As a huge fan of nintendo and their consoles, I've been a bit down over the state of the Wii U.

But what will it take to make them relevant and down with cool kids ? the only answer I have is more advertising and a strong focus on 1st and 2nd party support. I don't think they should start paying for exclusive dlc or try to bribe 3rd parties, if they could just get some of that get N or get out attitude back and sort out their online features to accomadate the modern gamer I think the tide might slowly start to turn.

I don't even think graphics are the issue, they just need to sort out their image. But despite all their problems december still proved to be a good month for Wii U.

We have seen what a bit of hype can do, just look a PS4/X1

Advertising is the big thing they need to do something with. The unawareness of the more casual players seems to be their biggest problem.

And it also seems like a recurring theme that people don't expect much of the console, but still buy it, and when they actually got the thing plugged in with the gamepad in their hands, they're very pleasantly surprised.

But then again, I have no idea how they're going to make people understand that without actually buying one.

More games will solve their problems, but if they haven't already lined that up then the Wii U really IS doomed, because it takes about 4 years to make a quality title. By then we may be on to the next big thing...

To be fair though I was pretty happy game wise with the wii u in 2013, the only notable game I feel the wii u missied was bioshock infinite. We had W101, pikmin 3, wind waker HD, batman arkham origins, splinter cell, loads of games

lego city undercover, deus ex directors cut, I was happy anyway. PS4 seem happy to replay killzone 10 times over, so how does the Wii U have no games ?

I agree with what the dude above said about trying out the gamepad youself, I own arkham origins on both ps3 and wii u, and the wii u version is way more fun and it looks a lot better to.

Nintendo needs to fix its marketing first ,and for most. I worked in electronics sales when the Wii U first came out ,and got back into it this year ,and the issue was the same over the course of a year. No one knows what it is except the really dedicated gamers.

As far as needing more games i would say its more specific to needing more third party franchises on Wii U. Over the past year there was a lot of reboots for different series as well as games that were separated enough from their earlier titles such as Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, and DmC. It's games like these that would of been perfect for Wii U as you wouldn't have needed to play the older titles to understand what was going on.

I agree with I-AM-REGGIE as i have games on ps3 ,and wii u where i enjoy the Wii U versions because what they add ,or because of the fact its not usually something you find a nintendo console so it feels more special on Wii U than it does on PS3.

Current Switch Games: Super Mario Odyssey, Legend of Zelda BoTW, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Resident Evil Revelations Collection, Doom, Skyrim, Rogue Trooper, Volgarr the Viking, Blaster Master Zero, Elliot Quest, and Rive

More games(1st and 3rd party, software droughts are SEVERELY hurting sales)
Embrace online multiplayer more with 1st party games
Better Advertising
Stop region locking hardware
Start releasing games gamers have been begging for(Star Fox, F-Zero, etc)
Actually have an E3 stage presentation to show off Wii U games

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

There are a number of things that would have varying degrees of success.

Get people to actually use the Wii U. This would probably be the best thing, as once you use the gamepad, you really start to see why the Wii U is actually a good machine, because without it, it doesn't look that special. Getting someone to play games with off-TV play and having a multiplayer session of Rayman Legends would convince a lot of people. This is also pretty much the hardest thing for Nintendo to do. It's not like you can walk into people's homes and shove a Wii U in their face. Now that I think about it, I think the Vita is in the same kind of case.

Drastically improve your online infrastructure. It doesn't matter if COD is on your console if it's nearly impossible to organize games with your friends. If your online isn't up to snuff with the competition, a huge amount of people will not buy your system since none of their friends play on your system since your online setup doesn't even have a proper chat or messaging system. Online is only becoming more important in this day and age. With 3rd party games integrating online more and more in their games, as well as in single player (look at Need for Speed or Watch Dogs), it's becoming increasingly paramount to keep up.

Get cozy with 3rd parties, and maybe take a unique approach to them. Here's an idea: instead of getting 3rd parties to put games that won't sell on your system (since the audience just won't be there. They're either sticking with their 360/PS3 or will move to the One/PS4) how about getting 3rd parties to make lower budget games exclusive to your system that utilize its strengths in unique ways. In essence, help fund the Red Steel 2s, Zack and Wikis, etc. of this generation. Without them, it's literally just Nintendo games, considering all the indie stuff still isn't here and is also on or going on other platforms. It keeps the Wii U relevant without making it inherently inferior.

Games could be very good or very bad, or any other combination. If time by a time, they create different promotions people could be tempted to buy games even out if they release window (aka old games)

More games is never a bad thing.

They would probably need to capitalize on mistakes that their competitors make, or flat out weaknesses. Look at them, not me.
Microsofts kinect looks like an easy target because of the NSA, but marginalizing kinect tech itself would also out nintendos wiimote.
Playstation looks untouchable, to be frank.
The Wii U Gamepad, then, will be the center of what comes next. If Nintendo can showcase the real potential of the Gamepad, they've got a winner that the competition will copy for years to come. That is what Nintendo needs (along with Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros 4)
Honestly I don't foresee nintendo outselling the n64 this time, though they've got a good shot at least outselling gamecube
