So I was reading this article on Gamespot and well I thought they made some good points, and some of their ideas sounded pretty stupid, but it got me thinking "what do I think the Wii U needs in order to be successful?"
Well I think the Wii U needs to also remember the casual gamer, I know analysts and some people think the casual gamer will never buy another console but I think they're wrong. I think that because the casual gamer liked the Wii they will be expecting a similar or even a better experience on the Wii. They release Apple products like crazy and it doesn't stop people from buying them.
There's my take on the situation, so what do you think the Wii U needs in order to be successful?
Honestly Nintendo just needs to remember that the Wii U is the Wii U and dont try to be like Sony or MS. Stick with a video game system and not a it will do everything system. Also a bit more mature titles like GTA wouldn't hurt either that way you can reach all audiences.

I agree with your statement in that they cannot just forget about the casual gamer. Nintendo has shown just how many people out there are willing to buy a gaming console and I believe it would be a mistake for Nintendo to turn a blind eye to them.
That said, I do wish to see more new types of games. I do love my Mario, but I really want to see a fun game to play that I never saw coming! I think these new types of games as well as a 2D side-scrolling Mario game and an overhead Zelda for the seasoned fans of the series would be things Nintendo could do release to make Wii U a success!
Apple products are actually useful and go for more than the one market. Biggest reason why the wii u would fail Imo is that its only targeting gaming when the larger market place is focused kncan all in one box and innovating the television space.

I agree with you and well from the looks of what we've seen so far and if the rumours are true it looks like the Wii U will be able to do more than just gaming and if Nintendo wants to do something like that they also need to remember that they will now be competing with Apple.

Apple hasn't really had that much success in the box market. The biggest leader most would say is Microsoft or maybe Roku. Thought apple is rumored to show off the new apple Tv at wwdc next week.

Creative use of the new gamepad that adds something new to gameplay (should apply to at least a handful of games)
Multimedia capabilities
Not go exclusively online too fast if Nintendo evolved too rapidly
Reasonable price
I want to say reviving old franchises, but I can't think of one that has almost as much appeal as Mario. And while better specs is good, they can't make it ridiculously expensive like the PS3.

Article is pretty average. The PS2/Dreamcast fable is a well known one but I don't need my console do media services because my TV can do that by itself and I don't need it to be able to play videos from disks because I already have a Blu-Ray player. The Wii U controller is a "traditional" controller with a screen so I don't understand why people would complain about the lack of a solution for "traditional gaming". To top it off the idea of the controller being able to be "carried around wherever you go" proves that the writer has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
There only two points worth mentioning are the only two things which I think the Wii U needs to do to be successful. It needs good first party games and it needs good third party support. That's it, simple as that.
Third party support.
The "casuals" that were crazy for the Wii in 2006 are now playing Angry Birds on their iPhones. Before the Wii, the "casuals" were playing those Pac-Man plug 'n play joysticks.

Successful in my opinion is just having good games. I'd say 3 Mario games, at least 1 Zelda, 1 Metroid and a Kid Icarus and it will be successful in my opinion.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
A Mario game of its own as in not just a sequel to NSMB or Galaxy for example would probably help a lot, not that the sequels wouldn't sell by the ton mind you.
Third Party support. Nintendo will take more time to develop games for Wii u (taking in consideration it's hardware capability) so 3rd party support will be crucial.
Seeing all the time they "waste" developing their biggest franchises, I don't think we will see many Nintendo 1st party games being released in one year. Of course, unless they start doing some Zelda game that can be finished in 7 hours...
Trophies/ Achievements will be essential to create one community, and to invite some Ps3/360 owners that are already attracted by this system.
Demos! And i mean as many as it can get.
Especially for these 3rd party games the Wii didn't get / only had bad versions of. But maybe it would even convince more people to buy Mario games, you never know.

I would ask the same, but for Nintendo games, preferably. What are they afraid of?

You may not need or want it but that is where the market is going. All in One boxes that do your gable and other apps and services as well as play games
Which is precisely my point. Most things are all in one boxes already so why would you need another one? Buy even a low range TV or Blu-Ray player these days for what is pennies in comparison to the cost of gaming and it'll do catch-up TV services, movie rental services, HDD playback, facebook, twitter, youtube, DLNA, some primitive web surfing and possibly even Skype. At this stage I would suspect that most people have the tech in their house already to do most these things on their TV even if they don't actively use it.
So I don't think the Wii U needs to do something cool with media to be successful in the same way that I wouldn't turn my nose up at a PVR that didn't have youtube support. I don't think many if any are going to complain if it does but I don't think a shopper is going to be standing in the games section with a pile of cash thinking "well the Wii U does have Zelda but the 360 does online video really well"

Yeah, this is what I am thinking. Why do I need anotherall-in-one box but this time with Nintendo's name on it?
Other than playing good 1st party Nintendo games along with the ability to play online with Nintendolifer's I could have a Tanooki Tail about other apps and services.
