles from one shop to the other by the push of a button. And lastly, keep in mind that this is the majority of the VC in question. What else would they add after this and how would they please fans with constant releases? Gamecube and Dreamcast only have so many games on them.

I don't think that's possible. Wii Mode seems to be a legacy mode similar to "Gamecube mode" on the Wii.

Even if Nintendo could kill Wii Mode I don't think they would. It made sense with the 3DS to have DSiware able to play from the homescreen and than going into wii mode. Nintendo has nothing to gain from segmenting the Wii/Wii U environments. Its there to not only emulate games but giving you more incentive to pay t get your VC games out of the Wii ghetto.

Well DSi didn't have sections like VC, Wiiware and a Disc channel. Plus I don't know if the Wii U OS accesses the SD card at all. Second, even if they integrate it, it still has to switch over to Wii mode anyway. 3DS does the same thing in "DS mode"

Well they can read from SD cards on the Wii U and they can access data from the Wii. We know the first is true because the Animal Crossing Plaza channel thing allows you to move pictures from Animal Crossing New Leaf to the Wii U via SD Card. We know the second is true because the Wii U eShop knows what your purchases are, you can copy over your Miis and Wii Fit U allows you to copy over your Wii save data.

However there's a difference between reading it and actually running it outside of the compatibility mode. I really don't see them putting that much of an effort into something that in reality is a niche feature. It plays Wii games, it didn't need to do anymore. The fact that they have done more is a welcome surprise as it is.

As for pushing the Wii U VC to the point that it has the Wii VC library now, I don't see how that would be a problem. The vast majority of the content everyone wants doesn't have any real licencing restrictions. It's like going to a store full of music, a consistent slow stream of new albums means nothing if there isn't a library of content already there. You go in and browse for stuff you like. If there's nothing you like then you'll walk out and probably never bother with it again.
