Topic: What the heck happened? (Mario Kart 8)

Okay, so basically I've been playing Mario Kart 8 since it released and there is this one guy I always play against. The entire time I've been beating him by using all of the tips and stuff (Drift when every time you get the chance, use a good kart combo with a heavy character, collect all ten coins, etc.). Just out of no where, starting on Tuesday, I've lost nearly every race. And it's really been pissing me off because I'm doing all of the same stuff I've been doing, except now I'm getting pelted by a red shell (We only play 1 vs. 2 no computer), falling into last place, and then getting ABSOLUTELY no helpful items what so ever. Has this happened to any one else or do you have any tips or know what happened?

And can you go a little faster?!

He could be fire hopping. It's the totally broken tactic that everyone uses online. I wish Nintendo would get rid of it, but good luck with that...

It is only broken in that you cannot do it with inside drift vehicles. It should either be a thing you can do or not.

The item balance is more annoying. What is so bad about a legitimate good win.

Mario Party Kart would be a more suitable name.

Fire hopping does jack sh*t, I beat people all the time without using it even though I've had it down pat since like a week after it was discovered. I'll use it once in a blue moon when my hands are bored but seriously people have blown it so far out of proportion, it is nowhere as effective as snaking not even close.

So many choads on here were crying months ago saying 'fire hopping' signaled the end of MK8 online when in reality many of us knew it would have no affect on online play. It helps during time trials, but that's it.

still don't get the "unbalanced items" point - care to explain without me going through 198 pages in the official thread?!
Whenever I play online I still see good players winning and bad players losing - and whatever happens to you happens to any other player, so how is it unbalanced?

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

It's called 'being unlucky', that's it.

Sometimes I go five races and win them or finish in top 3 each time, then in my next 5 I only finish higher than 4th place once. You win some, you lose some, that's all.

Items are rubber banded so the best items go to players in the back (less experienced players) while the person in first tends to get the worst items. So a player can be legitimately better and in first the entire race, and then a less experienced player near the back of the gets a blue shell and BAM!!! The skilled player loses his lead right at the end of the race. Yes, horns can block it, but it's perfectly normal to go the entire race without getting one. Many skilled players hate the rubber banding because it favors the less skilled players... But many skilled players also hate items in Smash Bros due to the same luck factor. Personally, I'm not bothered by any of it, yes I'm annoyed when I'm clearly better than someone and I get item screwed at the last second, so what I do is... Play another race. I see no reason to care, it's a game and who needs a perfect win record? If losing a game is that upsetting... Well, I just think who will want to play if they can't ever win a single match? I like that games like these give everyone a chance.

It is the whole design of the game which is ok with 4 people in the same room but it is worthless playing online.

IMO, it's much easier to win tight races online if you stay 2nd or 3rd until the second half of the last track. Collect a good attack or boost in the meantime, fire the ones you don't want backwards. Then time your final attack.
