Super Mario World on the SNES circa 1998. It was not my game (or console) but i have bought my own copy a few years later. And that was the start of a large collection of games and consoles

Super Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country were the first two I remember playing.

Duck Hunt.

Me too. At some electronics store. I immediately wanted a NES because the graphics were amazing and the concept of a light gun on your television seemed mind blowing to me. The Sega system looked a little cooler to me as far as the look of the console and they seemed mostly similar but Duck hunt sold me on Nintendo.

Second game was Gyromite since it came with my console. I almost always only played it with ROB.

I was later jealous people were getting Super Mario Bros. included with their inferior action set bundles.

I was also kind of annoyed ROB was basically dropped after seeming like an integral part of the system when I bought and the lack of light gun games. This was less of a big deal than I felt it was because I didn't even have money to buy much games and I was skipping light gun games and never bought the second ROB game that I think had you making stacks. But I did feel burned for splurging on the premium bundle when I was making 4 cents per newspaper that I delivered.

The first game I bought for my NES I think was Ikari Warriors. It was very inferior to the arcade version. The great thing about Super Mario Bros. was there was an arcade version that was the same as the NES. My first Christmas with the thing I got Castlevania and Mike Tysons punchout. Later my best friends got a NES too after they were jealous of mine and they ended up getting way more games than me so I played a ton of NES.

We mostly bought games based on cover art back then but when renting at the video store I took a chance on a game that looked like ASS because there wasn't much and it turned out to be a gem called Megaman. I also remember being pissed Ninja Gaiden wasn't like the arcarde game initially when I bought it but it became one of my all time favorites.

I remember my parents getting me the NES bundle that had the NES console, two controllers, the gun controller, and the SMB/ Duck Hunt game cartridge.

Let's just say that my passion for playing games was too much. I had it for about less than two years. My parents then gave away my NES and bunch of games to some relatives.

SMB on NES (the SMB/Duck Hunt cartridge). I think we still have it.

SMW on SNES was the first I beat, though.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Game & Watch Donkey Kong at my friend's house. First one I owned would have been SMB bundled with my NES.

That Super Mario Bros. game in the arcade was called Vs. Super Mario Bros and was actually released a year after the NES version of SMB. It was also not identical to the home console and was much more difficult. Nintendo had several of their home consoles made into arcade cabinets (VS. Excitebike and VS. Ice Climbers were two others that come to my mind).

And yes, I was also initially very disappointed that the NES Ninja Gaiden wasn't like the arcade version. (Double Dragon for NES also comes to mind in this regard....). Thankfully, Ninja Gaiden, both NES and Arcade versions, are on the Wii Virtual Console.

Me, too. The two-screen Donkey Kong. The first nintendo game I actually owned was Metroid Fusion wich was the reason I purchased the Gameboy Advance SP.

I didn't know the difference but I do think I remember seeing excite bike in arcades too. The arcade version might have been the first SMB I played since it didn't come with my bundle. I played it everywhere else though because everyone had that game. And if you are just looking up internet info remeber the NES had a soft launch in NA. It wasn't properly launched until 86 and it wasn't expected to be a hit and it wasn't really big until 87

And yeah I got both versions of Ninja gaiden on VC....the NES version is by far the better game

Super Mario Advanced. I never had a GBA, but I snatched my brother's every once and a while. That soundtrack will forever be imprinted in my head.
I also wasn't good at the game. I usually picked Toad, cause he just seemed cool. Mario's now my favorite though, because Mario.
When I look back at the game I still question why they have Birdo an English voice

Oh yeah, I guess I played Donkey Kong in the arcade and I think on Atarti 2600 before I ever played Duck Hunt

Pokémon Blue in the late 90s, that game combined with the first season of the anime got me into Nintendo consoles. It's a shame I didn't find out about LoZ until the Wii though (got NES Zelda because I had 500 spare Wii points I didn't know what to use for).
