Topic: What would the female answer to "Call of Duty" be?

On the topic of gender equality in video games, I wonder what kind of game would be the answer to the blockbuster bro-fest. First of all, I'm a man, who grew up in the 80s. It is common knowledge that games then were made primarily for teenage boys during the NES console boom, and I do think that's the reason many females my age don't get into video games as much as men do. I know there are female gamers, but it's hard to imagine a blockbuster game primarily aimed at females, ignoring/marginalizing the male market, on the same scale as games like Battlefield and such.

Games do not belong to any gender, it's for everyone and anyone to play them.
The only reason girls keep there gaming a secret is because most guys gamers are creeps.

You could make the argument that games like Animal Crossing & Tomodachi Life are for girls but I see them more as uni-sex games myself. Otheriwse..

Splatoon seems gender friendly.

LOL, because guys aren't used to it. Also, I don't know if you're a female or not, but if you have a sexy anime girl as your avatar and a name like "Bad Kitty", you're going to attract some pervs.

TBH I'm a guy and I don't like on-line blockbuster games like COD & Battlefield because of the whole bro rubbish with people shouting insults, my sister on the other hand likes to have sex with prozzies and then kill them in GTA.

Girls may play them, but they're heavily designed and marketed to dudebros. I think that's what OP is getting at. Developers and publishers have been pushing their games on a male audience for generations and as a result, there really is no comparable AAA franchise primarily targeted at women.

There's always some statistic saying that gamers are skewing older and skewing female, but sales just don't seem to back up those statistics. The most popular and successful games are still stuff like CoD and GTA, stuff marketed at young men.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

As far as I'm concerned, Call of Duty is a girl game. I know more girls playing it than guys.

EDIT: But really, I don't have any idea. I'm a girl and I'm satisfied with the games I've picked up over the years. My best friend is nuts about Soul Calibur and she doesn't seem like the type to be into gaming.

Yes, thanks for phrasing it better. It's pretty entrenched in that way, from my experience at least.

I don't know but judging purely empirically from the number of women I see wearing Mass Effect t-shirts at geek culture cons, I would say that's a game disproportionately popular among female gamers

Are you saying because her name is Badkitty, she will attract pervs?
If I change my name to BadLordJumpMad, will I also attract pervs? Since we're on the topic of "gender equality".
Anyway, videogames are not marketed to any gender, just mostly children like you.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Ow, oh... my ego... it's been bruised... (not to mention the irony due to my avatar, Inigo lol)

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

I am bad! I play whatever game I want to play, and i'm a boy of the human race (supposedly). I have three sisters, and they play whatever they want to play, though 2 of them play those "Callz of a doodiez" like games as much as I do.

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!

If this is a topic on gender equality and here you are making petty insults about my name? Did a girl beat you in a videogame? It's okay everyone loses to me~

Call of Duty is the female answer to Call of Duty. It is common knowkedge that women soldiers fight for their country on a regular basis. This might be one of the few times I would seriously push having females in a game, as I take military topics very seriously.

There are a lot of girl gamers, though I think that the reason that some of them keep it a secret is to keep from

A. Sexist insults
B. Being called a fake girl gamer, which seems to be a stereotype. (This could be considered the same as sexist insults though, I'm just specifying it since it's the most common)

So, yeah.

I'll post my friend code once I have a better team ready for Pokemon X, for battling.

There are women playing those kinds of games in spite of not being the target market. Regarding your latter question there are games that aren't marketed specifically at people loaded with testosterone, but I suspect you'll mainly find them on the PC or mobile platforms which aren't dominated by big publishers that mirror cinema in largely ignoring half the population.

As to what a blockbuster female-targeted game might look like I tend to find that story- and character-driven titles are more popular amongst the women I know. Games less concerned with putting bullets in people's heads than exploring a mystery or telling an interesting/funny story. Both my ex-wife and current partner like adventure games best because they-re less tests of skill than focused on exploration and narrative.

My ten year-old daughter likes Pokemon and Animal Crossing and really wants Tomodachi Life for 3DS, but also puts in time on the free copy of Super Mario DX I got as a promotional download. On Wii U she's currently obsessed with Mario Kart, but also a big fan of Lego City, Game & Wario, Wii Party U and Art Academy - all of which are effectively gender neutral in my book (I would like to have seen a female lead option for Lego City or at least unlockable female characters that weren't just re-skins).

I really don't think it's necessary to have boys games and girls games: just stop making so many story-driven games that almost exclusively feature protagonists that are either male or shallow female characters which are fetish material for males. Nintendo does really well by making games which are more like toys that can appeal to anyone so I'm really happy with the Wii U - being able to share gaming with my daughter is very rewarding!
