Fire hopping does jack sh*t, I beat people all the time without using it even though I've had it down pat since like a week after it was discovered. I'll use it once in a blue moon when my hands are bored but seriously people have blown it so far out of proportion, it is nowhere as effective as snaking not even close.

Bulls**t, Jazzer. Bulls**t.
I lost 3 perfect races because of Fire Hopping, the small boost is what does it in the end.
I can't rely on anything because the item rolls hate my guts, but that technique makes it that much worse for me.

The items are given out much fairer in mario kart 8 compared to wii. I've been in 3rd a been given blue shells, within the top 5 I've had stars, crazy 8's, golden mushrooms, triple mushrooms. On mario kart wii I would have never got the better items, except the rare occasions of triple mushrooms.
Besides, the whole idea of keeping your top positions in mario kart is to protect yourself with keeping a shell or banana trailing behind your vehicle.

Items are rubber banded so the best items go to players in the back (less experienced players) while the person in first tends to get the worst items. So a player can be legitimately better and in first the entire race, and then a less experienced player near the back of the gets a blue shell and BAM!!! The skilled player loses his lead right at the end of the race. Yes, horns can block it, but it's perfectly normal to go the entire race without getting one. Many skilled players hate the rubber banding because it favors the less skilled players... But many skilled players also hate items in Smash Bros due to the same luck factor. Personally, I'm not bothered by any of it, yes I'm annoyed when I'm clearly better than someone and I get item screwed at the last second, so what I do is... Play another race. I see no reason to care, it's a game and who needs a perfect win record? If losing a game is that upsetting... Well, I just think who will want to play if they can't ever win a single match? I like that games like these give everyone a chance.

IMO, it's much easier to win tight races online if you stay 2nd or 3rd until the second half of the last track. Collect a good attack or boost in the meantime, fire the ones you don't want backwards. Then time your final attack.

I've led (and won) more races from beginning to end without getting hit by a blue shell than in any recent Mario Kart game. It's a much better item distribution system then in other versions.

I race tournaments regularly with a small bunch of people (like 12-18) with some like 6 being seriously good at the game, me and this other guy who I'm normally going against for 1st we have no problem beating fire hoppers I have no problem online beating fire hoppers. I have found that the people who complain about fire hoppers are mostly just average players who need a excuse. Even when fire hopping is executed perfectly it only saves 1 to 2 seconds in a race maybe 3 if lucky and that is a god like race we are talking about (i.e. time trials where it is actually useful), a single item hit takes all the time saved plus extra trust me this isn't anything like snaking which gained me like a 90 something% win rate on MKDS at my school when I was younger.

Besides, what kind of items do you expect to get when you are in first position?! Do you want stars, lightnings or bullet bills, so your 1.5 sec advantage on the guy in second place becomes 10 sec?! That would be really balanced, wouldn't it? Do you want red shells to throw at the emptiness in front of you?! Considering the first place is usually decided within the first 30 seconds of the race, the blue shell is the only way to balance things, otherwise a very skilled player will never lose his first place and you might as well end the race after the first lap.

just imagine how many people would complain for unbalanceness if the system was different.

I just want to point out that nobody here could balance the items as well as they have in MK8, and if you think you could do better you're delusional.

And to those complaining about losing races to fire hopping, you can only blame yourself. You do realize that it takes skill to do this correctly every time during a live race, right? And that if you mess up and hit a wall or something, you fall even further behind? Then if you're so skilled, just do it. Shouldn't be that hard if you're as good as you think you are. Stop complaining that others are beating you because they're better at the game.
And no, I will not take the argument that it wasn't included in the game so its cheating. That's like saying holding a streamline in swimming isn't included in the sport and is cheating, when in reality it is a technique which was developed in order to move as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I didn't say that I win when nobody fire hops, I said that I've lost 3 at last second because of a fire hop.
I have no problem beating anybody that uses a technique and I don't lose a bunch of races like some whiners.

What is fire hopping?

Does anybody here watch Gamexplain? They basicaly summed up the item distribution: If you're any where behind first place it is like a war zone, being constantly hit with red shells and what not. But in first not only do you get all of the coins before every one else but there is a small chance of you getting hit by anything that is not a blue shell. So the winner is a lot of times decided towards the begging. (Lol, yet this still might be my favorite Mario Kart ever just because of how awesomely designed the tracks are. And dlc that's actually worth it? 16 tracks which is like half a game for 12 bucks? Heck yeah)

I don't fire hop and I've never needed to. I just drift as much as possible and stay as close to the edge of the inside of the track whenever I can. Even if there's a boost on the outside of the track turn, stay on the inside. It will help a lot. Collect Coins as much as possible and use your items sparingly; when you're in 1st, keep your items for defense only and save your Super Horns. That should all help.

I also don't use heavy characters, I make handling my top priority. That helps with drifting, and, if you're perceptive enough, your ability to dodge Green Shells or heavier characters that can knock you aside--I typically check behind me briefly with the rear-view mirror whenever there's a straight road ahead of me.

still don't get the "unbalanced items" point - care to explain without me going through 198 pages in the official thread?!
Whenever I play online I still see good players winning and bad players losing - and whatever happens to you happens to any other player, so how is it unbalanced?

In one race, I was in 3rd place, and I got nothing but triple mushrooms and stars. In another race I was in 11th place, and I was getting nothing but single mushrooms and blue shells. That is clearly wrong.

@Prof_Clayton People complain because they can't win. Mario Kart 8 is a perfectly balanced game, unlike Mario Kart Wii.

No, Mario Kart Wii is more balanced, because people in the lower spots actually got helpful items, and people in front just got green shells and bananas.

Giving the guy in last place a Bullet Bill/Lightning Bolt/Blue Shell every time and allowing him to jump ahead 4-5 (or more!) spots on the final half lap does not mean the game is "balanced". That is as unbalanced as it can get!

Neither are balanced by design that is why they are not good online games.

Have you ever played Mario Kart? That's the point of the items, to keep everyone close together so it's a surprise to see who wins. In MK8 the people in the front get speed boosts, while the people in the back get useless items, meaning the race is no longer fun because it's plain obvious who's gonna win and lose.

...but this is exactly the opposite of what people are complaining about - everybody's saying that when you are first place you are completely vulnerable to any kind of attack and you get no items to defend yourself.

Let me sum up people's wishes: when you are first, you want strong items to defend your position so nobody can pass you. When you're last, you want strong items to improve your position so you can pass everybody else.
Bottom line: you want to win every bloody time, and if you don't then the game is unbalanced.
