Why do people keep wanting Duck Hunt to be a collectathon? Is it just because of the Banjo/Kazooie dynamic? Because first of all that feels like a ripoff, but more importantly it feels kind of forced. The original game had nothing to do with collectathon platforming and it doesn't really feel like a natural fit for the genre. I think if they were to modernize the IP it would be better as an open world shooter.
If you ask me, Duck Hunt would be better as a modern hunting game. They could keep the aesthetic and the core idea, but just put the player into a 3D environment.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F
Super Mario Sunshine and DK64 were the pinnacle of collectathons. Nintendo, please make an HD Sunshine remake like you did with Wind Waker!
I definitely wouldn't mind that. Especially if the game told you in which areas you've already collected all the blue coins. Without that flaw and with Wiimote + Nunchuk controls i'd see it as a real classic.

What's the different between that and what I said?
@Saucerful Did you just say...minor problems ?
Like, a physics engine with a mind of its own, making Mario feel like hes constantly buttered up or simply having no friction whatsoever ?
Loveable missions like the forced platforming challenges, that are ridiculously frustrating thanks to said engine ?
Or Stuff like the Sandbird, the entirety of Pianta Village or Corona Mountains non working boats ?

@Octane Well, finichy controlls and "one bump death physics puzzles" arent really my idea of "working properly".
Especially not if youre also trying to get these pesky blue coins, which prolongs the whole process.
Sunshine is a downright broken game on so many levels, which is a shame really, as its unique atmosphere is really nice.
A re-release would need to be reworked pretty extensively though, starting with a working physics engine for basic stuff like not slipping on surfaces that arent 100% flat.
Oh, and the "get thrown around by Piantas" mission was a blast too...
Man, thinking of it, i probably could count the working, fun missions this game has on one hand...

TBH I prefer the more "linear" 3D platformers and I'd argue that's precisely what Super Mario Galaxy was. And that's gotta be one of if not the best game ever made. Thinking about it now, I kinda want to play it again....

Perhaps it's just my experience with the game, as it's one of those games that I could play over and over again. The only level that usually takes me a few tries is the Pachinko level (I have absolutely no idea what physics mechanic is going on there, as it flings you to the right side with light-speed immediately after the bounce panel). I agree that the game is far from perfect, I think I'm just a little biased since I'm quite used to it after so many years.
I don't really care about the term collectathon, I just want the return 3D platformers, preferably full 3D platformers with open worlds and full control of the camera. Though 3D World/Crash Bandicoot style is fine too. Something different from the 2D we've had too much of lately.
You know, I love my Banjo Kazooies and the like but tbh the entire 3D platformer genre needs a revival. I honestly think Lost World is the last 3D platformer we got that really felt like a 3D platformer. Everything else lately has either been not well received or is actually a beat-em-up or a 2D platformer disguised as a 3D platformer. It's kinda weird in the era of open world that some genres like 3D platformer and FPS decided to be far less open.
....I'd say Knack and 3D World are good games....
They're good games, but they kinda lack the exploration elements that made the classic 3D Platformers from the late '90s and Early 2000's so good. Really, I always kinda hoped that after Jak & Daxter and Super Mario Sunshine, the genre would work towards a more connected overworld full of secrets and whatnot, instead of making every level a place you warp to when you find the portal...but I've yet to see any example of that besides the previously mentioned Jak & Daxter all the way back in 2002. :/
Is Knack really a platformer? It looked like a typical action adventure with mostly fighting from one enviroment to the next from all the footage I saw of it.

That was one of the "beat 'em ups in disguise" kkslider was referring to...

Hunting and shooter are different genres.
Hunting is about taking out game for points, rewards, etc. It's all about aim and timing. A shooter is about fighting human enemies that will fight back. A lot of the gameplay is dependent on your ability to avoid getting killed

This is a complete exaggeration, it's very rare that you have the kind of control issues you describe.

Exactly, the exploration made a huge difference in the gameplay and changes the way you use platforming. A linear platformer is more about hitting all of the right notes to get from A to B. But when exploration is thrown into the mix, it's more about figuring out how to use your platforming skills to navigate the environment and explore and if you're creative enough, there's not always one right answer to how to do that because it's an open, interconnected level. It's less "What is the exact sequence I need to do to progress?" and more "How can I get from where I am to where I want to be?".

That sounds more like a subgenre than a completely different genre.

That is what I don't like - rather spend the time playing than stopped trying to work out what to do. (Multiple Paths for e.g S Ranks like Sonic is ok).

Yup. Minor issues. But then again, maybe I was just so used to it for a long time. I don't know. I do remember Mario being quite "slippery" on levels like the Secret of the Merri-go-round in Pinna Park, but those instances seemed so far and few in between. Wasn't particularly fond of the Pachinko level, either. But these things can easily be fixed.
I don't like "figuring out what to do" in the sense that I hate feeling like I'm missing necessary information. That's rarely the case in a lot of platformers, though, so it's more about having the feeling of having options and the freedom to attack a problem in more creative ways.
Also, I think we can all agree that a tuned-up Super Mario Sunshine re-release would be fantastic, yes?
